EDITOR

NOTE

CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE Spring is officially here, so it’s time to start planning for the fun of summer! It’s amazing how quickly life passes by, but what amazes me most is how adjusting just one or two things of my daily routine can change my entire perspective. Whether it’s trying to have a positive attitude or being more aware of those around me, little things can make a big difference. This month, keep your eyes open for someone who may need a caring word or a hand up rather than a hand out. Inside is an idea for you and your family to put together kits you can keep in your car, so when you encounter someone in need, you’ll be prepared to offer practical help rather than just a pocketful of change.

Now that a sense of calm has been restored to the Valley of the Sun— with the Cactus League and NCAA Basketball Championships wrapped up—it’s probably time to start your spring cleaning. We’ve included several articles with ideas to help you get those chores done more efficiently. The days are getting longer and you’re probably gearing up for the push to the end of the school year, so take a few moments to go outside and play catch or take a walk with those you love and enjoy the beautiful weather. Happy Spring! Melissa Cox Melissa@thegrandseason.com Editorial Director

YOU

SHAME

Don’t let it kill your happiness

experienced, done, or failed to do makes us unworthy of connection.” We all experience shame, and it kills our happiness. Do you think you’re a lousy mother because you can’t bake or you rarely make it on your kids’ field trips? Maybe you label yourself a fat, ugly loser because you haven’t lost those last 20 pounds. Or you berate yourself for speaking up at last week’s staff meeting. Shame says, “I suck,” “I’m a loser,” or in the case of my divorce, “I’m a failure.” Setting it straight I’m not a “failure”. My marriage failed. You’re not a “fat loser.” You gained weight. This distinction is important for healing, connection and happiness. If you see yourself as the issue, you become anxious and depressed. But when you separate yourself from the behavior or event, you isolate it as something you can evaluate and change. The key is to turn shame on its head and allow it to be a trigger for self-love and change. Here’s how: 1. Normalize shame We all feel shame, we all struggle and share common struggles. Shame likes to hide in dark corners, so find someone you can speak safely to about your shame, with self-compassion and kindness. Find a friend, a therapist or an online community.

When I got divorced, I felt like I had a flashing scarlet “D” on my forehead. My father asked, “What am I supposed to tell my friends?” At a new doctor’s office, they checked “D” on my paperwork. And dating? Forget it. I was now damaged goods. It seemed I couldn’t escape the stigma of failure. I was 26 years old, and I felt certain that a veil of shame would haunt me for the rest of my life. Unworthy of connection Researcher Brené Brown, Ph.D., says shame makes us believe, “that we are flawed and therefore unworthy of love and belonging—[that] something we’ve

10

The Grand Season family

April 2017

2. Find the triggers What sets your shame off? Which of your character traits cause you to feel self-loathing? What life events do you keep hidden? Ask yourself: What is the actual fear under the shame? With my divorce, I was afraid of being an outcast, and I had to face my need for approval and perfection. I began to work on my fear of imperfection and accept that not everyone will like me. I worked to accept the triggers of shame, and I became more accepting and loving with myself. 3. Get support Shame undermines life. If you feel alone, fear rejection, don’t communicate well, feel stuck, or are a bit lost you may be harboring shame. Diffusing shame can be hard to do on your own. Get support to work through your shame so that you can have the happy, thriving life you desire and deserve. Yes, you. Carin Rockind is a speaker, author and coach. www.grandseasonfamily.com

MR. CLEAN

SPRING HAS SPRUNG Time to get it done?

WASH WINDOWS Be sure to pick a cloudy day to wash windows. “If it’s too sunny, the cleaning solution will dry too fast and you’ll have streaks,” says author Donna Smallin. For a window-washing solution, Smallin combines 1/2 cup of sudsy ammonia (which is a specific type of ammonia), 1 pint of rubbing alcohol, 1 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid, and 1 gallon of water. OVERLOOKED SURFACES You may overlook these surfaces on a daily basis, but once a year, give your baseboards, door frames, and walls a good scrub-down. DEEP-CLEAN CARPETS To maintain a new carpet’s warranty, you may need to have it cleaned professionally every 12-18 months. CLEAN UNDER FURNITURE & APPLIANCES Grab a partner and move your sofa and chairs, roll up area rugs, then vacuum the floors. Move your kitchen appliances away from the wall as much as you can.

SAFETY INSPECTION Spring cleaning is the perfect opportunity to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Perform all required safety checks. If you don’t own a fire extinguisher, purchase one. Learn how to use it, and keep it in the kitchen. EXTERIOR PAINT Spring is the perfect time to freshen the face of your home with a new paint job. An updated color scheme can take your house from forgettable to traffic-stopping. POWER WASH Having your home’s exterior and windows power-washed won’t just make your home look sharp, but will let the light shine throughout your home.

