You may believe you listen to other people when they’re talking—but do you really? Are you engaged in the conversation, or are you multitasking as you scroll through Facebook? Do you allow yourself to digest what they’re saying, or are you mentally preparing your response? Being a good listener is a skill that requires practice. Do you want to be a better listener? Start by working on these tips:
Ask open-ended questions
If you’ve ever tried to chat with someone who gave you one-word answers, you understand the frustration of not being able to keep a conversation going. Part of learning how to listen is using what you hear to then explore new ways of asking the same questions. When trying to navigate a problem—from a missed teetime to a sink full of dirty dishes—asking open-ended questions can help someone feel heard.
Focus on compassion
When you seek to listen, make a conscious effort to be empathetic toward another person. Maybe it’s understanding why your partner feels neglected at work and is taking it out on you. Whatever the case, it’s essential to consider every conversation to be an act of compassion.
Make time for 1:1 conversations
While some people thrive in group situations, others turn into wallflowers who pull away. As a manager at work, or the ringleader of your household, scheduling 1:1 time with each colleague or family member will improve your listening abilities. This dedicated ‘meeting’ is a time where you can understand how each individual communicates.
Give your undivided attention.
When someone is talking to you, it’s time to clear the decks. This means, you’re only listening to them—either looking at them or zeroing in on their voice while chatting on the phone. Maybe you need to step away from your computer, put down your phone or turn off the TV. In short, you need to be fully present, so you can digest what they’re saying.

DIRECTIONS Make cake: Preheat oven to 350º, and grease and flour a 9”-x-13” cake pan. Prepare yellow cake mix according to the box instructions. Pour batter into prepared pan and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 25 minutes. Let cool 10 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare pudding: In a small bowl, whisk together pudding packets and milk until thick. In another large bowl, beat cream, sugar, and vanilla until stiff peaks form. Using the handle tip of a wooden spoon, poke holes all over the cake. Spread pudding mixture on top, and add with a layer of banana slices over pudding. Spread whipped cream on top and sprinkle all over with crushed and whole Nilla Wafers and more banana slices.

Pink lemonade 1/4 c. fresh lemon juice 1/2 c. triple sec 1 c. tequila 4 Lemon Slices, for garnish Lemon wedge, for rimming glasses Coarse salt, for rimming glasses DIRECTIONS Rub a lemon wedge around the rim of four glasses, then dip rims into salt. In each glass, add ice, pink lemonade, lemon juice, triple sec, and tequila. Stir to combine. (if you prefer a lot of ice, stir together mixture first, then pour over ice.) Garnish each glass with a lemon slice.
Grapefruit Margaritas INGREDIENTS 1 c. grapefruit juice 1/2 c. freshly squeezed lime juice 2/3 c. triple sec 3 c. ice 1 c. white tequila 1/4 c. honey Lime wedges, for garnish kosher salt, for garnish DIRECTIONS Run a lime wedge around the rim of each glass then dip each glass in salt. Combine the ingredients in a blender. Blend on high until smooth and slushy. Pour into glasses and garnish with more lime.

Safety • Carbon monoxide, often referred to as the “silent killer,” is odorless, colorless and tasteless. Protect your family by changing the batteries on your carbon monoxide detectors and ensuring you have a detector on each level of your home.
DIRECTIONS Combine all ingredients in a blender and pulse until thoroughly mixed. Serve in margarita glasses rimmed with salt (dip rim in water or lime juice, then dip the rim in a shallow plate covered in salt). Garnish with a lime slice or fresh strawberry. TIP 1 Use lip balm to help a tight ring slide more easily off of a finger. TIP 2 If you have some sticky gum that’s stuck on fabric, it might be best to set it aside and wait for it to harden. Or, if you can’t wait that long, try using a piece of duct tape. Press the tape over the gum, then lift off from the side. You can repeat this process to pull up all of the gum. TIP 3 If you’re reattaching a button to shorts or pants, try using dental floss, the unwaxed kind. It’s much stronger, and can hold the button better than regular thread. Use a marker to darken it if the color is an issue. TIP 4 Store brooms either handle down or on a hook that allows the bristles to suspend over the floor. When brooms rest their bristles on the floor, it bends them and breaks the ends. Broken ends make it hard for the broom to work efficiently. SPEAK EASY
Even the happiest couples need help communicating. When life gets busy and you feel stressed, you often lose sight of the person that you are married to. Though you love each other, sometimes you forget to talk. You may be mentally drained or just need some alone time, and it’s so easy to take each other for granted in those moments.
1. Respect one another.
Talking to each other shouldn’t be a chore. It can be fun, it can be enjoyable, and you can get back to a time where the conversation was easy and seamless. Here are some communication tips that can help you connect again.
One of the most helpful tips is to tell each other you love one another more often. Take the time to look your spouse in the eyes and say, “I love you.”
This sounds like it should be a given, but far too many of us lose respect for one another along the way. It may be due to a significant reason, or just because you take each other for granted. If you can make each other’s needs a priority, communication will be easier when you prioritize one another.
2. Send a love note.
How much does it make you smile when you get a love note from your spouse? Even if it’s been awhile, send a text to say you’re thinking about them. Leave them a love note in the morning out of nowhere, and for no particular reason at all.
3. Say “I love you” every day.
4. Talk about things that make you both happy.
If you love talking about current events or political views, then do it. If it makes you both happy to talk about your jobs or the industry or the stock market, then go for it. There is no right or wrong here, just find some sort of common ground to ignite the conversations.
