LETTER FROM THE EDITOR It’s February and love is in the air! Whether you’re in love, been in love or have lost love, this is the time our culture celebrates love! The best part about love as we age is we’ve gained the wisdom to understand love is more than the pounding in our hearts, but rather a commitment to care deeply for others as we seek to help meet their needs. One of my favorite books is The 5 Love Languages by Gary D. Chapman. This book suggests people receive love through: receiving words of affirmation, acts of service or gifts, experiencing quality time, and physical touch. I’d like to encourage you to seek how to love those in your life well— as well as yourself. Also, I want to thank you for supporting our advertisers and business partners this month as you eat out, look at improving your health or repairing your home.

VETERANS POST

by Freddy Groves

It must be a shock to get a letter from the Dept. of Veterans Affairs saying you’re dead—and it’s cutting off your benefits. That scenario happened more than 100 times in the span of nine months. The VA decided a veteran was dead and benefits were cut.

Florida Rep. David Jolly jumped in and asked the VA for an explanation. The VA had none. In one case, it had the veteran dead and buried in the wrong cemetery after having served in the wrong war. In other cases it had to do with similar names. In a few cases, veterans weren’t able to satisfactorily prove they were still alive until Rep. Jolly got involved and pushed for a new process. The new process will include relying on the database for the Social Security Administration rather than a VA employee who can cancel benefits with a keystroke. A letter will also now be sent in advance of benefits being cut off. While the VA puts together an “It won’t happen again” plan, consider that, if a call to the local regional VA facility doesn’t solve the problem, call your U.S. representative or senator. percent of germs, if your sponge smells, you should throw it out.

SIX THINGS IN YOUR KITCHEN TO GET RID OF NOW

Plastic Grocery Bags. If you have more than 10 plastic bags balled up in a cabinet somewhere, move the rest to your car and take them to your nearest WalMart, Target or grocery store that recycles plastic bags.

Save your sanity and toss this stuff immediately!

De-cluttering the kitchen is always on the “someday” list. But we just say no to any more excuses: Take an hour, get rid of the biggest offenders and learn what you can do to keep things from ever getting out of hand again.

Canned Food That Looks Questionable. It goes without saying that anything that’s expired should be tossed, but the USDA recommends that you should also throw out any canned foods that are rusted—and you can’t easily rub off the rust with a paper towel—or have dents big enough that you could stick your finger in them. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Your Insane Plastic Container Collection. This may just be the single biggest cause of cabinet avalanches. Limit yourself to just two sizes of reusable containers. Try to stick to 5 to 6 pieces in each size. That way you’re not fighting to find the right lid for each bowl. Anything That Came for Free with Your Dinner. Spare chopsticks, soy sauce packets—you’re always going to get more the next time you order, so there’s no point in stockpiling them.

Barely Used Cookbooks. If you’ve owned it for over a year and haven’t made a single thing, it’s probably time to consider selling—unless it’s a family heirloom or other treasured item, in which case, move it to your living room bookshelves or repurpose as a coffee table book.

Your Sponge. While the USDA’s research group found that microwaving a damp sponge eliminates 99.9998

A: Ruby glass is a flashed glass that was manufactured by numerous companies in the 1890s through the 1940s. Values are tricky. It might be a good idea to consult the numerous price guides available and monitor prices on eBay. You might want to contact a certified appraiser who specializes in glass. Q: My son has a collection of about 75 vintage comic books. Can you recommend a price guide? A: There are three comic references I consult regularly: Golden Age Comics by Alex G. Malloy and Stuart W. Wells III; Official Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide by Robert W. Overstreet; and Comic Book Checklist and Price Guide by Maggie Thompson, Brent Frankenhoff and Peter Bickford. Since prices can vary from region to region, don’t assume values listed are in stone. Also, don’t hesitate to contact established comic book dealers in your area. WWW.THEGRANDSEASON.COM

TRAVEL BUG

BEATING JETLAG

Don’t let jetlag destroy your upcoming travel plans.

