Beat the Heat

Happy Birthday America!

Now that we are immersed in the heat of summer, I hope you are staying hydrated and healthy as you endure the high temperatures. I’m sure I don’t need to remind you to avoid errands and exercise in the middle of the day.

While I know the heat can be suffocating, I hope you and your family can still enjoy time together, whether it’s cooling off at a movie, splashing in the pool, or heading to a cooler climate for a few days.

If you’re looking to escape the heat, I highly recommend staying at The Sheridan House Inn in Williams. You can find out more about this charming property by calling 928-635-8991 or by visiting www. sheridanhouseinn.com.

Thank you for your support of The Grand Season, and the businesses that make our publication possible each month.

I hope you have a fantastic July!

SIMPLY ENJOY

Lighten up, just enjoy life, smile more, laugh more, and don’t get so worked up about things. Kenneth Branagh

Life is like a roller coaster, live it, be happy, enjoy life. Avril Lavigne

Simply enjoy life and the great pleasures that come with it. Karolina Kurkova

Slow down and enjoy life. It’s not only the scenery you miss by going too fast - you also miss the sense of where you are going and why. Eddie Cantor

Do what you need to do and enjoy life as it happens. John Scalzi

You have to enjoy life. Always be surrounded by people that you like, people who have a nice conversation. There are so many positive things to think about. Sophia Loren

It is requisite for the relaxation of the mind that we make use, from time to time, of playful deeds and jokes. Thomas Aquinas

Don’t make things too complicated. Try to relax, enjoy every moment, get used to everything. Angelique Kerber

Your mind will answer most questions if you learn to relax and wait for the answer. William S. Burroughs

If you want to relax, watch the clouds pass by if you’re laying on the grass, or sit in front of the creek; just doing nothing and having those still moments is what really rejuvenates the body. Miranda Kerr

HOLLYWOOD HAPPENINGS

Fifty-five-year-old Hugh Jackman put his Broadway musical training to good use when making “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

“When I came back to it, it was really fun, and I was thrilled,” Jackman confessed. “My body was still responding, and I realized how good it was for your brain. The hardest bit ... [was] the food! ... For me, for my body type, I’m naturally skinny. To get the size on, that’s the hardest bit.” Ryan Reynolds said of Jackman, “Just the sheer relentlessness that [he] dedicated [himself] toward stunts, choreography. It was the first time I’d ever seen how invaluable a background in song and dance is when you are doing an action movie!”

Another actor eating his way to stardom is Chris Hemsworth, who bounced from the animated Paramount/Hasbro film “Transformers One” (due Sept. 20) to the upcoming “Transformers/G.I. Joe” crossover movie. Why keep making “Transformer” films? Maybe the $439 million grosses for “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” last summer explain it.

LOVE INVEST WISELY

The best thing about being in a long-term committed relationship is that you can be yourself. The person you’re with loves you for who you are, which leads to stability and comfort. The only problem with comfort is it’s easy to stop intentionally investing in your relationship—which can lead to unintentional distance. Take a few moments to invest in your relationship daily. Try some of these tips to get started.

Give your partner a foot or back rub that doesn’t lead to sex.

About that warm, affectionate touching thing: enough with the back rubs with ulterior motives already! This kind of pattern means that people begin to associate warm touch with pressure and anxiety, rather than kindness or affection. Find opportunities to squeeze, hug, rub, nuzzle, cuddle or hold your partner throughout the day in a non-sexual way.

Split the housework.

According to a recent study, 62% of couples say that sharing the chores is “very important” for a happy relationship. The only two other factors that ranked as more important than sharing chores were faithfulness and having a happy sexual relationship. Sharing chores ranked higher in importance than sharing

religious beliefs, sharing political beliefs, and making enough money.

Get pumped about your partner’s accomplishments.

While it’s important to be there when hard things happen, it’s also important to celebrate with them when things are going great. Researchers found when you respond happily and enthusiastically to your partner’s good news, that’s a good predictor for future relationship commitment, satisfaction and love.