REFRESH WINDOW TREATMENTS Curtains and draperies aren’t typically dirty enough to launder. Instead, go over them thoroughly with the upholstery attachment on your vacuum. “To remove dust from sheer curtains, put them in the dryer on low with a fabric-softener sheet,” Smallin says. DUST LIGHT FIXTURES Use a microfiber or lint-free cloth to dust fixtures and bulbs you can reach. For ceiling fans, skip the ladder and use an extendable duster. To clean grimy bulbs, lightly dampen your cloth with vinegar. Caution: Be sure bulbs are cool to the touch and your hands are dry.

LIFESTYLE

FIND INSPIRATION 5 bold steps to reshape your life

Remember that New Year’s resolution you set? Or the one you were afraid to set? For the new house, better health or more meaningful relationship? It’s not too late. But nothing will change unless you do. This can still be the year you start living the life you want. Start by employing these five tips:

LIVE A LIFE THAT IS TRUE TO YOU

What is the life you imagine? And what needs to change? Family? Then make that the priority. Is it skill building? Then tackle a class. Is it where you live, or who you share life with (or want to share it with)? Chart one bold step toward change. Figure out what keeps you from change. Find what is true to you and take one tangible step. Live life now.

MEASURE YOUR TIME

Once time is spent, it’s gone. Think of it as currency and manage it like money. If you tracked your time, what would you discover about how you spend that limited resource? Change the allocation and budget time toward accomplishing the life you want. If you want to change your life, change how you spend your time.

GROWTH

UNLOCK YOUR POTENTIAL Find your passion and purpose

What is your life’s true purpose? Many of us on the path to self-improvement and greater happiness have pondered this question. But have you ever sat down, in the quiet, and waited for an answer?

Visioning is a tool that may help you find that answer. “Just as the oak tree is already within the acorn, there are gifts of divinity, beauty, love and harmony that are already within you. Life visioning allows you to become available to that information,” explains best-selling author Michael Bernard Beckwith. Visioning allows you to ask yourself questions that open you to receiving information and insights from your higher mind. Here are 7 steps you can use in visioning to help you find your passion and purpose: 1. GET CENTERED. Let the worries of the day fall away. If your mind wanders to your to-do list or what you’re going to eat later, gently pull it back to the present. Call forth a feeling of unconditional love. 2. PLACE A QUESTION BEFORE YOUR HIGHER SELF. Ask for the vision. What is the highest purpose for my life? My project? Don’t force an answer. Allow images, thoughts and ideas to emerge. Write down everything that comes to mind. 3. WHAT QUALITIES MUST I CULTIVATE TO MANIFEST THIS VISION? In his book Life Visioning: A Transformative Process for Activating Your Unique Gifts and Highest Potential, Michael writes that this step may require you to

18

The Grand Season family

April 2017

change in certain ways to realize your purpose and dreams. Be honest with yourself about how you might need to grow. 4. WHAT QUALITIES MUST I LET GO OF? Acknowledge the limiting beliefs that hold you back from realizing your full potential. Those beliefs may have served a purpose but now it’s time to let them go. 5. WHAT QUALITIES DO I ALREADY POSSESS THAT WILL SERVE THIS VISION? Recognize your special talents and positive attributes. 6. SAY YES TO WHAT COMES THROUGH. Be willing to receive the vision. 7. EXPRESS GRATITUDE FOR THE VISION. Close with a feeling of gratitude. Know your inborn talents and traits make your vision for the future entirely possible. How does that feel? Don’t expect a detailed outline for your future from one session. If you only receive a word, phrase or feeling, that’s okay. As you remain open and receptive, additional thoughts and ideas may appear as time goes on to pull you closer to your true purpose.

MONEY

LIFE INSURANCE 5 things companies don’t tell you

A life insurance policy can be the difference between financial security and disaster. Uninsured families may be left struggling to pay bills, including final expenses. Insurance can be especially important since nearly half of all Americans have no or very little emergency savings. Still, you need to know what life insurance can and can’t do for you. Here are five things your life insurance company won’t always tell you:

1

NOT EVERYONE NEEDS LIFE INSURANCE. While most people with debt and dependents benefit from having life insurance, it’s not for everyone. Your kids probably don’t need life insurance. The purpose of life insurance is to replace lost income, pay final expenses (between $5,000-10,000) or accrue cash value. Your child probably doesn’t have an income that would need replacing, and even though funerals are costly (and you don’t want to have to think about how to pay for it if tragedy hits) you are highly unlikely to ever need it. For college savings, there are other ways to save that offer tax benefits a whole life policy doesn’t.

2

NO TYPE OF POLICY FITS EVERYONE. There are three basic types of life insurance: term (the cheapest kind, it has an end date), whole (costs more, has no end date, accrues cash value and premiums are fixed) and universal (also permanent and accrues, but the premiums can vary).