Try some of these tips to cope with long flights. Reduce Your Flight Layovers. Know your schedule before you even get on your flight and don’t break up your journey by transferring planes a few times along the way. Taking a direct flight is typically better in the long run. Exercise the Day Before. The longer you sit the more uncomfortable you get, the more you wish you could get up and exercise. The day before you leave, make sure you wear yourself out at the gym, ensuring your legs get the brunt of the workout. Not only will exercise release chemicals in your body that reduce stress, but a good workout will also tire you out for the flight, meaning you’ll find it easier to take a nap. Reserve a Window Seat. If you like your comfort on a plane, reserve a window seat well in advance. These seats (other than first class) are the only places where you can rest your head on a hard surface (with a pillow, of course). Drink Lots of Fluids. Water (not alcohol) is the key to getting the best from your flight. Spending hours sitting and breathing refurbished air can leave you dehydrated. Your best bet is to take in as much fluid as you can before, during and after your journey.

COUCH THEATER by Sam Struckhoff

Now on DVD/Blu-Ray! The Diary of a Teenage Girl (R) Minnie is a spunky teen who is ecstatic about becoming a woman. She’s had sex with her mother’s boyfriend, and she’s eager to see how the world opens up as she navigates this new side of herself. Her mother isn’t much of a beacon, indulging in the sex and drug offerings of 1970s San Francisco. Minnie dreams of being a comic artist, and records her colorful perspective in ways that take over the screen. Woodlawn (PG) Faith and football face off against racism in this based-ona-true-story film about a high-school team struggling with the end of segregation in Birmingham, Alabama. Coach Tandy Gerelds is at a loss until he and the team receive an intervention from “sports chaplin” Hank Erwin, who beseeches the team to carry on with love, forgiveness and faith in the Lord.

The Grand Season Business Profile

Let Brandt Builders Brighten Your Home Trust a proven leader in providing quality craftsmanship and excellent service to homeowners looking to enhance their homes. Have you moved here to the Valley of the Sun, only to find there’s not enough light inside your home? We have the perfect solution for you. Let Brandt Builders brighten up your house naturally with tubular skylights. An Arizona resident since 1971, Tom Brandt moved to the Valley of the Sun from Iowa and completed his formal education at Arizona State University. In 1987, Brandt Builders was born and has been a family owned business and is licensed, bonded and insured. Residents of the West Valley have trusted the services of Brandt Builders for over 30 years. While they are known for their incredible craftsmanship in updating tired kitchens, many people aren’t aware of the fact that Brandt Builders were one of the first contractors in Arizona to introduce tubular skylights to their clients. Some may say it was a matter of chance, Tom Brandt may say otherwise, but he happened to meet the inventor of the tubular skylight. As a general contractor, Tom knew this new source of lighting would be a perfect match for Arizona homes. Tubular skylights are an energy efficient means to brighten your home naturally and quickly. The installation is usually completed in a couple of hours— depending on your roof type—since no framing or construction is involved. The tubular skylights also have a low “u” factor so the State of Arizona offers a 25 percent tax credit for homeowners who install the lights. Brandt Builders uses Elite Solar Systems’ tubular skylights that are made locally in Chandler (elitesolarsystems.com). Not

28

THE GRAND SEASON - SURPRISE AREA EDITION FEBRUARY 2016

to mention, all skylight materials come with a lifetime warranty. Brandt Builders also installs the Elite Solar Attic Fan. These fans are great at keeping your attic temperatures lower in the warmer months. They cost nothing to operate, and come with a 30 percent federal tax credit. Tom’s son, Michael joined the family business about 10 years ago, and both boast plenty of quality experience. Between the two of them, they have completed over 20,000 tubular skylight installations. With experience like that, you can’t go wrong! If you’re looking for an affordable, energy-efficient way to bring natural light into your home, trust Brandt Builders Inc. With skylight prices starting at just $445 installed, you can’t afford not to call. For pricing or to schedule installation of your tubular skylight call Brandt Builders at (623) 486-0960 today. RED VELVET CUPCAKES

KITCHEN DIVA

A mouth-watering recipe for a treat everyone will love

This Valentine’s Day try this fantastic recipe for Red Velvet Cupcakes! These cupcakes capture the powerful flavor of chocolate, and are perfect for sharing with your neighbors or that special person you love. Ingredients • 1/2 cup butter • 1 1/2 cups white sugar • 2 eggs • 1 cup buttermilk • 1 fluid ounce red food coloring • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda • 1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder • 1 teaspoon salt

Directions 1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease two 12 cup muffin pans or line with 20 paper baking cups. 2. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Mix in the eggs, buttermilk, red food coloring and vanilla. Stir in the baking soda and vinegar. Combine the flour, cocoa powder and salt; stir into the batter just until blended. Spoon the batter into the prepared cups, dividing evenly. 3. Bake in the preheated oven until the tops spring back when lightly pressed, approximiately 20 to 25 minutes. Cool in the pan set over a wire rack. When cool, arrange the cupcakes on a serving platter and frost with whatever delicious frosting you love. (Cream cheese frosting can be the perfect match for red velvet cupcakes.) Get creative with a topping! Try adding red sprinkles or some other red candy or crumble to make these treats look as great as they taste! For more great recipes visit www.allrecipes.com.

