Over the past decade, we have learned how our brains are hardwired for emotional contagion. Emotions spread via a wireless network of mirror neurons, which are tiny parts of the brain that allow us to empathize with others and understand what they’re feeling. Your brain picks up the smiles, yawns and fatigue response of someone sitting on the other side of the room. But it’s not just smiles and yawns that spread. We can pick up negativity, stress, and uncertainty like secondhand smoke. Observing someone who is stressed—especially a family member—can have an immediate effect upon our own nervous systems. Secondhand stress is much more contagious from a romantic partner than a stranger. In such a highly connected world, we need to find ways to improve our emotional immune system, otherwise we risk the negative effects of second-hand stress. Here’s how:
Be Calm and Carry On
We found that if you create a positive mindset about stress and stop fighting it, you experience a 23% drop in the negative effects of stress. When we see stress as a threat, our bodies and minds miss out on the enhancing effects of stress.
Be Confident
One of the greatest buffers against picking up others’ stress is stable and strong self-esteem. The higher your self-esteem, the more likely you will feel that you can deal with whatever situation you face. Exercise is one of the best ways to build selfesteem, because your brain records a victory every time you exercise. And of course, it’s not just other people’s stress that matters — our own mindset affects the happiness of those around us. A positive mindset can improve our own lives, and the lives of everyone around us.

Grandparenting is one of the best perk from being a parent.
As grandparents we all want to make the most of the precious family time we get to spend with our grandchildren. You can create deep, loving relationships with your grandchildren by sharing the things you love and by

What’s so grand about being a grandparent?
In no particular order, grandparenting is an opportunity to play, to love someone new, to appreciate the magic of a developing mind, and to be needed by someone again.
Grandparents can:
• Share the things they’re passionate about with a new audience. • See the world in a new way through younger eyes.
• Experience games, music, nature, reading, and other interests in conjunction with a curious young mind. • Provide expanded support and encouragement to their grandchildren.
• Use their breadth of experience to avoid the pitfalls they may have encountered as parents the first time around. • Watch children develop through all stages of growth. • Learn about their grandkids’ music and passions. • Provide input that parents cannot.
Usually, grandparents have the benefit of interacting on a level that is once removed from the dayto-day responsibilities of parents. This can make it easier to develop a close bond with grandchildren. From near or far, grandparenting can provide continuity in a child’s life. Grandparents are often the family historians, and can add a rich sense of family tradition to a child’s life. Additionally, contact with grandparents can teach children positive attitudes towards aging and help them develop skills to enhance their own lifelong learning.
Of course, not everything about being a grandparent is great all of the time. Becoming a grandparent at a young age can make some people feel prematurely old and, just as parents do—grandparents sometimes have to deal with colicky babies and moody teenagers. For most though, the benefits of being a grandparent far outweigh the drawbacks.

If we want to improve our habits, where should we begin? These five habits will protect us from getting so physically taxed or mentally frazzled that we can’t manage ourselves.
Get at least seven hours of sleep.
For many of us, those last hours of the day are time to play or relax, but the fact is, we need sleep. Lack of sleep affects mood, memory, immune function—it even contributes to weight gain. Most adults need at least seven hours of sleep a night. If you struggle with getting to bed on time, try setting an alarm at night to help you get moving toward sleep.
Go for a 20-minute walk.

energizes and calms us. You don’t need to train for a marathon or go to an hour-long spin class. The biggest health boost goes to those who are consistent about being less sedentary.

Make your bed. Also, if you can do something in less than one minute, do it without delay. This eliminates the scrim of clutter on the surface of life.
Give yourself healthy treats.
Treats are delightful. Unlike a reward, which must be earned or justified, a “treat” is a small pleasure or indulgence that we give to ourselves just because we want it. We don’t have to be “good” to get it, we don’t earn it or justify it. Giving ourselves “treats” may sound self-indulgent or frivolous, but it’s not. When we give ourselves treats, we feel energized, cared for and contented, which boosts our self-command. It’s a secret of Adulthood: If we give more to ourselves, we can ask more from ourselves. DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350°. Halve biscuits and flatten each one out, then roll into a ball and place in an oven-proof skillet seam side down. Arrange in a ring around the skillet. Brush biscuits with olive oil and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon Parmesan. In a large bowl, combine mozzarella, ricotta, spinach, Parmesan, mayonnaise, garlic powder, and salt and mix until combined. INGREDIENTS Chocolate syrup, for glass 4 oz. vodka 2 oz. Kahlua 2 oz. Baileys 1/4 c. heavy cream Ice Chocolate shavings, for garnish DIRECTIONS Add chocolate syrup to inside of two cocktail glass. Add vodka, Kahlua, Baileys, and heavy cream to a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice and shake until well chilled. Strain into glasses and garnish with chocolate shavings.
Boozy S’mores Milkshake
INGREDIENTS 8 large scoops (about 2 1/2 c.) chocolate ice cream 1/4 c. Baileys 2 oz. vanilla vodka 1/2 c. marshmallow fluff Crushed graham crackers, for rimming Marshmallow bits, for rimming Chocolate fudge, for rimming Whipped cream, for garnish Chocolate squares, for garnish Graham cracker squares, for garnish DIRECTIONS In a blender, blend together ice cream, Baileys, vanilla vodka, and marshmallow fluff. Combine crushed graham crackers and marshmallow bits on a small plate. Rim 2 glasses with chocolate fudge and dip into graham crackers and marshmallows. Pour milkshake into glasses and top each shake with whipped cream, a chocolate square, and a graham cracker square.

INGREDIENTS 4 c. apple juice 4 c. apple cider 3/4 c. granulated sugar 1/4 c. packed brown sugar 2 cinnamon sticks 1/2 tsp. ground ginger 1/2 tsp. allspice 3/4 c. 190 proof grain alcohol 3/4 c. vodka DIRECTIONS In a large pot over medium-high heat, combine apple juice, cider, sugars, cinnamon sticks, and spices. Bring to a simmer, then cover pot with lid and reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer for 1 hour then remove from heat and let cool. Remove cinnamon sticks and stir in grain alcohol and vodka. Transfer to jars or bottles. Shake well before serving.

INGREDIENTS 5 1/2 c. Rumchata 1/2 c. Fireball 1/4 c. vanilla icing, for rim 1/2 c. crushed Cinnamon Toast Crunch, plus more for garnish Whipped cream, for garnish DIRECTIONS In a large glass, combine Rumchata and Fireball. Stir to combine and set aside. Using a butter knife, spread icing onto rim of each glass. Press cereal crumbs onto all edges of the glass. Add ice to glass, then pour Rumchata mixture over ice. Top with whipped cream and garnish with more cereal. Serve.
