LOVE CELEBRATE TOGETHER

Marriage is an incredible journey filled with many ups and downs. While it’s often easy to become overwhelmed by the hardships your relationship has endured, research shows that spending time celebrating your relationship leads to higher marital satisfaction, especially when you encounter difficult situations. Need help celebrating your love? Try some of these ideas:

Spend meaningful time together:

• Put on “your song” and dance in the living room. • Give each other massages. • Gaze into each others’ eyes for 2 minutes…5 minutes…and notice what happens. • Hold hands. • Visit the place you met. • Visit where you were married. • Change up the bedroom routine. • Have a picnic at the park. • Get takeout and have a picnic at home by candlelight. • Renew your vows (even in the privacy of your own home). • Take a shower or bath together. • Look at each other’s childhood photos or yearbooks and share stories about the past. • Meet at a bar or restaurant as if it’s your first date. • Unplug for the night – no screen time allowed. • Attend church together.

Go on adventures:

• Plan and go on your dream vacation. • Go on a hike and talk about your dreams for the future. • Take a road trip to your favorite place. • Go wine tasting, beer tasting or on a food tour. • Book a hotel in your own town, for a night away. • Go camping together.

Share hobbies and activities:

• Cook with each other. • Ask questions and show interest in each others favorite hobby. • Take a walk, jog or run together. • Meditate together. • Read a book together and discuss the characters or what you learned. • Take a class together (painting, beermaking, photographer, coding—an interest you can share) • Garden together.

Do something for your partner

• Write your spouse a love letter. • Plant their favorite flower and enjoy the blooms throughout the year. • Make their favorite meal. • Make them a playlist of songs that remind you of them. • Clean out their car. • Bring them coffee and/or breakfast in bed. • Leave a message in the steam on the mirror while they are showering. • Pick up their favorite treat when you are grocery shopping. • Give them a hand-made card or gift. • Frame a special photo or memento for their side of the bed. • Draw them a bubble bath complete with candles, wine and soothing music. • Make their favorite dessert on their birthday.

VETERANS POST

In the latest Medicare Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems patient survey, the Department of Veterans Affairs outperformed community hospitals in 10 of 11 different categories.

The report said that 54% of VA hospitals earned four or five stars, while only 35% of community hospitals did. That’s a hefty increase; just a few years ago, only 26% of VA hospitals rated four or five stars.

The categories included cleanliness of the hospital, care transition, communication with nurses, discharge information and more.

The VA questionnaire, called the Survey of Healthcare Experience of Patients, is based on Medicare’s Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems surveys.

Results for all hospitals can be found at Medicare.gov and are updated quarterly.

The latest release of the data, however, includes results from July 2020 through March 2021.

HERE’S A TIP

Here’s a recipe for a quickie bird feeder or bath: Flip over a nicesize flower pot, and place the pot’s tray on the top. Fill with seed or water.

A great idea for mini ice packs: Freeze ketchup packets you get from takeout food. They are great for icing small bumps or bug bites.

Need a quick measure? A dollar bill (or other U.S. paper currency) is exactly 6 inches long.

HOLLYWOOD HAPPENINGS

Original “West Side Story” Oscar winner Rita Moreno recently voiced she felt Natalie Wood should not have been cast as Maria, adding, “I hate that, again, Maria isn’t being represented by a Puerto Rican actress.” Natalie Wood was cast for four big reasons: 1) She was a huge star, and they raised a lot of money on her name; 2) Maria was very similar to Wood’s role in “Rebel Without a Cause,” opposite James Dean; 3) She was a smash opposite Warren Beatty in “Splendor in the Grass”; and 4) The original film made six times its cost (while the 2021 version is still $25 million short of its cost).

In the new film version, Moreno plays Valentina, the widow of an older Jewish man who runs the candy store Tony lives under, and the Jets, who’ve demonstrated their hatred for Puerto Ricans, hang out in her store. We’d say that’s more of a liberty than a white girl playing Maria!

IMPACT

MORE THAN A MEMORY

Are you thinking of ways you can impact your family or community as your time is winding down? Use these ideas to brainstorm ways to leave your fingerprint on future generations.

1.Write a book. 2.Leave money for your descendants that serves as a foundation on which they can build their financial futures. 3.Bequeath money to charities that are near and dear to your heart. 4.Write down family recipes and family traditions. 5.Serve as a good role model. 6.Pass down a heirloom. 7.Be a mentor. 8.Volunteer. 9.Write your memoir. You can also record video messages for your loved ones, create a scrapbook for them, or create a web site dedicated to your legacy. 10.Endow a scholarship to your alma mater for future students. 11.Write a legacy letter — write down everything you’d want to tell your loved ones if you knew you didn’t have long to live. Be sure to capture the essence of who you are by writing about your life lessons, values, accomplishments and hopes. Think of it as an emotional heirloom. 12.Pass down handmade items, such as quilts, cedar hope chests, or wooden crafts. 13.Start a new program in your community, such as starting a recycling program; planting a community garden; or constructing a playground. 14.Pass down skills and know-how. 15.Right a wrong.