20

The Grand Season family

April 2017

Insurance agents are happy to sell you any kind of policy, but of course they get a higher commission the more expensive the policy. The best fit depends on factors like your age, health, and why and how long you need it.

3

ONLINE TOOLS CAN HELP YOU FIGURE OUT HOW MUCH LIFE INSURANCE YOU NEED. A quick web search for “life insurance calculator” will yield calculators that are not from insurance companies or anyone in the insurance industry. It is good starting point before talking to an insurance agent. Try Yahoo Finance and Nerd Wallet.

YOUR TERM LIFE POLICY DOESN’T (ALWAYS) HAVE TO END. Term life is cheapest because it has an end date. It provides insurance for when you most need it, such as until your kids finish college. However, most term policies sold today are convertible — at the end of the initial term you can either continue with a new term (at a higher www.grandseasonfamily.com

rate), or convert the term policy to whole life (also at a higher rate).

5

YOU MAY BE ABLE TO SELL YOUR TERM POLICY FOR CASH. Your life insurance company is unlikely to tell you of any alternatives to letting the policy expire or converting it to a more expensive new policy. But you may be able to unlock the value in your policy by selling it to outside investors for a lump-sum cash payment. Most of us (and our families) depend on the security life insurance provides. Make sure you fully understand what you need, what you don’t and what a policy provides.

TEENS

SPENDING HABITS Help adjust your teen’s mindset

The teen years are a great time to teach your child some valuable life-skills about money. Especially since they have a high desire for money at this age and are only a few short years away from being in charge of their own finances. This becomes an ideal time to temper all that desire for the newest electronic or name-brand thing with the realities of a budget. If you are struggling with how to address your teen’s spending habits, try the following ideas:

Include your teen in family discussions Let them see how much income the family brings in, how much monthly expenses are, the amount put into savings, and what is left as discretionary funds. Once they understand where the money goes, it may help them realize that you’re not trying to make their life difficult; you simply don’t have an endless supply of money.

22

The Grand Season family

Allow them to budget their allowance If you haven’t already done so, provide them a set allowance for spending every week. Take into account if they buy lunch at school or pay for their own gas. Show them the importance of setting up a budget to ensure they have money when they need it, rather than spending it as soon as they get it. Resist the urge to rescue them when they

April 2017

blow their budget and run out of money. We all have to live on a budget—It’s guaranteed to hurt a little, and that’s okay. Suggest a part-time job If there is time in your teen’s schedule, a part-time job is an excellent chance to learn about money. Or have them do extra chores. It will help them realize that money doesn’t just appear. You have to work to bring www.grandseasonfamily.com

money in to your household—and someday so will they. Teach them to save Don’t forget to teach your teen to save for short-term (that guitar they want) and long-term (a car) goals as well as unexpected expenses. Armed with some knowledge and good-habits, your teen will be more prepared when financial reality hits their world—and their wallet.

KIDS

ORGANIZED CHAOS Cultivate your child’s organizational skills

KEEP A FAMILY CALENDAR. Track everyone’s activities on a prominent and accessible calendar, encouraging your child to write her own entries and reference the calendar when making plans. You also might consider checking schedules and updating the calendar as a family over Sunday breakfast.

INTRODUCE CHECKLISTS. “Things To do before bed,” “Things to do before school,” “How to pack your lunch,” or “Items to pack for vacation,” creating and referring to lists together will develop your child’s ability to strategize tasks and organize his time.

ASSIGN CHORES THAT INVOLVE SORTING OR CATEGORIZING. Grocery shop, empty the dishwasher, cleaning the closet, and other tasks that involve pre-planning, making lists, or arranging things are great choices.

ORGANIZE SCHOOLWORK. Make sure your child’s keeping notes, homework, handouts, and graded assignments in separate folders in a binder. Try to check backpacks and create a checklist to ensure all items are accounted for. CREATE A SUPPLY DRAWER. Fill a drawer with school supplies and remind them to check the drawer when they run out. Keep rulers, calculators and other items that are easily lost, so they understand how being organized saves times. REWARD AND PROVIDE CONTINUED SUPPORT. Your child may find organizing a challenge, so help her develop a routine.

HEALTH

CONFUSED?

Guilty pleasure or health food

D

id you dance in delight when you heard that dark chocolate is good for you? Did you think that your favorite indulgence just became an official “health food?” Popular culture often makes too much of health benefit claims, especially when it comes to food and drink that many people consider guilty pleasures. Here is the truth behind two common ‘health foods’:

DARK CHOCOLATE IS GOOD FOR YOU

Wouldn’t it be great if every time you bit into your favorite chocolate candy bar you were doing something healthful? While chocolate did not just become a health food, there is a compound in chocolate, cocoa flavonoids, that has health benefits. Studies show that cocoa flavonoids help promote healthy blood flow which can decrease the risk of heart attack and stroke. Consuming your favorite chocolate treat may have some great benefits and make you feel happy, but chocolate can also contain excess calories, fat and sugar, which certainly are not a health benefit. So, yes, grab a piece of chocolate (the darker the better), but do not assume it’s like you’ve taken a trip to the gym.