SENIOR NEWS

STAY HAPPY, STAY HEALTHY

Negative stereotypes about aging can produce negative outcomes in seniors.

That’s quite a statement, and apparently it’s true. The phrase “Don’t worry, be happy” might well include the addition of “and stay healthier.”

Ad Deco d a rat Fixt u ive re!

Researchers interacted with 100 seniors ages 61-99 to learn whether positive stereotyping could have positive outcomes. They used implicit (implied) and explicit (clearly expressed) messages, in varying combinations, at one-week intervals. The results showed that implicit interventions caused improved self-perception, which included better physical function. The opposite also was true: Negative messages resulted in negative self-perception. The impact lasted for three weeks. And implicit messages had a greater effect than explicit ones.

Before

Becca Levy, associate professor at Yale, has been researching the impact of aging for a long time. In some of her research, participants played computer games with words flashed on the screen. These subliminal messages had an impact, either positive or negative, about aging stereotypes, and affected memory tasks, walking speed and even handwriting. If flash messages could have such a great impact, think about what more overt messages could do.

Before After

After

Researchers have come up with a numbers of ways we can stay healthier as we age, and it’s all about our frame of mind.

A BETTER YOU

STAY HEALTHY AS YOU EMBRACE CHANGE While you can’t stop time, these tips can help you adjust as you age.

Life after 50 is full of periods of both joy and stress. Due to the challenges associated with stress, it’s important to build your resilience and find healthy ways to cope with these changes.

Burying your feelings, however, can lead to anger, resentment and depression. Don’t deny what you’re going through—find healthy ways to process your feelings, perhaps by talking with a close friend or writing in a journal. Accept the things you can’t change. Many things in life are beyond our control. Rather than stressing out over them, focus on the things you can control such as the way you choose to react to problems. Face your limitations with dignity and a healthy dose of humor. Look for the silver lining. As the saying goes, “What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.” When facing major challenges, try to look at them as opportunities for personal growth. If your own poor choices contributed to a stressful situation, reflect on them and learn from your mistakes.

Learning positive coping skills can help you make the most of the good times and keep your perspective when times are tough. Focus on the things you’re grateful for. The longer you live, the more you lose. But as you lose people and things—life becomes even more precious. When you stop taking things for granted, you can appreciate and enjoy what you have even more.

Finally, laughter is strong medicine for both the body and the mind. It helps you stay balanced, energetic, joyful, and healthy at any age.

Acknowledge and express your feelings. You may have a hard time showing emotions, perhaps feeling that such a display is inappropriate and weak.

A sense of humor helps you get through tough times, look outside yourself, laugh at the absurdities of life, and transcend difficulties.

The Grand Season Business Profile

Desert Golf Cars Rolls Out Unsurpassed Quality Providing Dream Cars With a Smile, Handshake and Honest Service

Kirk Forsythe chose the golf car industry to help drive his career toward a new path, turning away from banking and an out-of-Phoenix move. So on April 1, 1971, he opened Desert Golf Cars in Youngtown. This family-owned business continued to grow and be successful, even during some very difficult economic times.

Desert Golf Cars offers new and used golf cars, service, electric and fuel-injected motors, custom design and paint, parts, body-shop repairs, accessories and rentals. “We also give everyone a price list,” says Jon. “Our pricing is standardized for everyone walking in the door. Most golf car dealers do not have price lists, so how do you know what you are getting?”

Today, Desert Golf Cars, Yamaha’s oldest distributorship, is in the capable hands of Forsythe’s sons Rob and Jon, who lead a staff of 58 at six Desert Golf Cars locations Youngtown, Sun City West, Mesa, La Quinta and Palm Desert, Calif.

