SEASONS OF CHANGE

Just like nature, marriage changes like the seasons of the year—spring, summer, autumn, and winter. A strong and happy marriage is one that thrives through each season. Every couple may experience each season, but not in the same order. The one constant in marriage is change.

Spring

Spring brings warmth, optimism, and excitement. Couples begin this phase with matrimony. Both individuals become invariably dependent on each other, believing that their spouse can fulfill their dreams and expectations.

Summer is the season of love and fun, usually accompanied by the birth of children. Unfortunately, partners usually tend to drift in this season due to the lack of intimate communication, resulting from the demands of rearing children.

When couples make it through this season of marriage, they usually realize—once their kids are launched—their focus should have been on growing their relationship. As partners begin to focus on their marriage, they are able to rekindle the love that brought them together.

Autumn is a season of transition. Couples watch their children get married and become parents. At this point, older couples tend to find joy and happiness through their grandchildren. Additionally, during this season, couples usually begin to consider how they want their life to proceed—some may want to retire and enjoy life, while others may want to combine work and rest.

Winter is the final season of marriage, usually marked by illness and eventual death of a partner. Some couples have to deal with the sudden twists of fate, while others have the blessing to reflect on all the important moments in their life and realize how they helped each other transform and grow. These couples spend each moment by trying to enjoy the time they have left, and work to make each day count.

Couples constantly transition from one ‘season’ to another, and while changes may not present themselves annually—you shouldn’t worry if you’ve been stuck in a season for too long. The thing to remember is, the key to a happy marriage is to approach every season with a positive and loving attitude.

Apple Cider Spritz

Ingredients

3 oz. apple cider

1 oz. Aperol

Large pinch of pumpkin spice mix or ground cinnamon

Ice

Apple slices and a cinnamon stick, for garnish

3 oz. Prosecco, cava, or sparkling wine

Directions

In a large wine glass, combine apple cider, Aperol, and pumpkin spice. Stir to distribute spice. Fill glass with ice and add garnish with apple and cinnamon. Top off with Prosecco and enjoy!

Black Magic Margaritas

Ingredients

2 tbsp. black sanding sugar

2 c. ice

4 oz. silver tequila

2 oz. triple sec

1/2 c. lime juice

Red food coloring

Blue food coloring

Green food coloring

Lime slices, for garnish

Directions

Rim two glasses with a lime slice and dip in black sanding sugar. Divide tequila, triple sec, and lime juice between two glasses and stir to combine. Add food coloring until desired black color is achieved. Add ice and garnish with a slice of lime before serving.

ONE STEP AT A TIME

Life is ever changing. When faced with life’s inevitable ups and downs, having the resiliency to stand up to and meet new challenges is imperative. It certainly isn’t always easy, but professional life coaches suggest weathering change is always possible if you keep a few tips in mind.

1. Recognize that change is happening

It is common for people to ignore the change is happening around them for various reasons. Denying or delaying your reaction, however, can often be more stressful than accepting the change early on. Remind yourself that things will be okay, and you’ve endured change before and been fine on the other side.

2.

Write down the positive

Not all change is bad even it seems so at the time. Think back to times in your life when you feared change, but in the end what you feared most didn’t happen at all. In fact, you thrived. Change can be scary, but it’s not always bad.

3. When possible, prepare

Sometimes we see change coming, in those cases, such as moving to a new city, or retiring from your job, you can take steps to prepare yourself. Even in the midst of chaos we can see light at the end of the tunnel.

4. Quiet your mind

In the midst of a change we fear, our thoughts can be our worst enemy. Be conscious of what your mind is telling you. Are your fears rational or are you possibly only allowing yourself to focus on the worst possible outcome? If calming your mind seems difficult, you can try relaxation techniques such as mindfulness or deep breathing.

5. Be kind to yourself

In times of change we can feel a bit out of control. This is normal. Remember to give yourself a break and be kind to yourself. We all struggle at times, no one can operate at 100 percent, of the time. Forgive yourself for these times.

6. Talk it out

Finally, if you still find yourself truly struggling with the changes you are facing, seek help. Knowing yourself well enough to realize you need assistance is a sign of strength. No one goes through life alone. Confiding in family or friends can provide you the added support you’re needing. So, can seeking help through therapy.

HERE’S A TIP

Use an empty paper towel roll to store plastic grocery bags. Just stuff to capacity. These “bag sticks” are easy to store in a drawer or even mounted on the side of a trash can with double-stick tape.

If you are getting your outdoor furniture ready to use, here’s a great cleaning idea. Load it all in the back of a truck, take it to a self-serve car wash and clean with the pressure hoses. Let dry, and it’s ready.

Oscar winner Jamie Foxx (55) was on a fast-moving career train starring in four films this year when his train disappeared from the tracks. The speculation is that Foxx disappeared, too? Rumors floated that he was in a hospital, but no one was talking. Finally, sources claimed he’d suffered a stroke.
