Learn to prioritize your self care
In its simplest form, loving yourself comes down to consistently carrying out actions that feel aligned with your core beliefs. You are the only one who can take care of you, so create habits in your life to refuel your soul. Try these simple ideas as you start caring for yourself. Move often When you move, you allow the various forms of energy in your body the space to shift around. If you spend all day sitting in front of a computer (or TV), then your creative, emotional, sexual energies tend to get trapped in your body. So instead of sitting in an office chair or couch, get up and move as often as you can. Limit the junk your brain consumes Just like when your body feels grumpy, if you feed it awful things consistently, so too does your mood suffer when you feed your mind garbage. Seek to fill your time with positive entertainment, and delete the continual feed of negativity. Invest in your sleep You spend roughly a third of your life sleeping, so you might as well get good at it. The way you sleep can either deprive you and deplete you, or it can energize and uplift you. Be intentional on how you spend your time Enforce real boundaries in your life, so you can carve out time for the things that matter the most to you. Say “no” to people you don’t like spending time with. Spend time with your favorite people on a regular basis. Carve out time in your calendar to make time for fun, lightness and playfulness. Make time for rest and relaxation Between all of your healthy meals, optimized sleep habits, and playfulness, you want to make sure you’re also allowing yourself the time and space to breathe and relax. Take naps when you feel like it. Rest and relaxation are vital to loving yourself. Spend time alone Whether you’re single, in a relationship, or married, one of the best ways that you can cultivate a loving relationship with yourself is to regularly spend some time alone. Braid an impromptu rope – Roll up three lengths of duct tape and then braid them together to make a surprisingly strong rope. Fix a leaky tent – Put duct tape on the seams. Bind a large wound – Use the tape to pull the skin together on both sides, then seek help. Make a sling – Tape the patient’s wrist, then make a tape strap to run up and around the neck. Build a stretcher – Take two poles and run tape back and forth between them many times taking into account the size of the person. Historically, Americans began celebrating George Washington’s Birthday just months after his death, long before Congress declared it a federal holiday. It was not until 1879, under President Rutherford B. Hayes, that Washington’s Birthday became a legal holiday, to be observed on his birthday, February 22. Washington’s birthday was celebrated on February 22 until well into the 20th Century. In 1968, Congress passed the Monday Holiday Law to “provide uniform annual observances of certain legal public holidays on Mondays.” By creating more 3-day weekends, Congress hoped to “bring substantial benefits to both the spiritual and economic life of the Nation.” In a sense, Washington’s birthday helps us reflect on not just the first president, but also the founding of our nation, the values, and what Washington calls in his Farewell Address, the “beloved Constitution and union, as received from the Founders.”
1. “Alley Oop,” in 1960. The comic strip started in 1932 and in 1995 was honored by a commemorative U.S. postage stamp. 2. “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” by the Beatles. Writer John Fred initially misheard the Beatles song and thought the words were “Lucy in disguise.” 3. BUILDING HEALTHY HABITS Small changes can lead to big results
A new year brings about a desire for change, so let’s start with your health! When it comes to our daily meal routine, change can sometimes be challenging. Studies have shown that it takes from two to eight months to form a new habit. You can create a positive eating “habit” by making small changes over time, like eliminating sugary drinks and high-sodium foods. Consider making healthy changes that reflect your personal preferences, culture and traditions. Think of each change as a “win” as you build good habits and find solutions that reflect your new healthy eating style. Use the tips below, courtesy of My Plate (www. choosemyplate.gov/start-small-changes), to find little victories that work for you! Make half your plate fruits and vegetables Focus on whole fruits more often than drinking 100% juice. Snack on fresh, frozen, canned or dried fruits instead of cookies, brownies or other sugar-sweetened treats. Offer whole fruits without saturated fat, sodium or added sugars as dessert. Vary your veggies to include green, red and orange choices. Add fresh, frozen or canned vegetables to salads, side dishes and recipes. Prepare your vegetables without sauces, gravies or glazes to lower the amount of sodium, saturated fat and added sugars. Make half your grains whole grains Choose whole-grain foods more often than refined grains. Make at least half the amount of grains you eat each day whole grains. Find high fiber, whole-grain foods by reading the Nutrition Facts label and ingredients list. Some common whole grains include oatmeal, wholewheat flour and popcorn. Move to low-fat and fat-free dairy Choose low-fat or fat-free milk and yogurt. Buy low-fat or fat-free cheese more often than regular cheese. Regular cream cheese, butter and cream are not in the dairy food group because they have little or no calcium. They also are high in saturated fat.