Desert Golf Cars is a place where the golf car of today comes with unsurpassed service, and customers can order a car of their choosing, not just “a take it as is” product off an assembly line, says Jon. He continues, “Nearly one-third of golf car buyers are not golfers, but rather are purchasing to fit a specific lifestyle.”

The West Valley has changed a lot since the 1970s, yet generational wisdom prevails in day-to-day operations at Desert Golf Cars. “My father’s father was a businessman, and even though he died when my father was very young, my father learned there is only one way to do business. With your word and a handshake,” explains Jon Forsythe. “And I was taught that same way. We develop a relationship with someone first, and sell them a product that fits their needs second.” Apparently, this breath of yesteryear sets a tone of trust, even when it comes to money. “It’s our company policy that we don’t take any money down,” says Jon, who directs the personal car line, while Rob oversees commercial and industrial sales. “If you don’t like what we build, we don’t want you to own it. We never take any money down to build your dream golf car. Pretty simple.”

40

THE GRAND SEASON - SURPRISE AREA EDITION FEBRUARY 2016

Jon says, “The golf cars that we see here are made one-by-one by the dealers. You can customize the Yamaha and Garia models available at Desert Golf Cars to your exact specifications.” He says, “My father believed if you treat people fairly they become family. We have quite a large family that now takes care of us in our community.’” To discuss your golf car wish list with the staff at Desert Golf Cars, check out the showroom at 11212 W. Wisconsin Ave. in Youngtown. Winter hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday for service, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for sales. PUTTS & PARS by Barry Goldstein

4 MORE TRICKS TO BECOME A BETTER PLAYER

Quick and easy tips to play better golf right now.

TRICK 1: Play With the Wind, Not Against It Amateurs often fret about playing in the wind, but better players know how to use wind to their advantage. Experienced players know that no matter what type of shot you’d normally play, whether it’s a draw, fade or whatever, the wind changes everything. You have to make adjustments to make the wind work for you, instead of trying to hit a shot to fight against it. TRICK 2: Play for More Break Ever heard the sayings, “It’s always better to miss it on the pro side of the hole” or “Never up, never in”? Better players know that, no matter how well you judge the speed and break of a putt, if you consistently miss on the low side of the hole, you’re never giving yourself a real chance. Since golf balls don’t roll upwards naturally, unless you hit the putt from below the hole up the hill, the ball has no chance to go in.

TRICK 3: Finish the Shot One of the higher-handicapper’s biggest fears on the course is the sand shot. There are a few fundamentals you ought to follow to get the job done, such as hitting down and behind the ball and letting the sand lift the ball. So many of my students seem to believe that it’s necessary to dig the wedge into the sand to excavate the ball. Instead, try to make a full finish. Swing all the way through to a balanced and comfortable finish position. TRICK 4: Stack Your Chips A great chip can help you make or break par faster than any putt. To become a better chipper, work on stacking your impact position. This means that, at the moment of truth, the left arm, the shaft and your weight should all be stacked over your left leg. This helps you control the shot and hit it crisp and solid. These quick, simple tips can turn your game around. Practice them and the better you get, the simpler your swing and swing thoughts should become. Barry Goldstein teaches at the famed Inverrary Country Club in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

PAW PRINTS by Sam Mazzotta

QUESTION I find it weird that my two dogs, Shep and Bull, can eat just about anything (I have to hide all the pet food), while my cat, Trudy, will turn up her nose at most food. Although she’s perfectly healthy, sometimes she gets sick after eating wet/fresh food. Why? ANSWER Cats’ eating behaviors have long been a source of curiosity for owners and the scientific community. Why do they sometimes throw up after eating? The answer is complicated, and no one is entirely sure. A recent study, found that cats have some genes that are more commonly possessed by herbivores (animals that eat only plants, like cows). This research opens a new avenue into understanding. If cats are detecting a bitter taste in their food then they may be less inclined to eat it. And, the bitter taste may trigger a vomiting response to safeguard against ingesting what is perceived to be poison.

coordination and reducing the risk of falls. Strength training also helps alleviate the symptoms of chronic conditions such as arthritis. Exercise improves your sleep. Poor sleep is not an inevitable consequence of aging and quality sleep is important for your overall health. Exercise often improves sleep, helping you fall asleep more quickly and sleep more deeply. Exercise boosts mood and self-confidence. Exercise is a huge stress reliever and the endorphins produced can help reduce feelings of sadness, depression or anxiety. Being active and feeling strong naturally helps you feel more self-confident. Exercise is amazingly good for the brain. Activities like Sudoku or crossword puzzles can help keep your brain active, but little comes close to the beneficial effects of exercise on the brain. Exercise benefits brain functions as diverse as multitasking and creativity and can help prevent memory loss, cognitive decline and dementia. Exercise may even help slow the progression of brain disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease. Given all the benefits, make this the month you get up and get out—even if it’s just for a walk down the street!

