Making gratitude a habit can have positive benefits to your own happiness, as well as those around you, by creating stronger bonds in your relationships. Before you eat, start at one end of the table and encourage every person to share something they are thankful for in their lives. Focus on what you have Write down three positive things you are grateful for every night before you go to bed. Research shows that gratitude journaling can put you in a dramatically better mood and even prolong that feeling for weeks and months the more you practice. To beat the negativity bias, gratitude opens up your brain to attract positivity like bees to honey. The write stuff Think of someone in your life who has made a significant positive impact and write a letter expressing how much that person means to you. If possible, meet this person face-to-face and read the letter aloud. Notice the person’s reaction and savor those moments to recall in the future. Teachable moments Try a new experience with the family and look for teachable moments, such as volunteering at a food bank or handing out gifts at a children’s hospital. Sometimes, the best way to appreciate all of the good in our own world is to take a moment to bear witness to the situations of those who are suffering. Gratitude in the face of adversity can help us weather the storms, provide a greater perspective to the plight of others and strengthen social bonds.

TURKEY TIPS Some parts might cook faster than others. Those pop-up timers aren’t always reliable because they measure the temperature in only one spot. No bird should be served until all parts have been cooked to a safe 165° F. Use an instant-read thermometer in the inner thigh, wing, and thickest part of the breast. The secret to tasty turkey is to cut it up. It’s called spatchcocking: Cut out the backbone, split the bird in half, and lay it flat on a rack. When cooked at 450° F in the oven, a 12-pounder will be ready in about an hour. Since everything cooks evenly in one layer, it’s cooked to juicy perfection. White and dark meat are different muscles. The darker the meat, the more myoglobin, a protein that ships oxygen to the muscles.

Whenever garage sale season falls in your area, you want to be on top of that yard sale checklist so you can accomplish the two goals of any good garage sale: to get rid of unneeded possessions and to earn a little money. They leave behind less lint than paper towels and can be used with both a misting of water or glass cleaner. TIP 4 If you like to saute with butter, be sure to add a bit of oil to the pan as well. Beating the bug before it hits
With flu season just around the corner, there’s a new wrinkle to staying healthy this winter. Our old standby, the antiseptic hand sanitizer, has been found to not work as well as we believed, especially with the influenza A strain. It’s all in how we use it, according to a recent study. First, choose a hand sanitizer that is at least 60 percent alcohol. Be sure to cover your whole hands, including nails. If you come in contact with wet mucus (from a sneeze or cough), it takes the sanitizer a full four minutes to kill the flu virus. (How many of us use sanitizer for four minutes? Not many.) Dry mucus (for example, on a shopping cart handle) takes less time. Hand washing, however, takes only 30 seconds to kill the flu virus and is thought to be more effective than using sanitizer.
Here are some ideas for flu season: • Does your grocery store deliver to your home or the parking lot? This will reduce your exposure. • Take some antiseptic wipes in a plastic baggie when you go out. Use them on the cart handles in stores. Carry a small refillable bottle of hand sanitizer. • Wash your hands thoroughly when you get home. • Once a week (or more often) wrap hand wipes around door knobs at home and let them dry overnight. The biggest step you can take is to get a flu shot. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests the high-dose flu vaccine for seniors because it creates a stronger immune response, 24 percent higher than the standard vaccine. There’s also an adjuvanted and a recombinant vaccine (not made with eggs). Ask your doctor which you should get. Remember that it takes a few weeks for the vaccine to take effect.

If you’re a veteran and are a victim of domestic violence, the Department of Veterans Affairs can help you with housing and support services if you need to flee. If you have children, this includes them. If you are a senior veteran, elder abuse is included in the definition of domestic violence. The housing and services are provided by two programs, Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) and Grant and Per Diem. In 2017, public law 114315 expanded eligibility for both programs to include situations such as fleeing dating violence, domestic violence, stalking and any situation that makes it unsafe for you to stay. If you have to get out immediately, you’re eligible for SSVF rapid housing intervention. Go online to www. va.gov/homeless/gpd. asp and www.va.gov/ homeless/ssvf/ to gather information and make contacts. Stuber (R) How far would you go for a five-star rating? Stu (Kumail Nanjani) — an Uber driver, hence the “Stuber” — picks up a fare in the form of physically intimidating but visually impaired cop Vic (Dave Bautista). He’s running down a killer, but can’t drive so he blackmails Stu into being his wingman using that coveted driver rating. Stu is apprehensive and uptight, Vic is brash and insensitive, and the results are hilarious. Director Michael Dowse’s idea of humor is a two-by-four to the face, so expect limits to be pushed. The Art of Self-Defense (R) Another quirky comedy notch in Jesse Eisenberg’s belt, this film centers around an aggressively macho karate dojo to which extreme beta male Casey (Eisenberg) turns after being bullied and brutally beaten in the streets. At the dojo, Casey’s confidence increases, and he steps up to attend the rawer, more violent night classes where he is enveloped in a downward spiral of belligerence and mayhem alongside other students, including Imogene Poots as the lone female fighter, Anna.

Why is Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November? President Abe Lincoln said Thanksgiving would be the fourth Thursday in November, but in 1939 President Roosevelt moved it up a week hoping it would help the shopping season during the Depression era. It never caught on and it was changed back two years later. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade began in 1924 with 400 employees marching from Convent Ave to 145th street in New York City. No large balloons were at this parade, as it featured only live animals from Central Park Zoo. Why do we get food comas after eating Turkey? Scientists say that extra glass of wine, the high-calorie meal or relaxing after a busy work schedule is what makes you drowsy—not Turkey! Thanksgiving is the reason for TV dinners! In 1953, Swanson had so much extra turkey (260 tons) that a salesman told them they should package it onto aluminum trays with other sides like sweet potatoes—and the first TV dinner was born!
