Jesse Ramirez, a native Arizonan, is passionate about feeding people in need. Not long after he started the Valley View Community Food Bank, Jesse and his team were feeding 300 people daily in 2007. Today, they are feeding over 540 daily. About 48% of his clients are senior citizens over 55, and 32% are either children or adults in their 20’s.

Each day, the food bank distributes 6,000 pounds of food. You may ask, where does the food come from? Jesse say’s, “Most of the food is donated from private food drives, churches, Sam’s Club, local scouting groups, private donations, businesses and organizations.”

The main purpose of the Valley View Community Food Bank is to supply people in the community with wholesome food. Jesse says, “When you combine what people have gone through with COVID, unemployment, and higher food costs, the number of families needing assistance continues to grow. The search for a new James Bond begins in 2022, says producer Barbara Broccoli, who admitted, “We want Daniel Craig to have his time of celebration after his fifth and final James Bond film, ‘No Time to Die.’” Craig didn’t wait around to bask in the spotlight, however; he’s moved on. His character detective Benoit Blanc has been retained for “Knives Out 2,” with a supporting cast that includes Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Katherine Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr. and Kate Hudson. The stand-alone sequel was to be from Lionsgate, but Netflix made a $469 million deal at auction in March, outbidding Amazon and Apple, and promising them two sequels. Daniel Craig needn’t have worried, though, his $1 million salary was guaranteed.

2. Remember the bad. To be grateful in your current state, it is helpful to remember the hard times that you once experienced. When you remember how difficult life used to be and how far you have come, you set up an explicit contrast in your mind, and this contrast is fertile ground for gratefulness. 3. Ask yourself three questions. Think about

your relationships with friends, siblings, children, and partners using these three questions: “What have I received from __?”, “What have I given to __?”, and “What troubles and difficulty have I caused?”

4. Share your gratitude with others. Research has found

that expressing gratitude can strengthen relationships. So

the next time your partner, friend or family member does something you appreciate, make sure to tell them.

5. Use visual reminders.

Two primary obstacles to gratefulness are forgetfulness and a lack of awareness. Visual reminders can serve as cues to trigger thoughts of gratitude. Often times, the best visual reminders are other people.

6. Vow to practice gratitude.

Research shows that making an oath to perform a behavior increases the likelihood that the action will be executed. Therefore, write your own gratitude vow, which could be as simple as “I vow to count my blessings each day,” and post it somewhere where you will be reminded of it every day.

7. Go through the motions.

There’s no wrong way to keep a gratitude journal, but here are some general ideas as you get started. Write down up to five things for which you feel grateful. The physical record is important—don’t just do this exercise in your head. The goal of the exercise is to remember a good event, experience, person, or thing in your life—then enjoy the good emotions that come with it. As you write, here some helpful tips:

1. Be as specific as possible—specificity is key to fostering gratitude. “I’m

grateful that my neighbors brought me soup when I was sick,” will be more effective than “I’m grateful for my neighbors.”

2. Go for depth over breadth. Elaborating in detail about a particular person

or thing for which you’re grateful carries more benefits than a superficial list of many things.

3. Get personal. Focusing on people to whom you are grateful has more of an

impact than focusing on things for which you are grateful.

4. Try subtraction, not just addition. Consider what your life would be like

without certain people or things, rather than just tallying up all the good stuff. Be grateful for the negative outcomes you avoided, escaped, prevented, or turned into something positive—try not to take that good fortune for granted.

5. See good things as “gifts.” Thinking of the good things in your life as gifts

guards against taking them for granted. Try to relish and savor the gifts you’ve received.

6. Savor surprises. Try to record events that were unexpected or surprising, as these tend to elicit stronger levels of gratitude.

7. Write regularly. Whether you write every other day or once a week, commit to a regular time to journal, then honor that commitment.

8. Don’t overdo it. Evidence suggests writing occasionally (1-3 times per

week) is more beneficial than daily journaling. That might be because we adapt to positive events and can soon become numb to them—that’s why it helps to savor surprises.