Give your partner the benefit of the doubt. Experts recommend we put ourselves in our partner’s shoes to try to determine why they might have acted the way they did (instead of assuming the worst), as you might be prone to do.

Schedule actual couple time.

Many couples in therapy report that they never really connect with each other anymore—they’re just always so busy with other things. It’s easy to get into autopilot and start living totally parallel lives. If that thought terrifies you, be adamant about making regular time for one another, even if it’s just 15 minutes a day.

CHILL OUT REDUCE THE HEAT

Feeling a little hot under the collar lately? You’re not the only one! Summer in Arizona is guaranteed to be sweltering hot. Even though we know what to expect, try some of these great ideas when you can’t take the heat anymore.

Ice-cold drinks!

Place bottles in a container big enough to hold a number of bottles and enough ice to surround it with little room to spare. Pack ice and a cup or two of salt (rock or table salt) around the bottles and then fill the container with water. Salt triggers a chemical reaction that lowers the temperature of the water so drinks chill in 10-15 minutes.

Refresh sticky sheets

On those unbearably hot nights place your pillow case and top sheet in the freezer for a few minutes before bedtime. You can also fill a water bottle with water and freeze it. Place it at the foot of the bed to cool your sleeping area down by several degrees instantly.

Make a cooling body spray

If you are spending an extended period of time outdoors in the summer heat be sure to carry along

some liquid coolant! Carry a metal spray bottle with 1 part aloe vera gel to 3 parts cool water to cool everyone down when the temperatures soar. Aloe cools skin by 5 degrees on contact, plus penetrates the skin deeper than water to prolong the cooling sensation.

Reduce your body temperature

Blood runs close to the surface of the skin in your wrists, so running cold water on them is very effective – as the cool blood will then travel around your body! This is a great way to cool down if you’re at a wedding, or an event where you don’t have much time to spare.

Make an “Ice Box Fan”

This stay-cool trick is straight out of the icebox era! Make a DIY air conditioner by positioning a shallow pan or bowl full of ice in front of a fan. The breeze will pick up cold water from the ice’s surface as it melts, creating a cooling mist.

DIY Cooling Pad

For a cold compress on really hot nights, fill a sock with rice, tie it off, and stick it in the freezer for an hour or so. The compress will stay chilly for up to 30 minutes, definitely enough time to nod off.

YOU MAKE IT STICK

Have you ever wondered what makes us emotionally committed?

Commitment is the emotional backbone that gives us strength, determination and focus and that deeply connects to our feelings of happiness and well-being.

It is nearly impossible to talk about commitment without talking about engagement. Engagement is the act that demonstrates commitment. For example, you cannot just buy a plant and announce your commitment to take care of it. The true proof is in the actions you take after you have brought it home. You will need to provide it with sunshine and water, prune its leaves and regularly tend to it.

Life works the same way. Countless people say they want to lose weight or be a better friend, but

they are not actively engaged in demonstrating their commitments.

Here are five ways to enhance your engagement skills:

1. Make conscious commitments and have a plan to back them up

Announce your action, such as, “I am committed to spending more time exercising,” or “I am committed to helping others more than I have in the past.”

2. Team up

Surround yourself with others who are actively engaged in what’s important to them. Team up with a friend, family member or spouse. It is easier to be committed when you are working toward something together that you all care about.

3. Let your actions do the talking

Your actions, language and body language all reflect your engagement. Follow through on your conscious commitments.

4. Balance expectations

Make a schedule to invest the necessary time and energy to be engaged in what’s important in your life. Balance your abilities to meet others’ expectations as well as your own.

5. Regularly evaluate your commitments

Do you have too many or not the right ones? It can be difficult to maintain momentum if you are unhappy or if you feel that what you are investing in is not accomplishing the desired results.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ

A Message from Sue Royer

“I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren.

Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.”