FAMILY FUN

IMPACTING THE NEXT GENERATION

Time with grandchildren can be life-changing if your expectations are clear upfront.

Grandparenting varies from family to family. But no matter what yours looks like, you can keep the relationships positive by establishing some ground rules with your son or daughter.

Baby proof your home to ensure safety for infants and toddlers. It may have been a good while since you had little ones in your home, so check with your grandchild’s parents on ways you can ensure they’re comfortable leaving the child with you in your home. Resist the urge to be the parent. As much as you might want to tell your children how to raise your grandkids, it’s not your role. Respect the parenting decisions your children make for your grandkids. Don’t try to buy your grandkids’ affection. It’s tempting for grandparents to shower their grandkids with gifts, but check with the child’s parents before you buy more toys. Maybe substitute some of your gift giving with activities instead.

Be clear about what role you want to have in your grandchild’s life. For example, how often you want to babysit or do you wish to be included in events such as school functions? Talk with parents about their rules. Consistency is important for kids, so know the behavior limits your grandchild has to follow at home and maintain the rules when he or she is with you. Enforce any agreed upon punishment for bad behavior, whether it’s a “time out” or loss of privileges, for example. Your ability to work with your kids to maintain their discipline is important.

Maintain parental boundaries. A grandparent who won’t enforce limits and gives in to their grandchild’s every whim can infuriate parents. By allowing your grandkids to misbehave or ignore bedtimes, you’re only encouraging unhealthy behavior and making their parents’ job even harder. AUTO TALK

STAY SAFE BEHIND THE WHEEL

Listen to concerns voiced by family and friends.

There are things you can do to continue driving safely, including modifying your car, the way you drive and rectifying issues that may interfere with driving. Take charge of your health. Regular check-ups are critical to keep you in the best possible driving shape. Get your eyes checked every year. Make sure corrective lenses are current. Keep the windshield, mirrors and headlights clean. Have your hearing checked annually. If you use hearing aids, be sure to wear them while driving. Be careful with opening car windows, though, as drafts can sometimes impair a hearing aid’s effectiveness. Talk with a doctor about the effects that ailments or medications may have on your driving. If you have glaucoma, tinted eyeglass lenses may reduce glare.

Sleep well. Getting enough sleep is essential to driving well. If there are problems, try to improve nighttime sleep conditions and talk with your doctor about the effect of any sleep medications on driving. Find the right car and any aids you need for safe driving. Choose a vehicle with automatic transmission, power steering and power brakes. Keep your car in good working condition with regular maintenance. Drive defensively. In the days of cell phones, GPS devices and digital music, drivers are more distracted than ever, so leave adequate space for the car in front of you, pay extra attention at intersections and make sure you’re driving appropriate to the flow of traffic. Know your limitations. If a driving situation makes you uncomfortable, don’t do it. Many older drivers decide to drive only during daylight hours and avoid driving in bad weather. Listen to the concerns of others. If relatives, friends or others talk to you about your driving, it may be time to take a hard, honest look at your current ability. Consider taking a class to refresh your driving skills.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

Don’t give your morning routine short shrift; it may be more important than you think. If your routine seems well...routine, it may be time to put some zest in the everyday steps. Get Fresh: Discover what you need to walk out your door alert. For some, it’s a jolt of caffeine. For others, a morning shower. Still for others, it’s layering scents for your own signature fragrance, starting with your body wash. Change It Up: Your routine should work for you, but that doesn’t mean it can’t change from day to day, based on your mood or the aspect of your personality that feels most empowered that day. Give Yourself Time: Can’t resist the snooze button? You may be doing yourelf a disservice. Feeling rushed in the morning can set the vibe for the entire day and lower your overall productivity. Stay Energized: Fragrance can be powerful and the right scent can recharge and refresh your mood. Experiment to see what works best for you! It may be time to give your routine a makeover. Take time to uncover the personal habits and fragrances that make you look good, feel great and smell phenomenal.