RED WINE PROMOTES HEALTH

Red wine’s claim to fame is largely tied to the presence of a powerful compound, called resveratrol, found in the skin of grapes. Population studies have shown that individuals who include wine in their regular diet have better overall cardiovascular health, a benefit that may be related to wine’s resveratrol content.

It’s human nature to wish our favorite foods and drinks would also be healthful. While there’s no denying that a piece of chocolate or glass of red wine can be satisfying to the soul and the tongue, the reality is that a balanced diet, rich in fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein will always be best for your health.

If you aren’t already drinking red wine daily, doctors generally do not recommend that you start just to get the health benefits. In addition to the calories, some people would prefer not to have the alcoholic content. Luckily, red wine is not the only source of resveratrol. If you would like to increase your resveratrol intake, you can eat more of other foods that contain it, such as peanuts, pistachios, blueberries, cranberries and, yes, grapes! These foods are also rich in other beneficial nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and fiber. And the whole family can enjoy them!

dealing with chilly weather—the yurts come equipped with beds, heat and electricity.

Why the kids will love it: Camping is just more fun when you’re staying in a yurt. Kids get the run of the campground to explore, plus there are nearby tide pools, whale watching and swimming.

What you need to know: Yurts easily sleep five, and they should be reserved on recreation.gov well in advance of travel. United Airlines flies to Southwest Oregon Regional Airport, which is just 11 miles from the park; Portland International Airport is about a four-and-a-half-hour drive.

If you have older kids in tow, hike the fourmile Oregon Coast Trail that winds from the beach to Cape Arago State Park. If you have smaller kids or just want a shorter walk (about two miles), follow the signs from the mouth of the big creek to the viewpoint overlooking Sunset Bay. Why you’ll love it too: The sites feel very private, and there’s no need to worry about packing tents and air mattresses or

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA Why the kids will love it: San Diego—home to the San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari Park and Sea World—is a paradise for kids who love animals. The zoo houses the largest number of pandas outside mainland China, and there’s also a children’s zoo where

younger tots can pet animals or do arts and crafts. At the Wild Animal Park, you can take a safari walk and see elephants, lions and giraffes—or hop on the Journey into Africa tram to glimpse zebras, buffalo and ostriches. Why you’ll love it too: If you’re looking for more adult pastimes, San Diego has a thriving craft brew scene and the Del Mar Racetrack is a ton of fun to attend during the summer. It’s also just a short drive to get there—no airfare needed.

JUST NEED A DAY OFF? Consider a Staycation. Visit the websites of some of the local resorts you’d love to spend time at, pack up the kids and head to your favorite pool—you can’t beat the summer rates. Take a day off and enjoy your kids—and let someone else clean up after you! You’ll be amazed at the difference just a day makes.

COMING ATTRACTIONS Movies not to miss!

GOING IN STYLE You’re never too old to get even. PG-13 Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Alan Arkin team up as lifelong buddies Willie, Joe and Al, who decide to buck retirement and step off the straight-and-narrow for the first time in their lives when their pension fund becomes a corporate casualty. Desperate to pay the bills and come through for their loved ones, the three risk it all by embarking on a daring bid to knock off the very bank that absconded with their money. LEAP! PG 11-year-old orphan, Félicie (Elle Fanning) has one dream—to go to Paris and become a dancer. Her best friend Victor (Nat Wolff) an imaginative, but exhausting boy with a passion for creating has a dream of his own, to become a famous inventor. In a leap of faith, Victor and Félicie leave their orphanage in pursuit of their passions. But, there’s a catch, Félicie must pretend to be the child of a wealthy family in order to gain admittance to the prestigious and competitive Opera Ballet School in Paris. And with no professional dance training, she quickly learns that talent alone is not enough to overcome the ruthless, conniving attitudes of her fellow classmates, led by the devious Camille Le Haut (Maddie Ziegler). Determined to succeed, Félicie finds her mentor in the tough and mysterious school custodian, Odette (Carly Rae Jepsen) who, along with Victor’s encouraging friendship, help her reach for the stars.

THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS New roads ahead. PG-13 From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world’s stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family. Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game—and the rest of the crew has been exonerated—the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman (Oscar® winner Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.

LOVE

FIGHT FAIR

Put down your gloves

Arguing with your partner is part of life—but having the skills to keep things from escalating can mean the difference between a devastating battle and a win-win. Look at these suggestions from some experts who help people deal with conflict daily. 1. Actively listen. Then repeat. Conflict activates the reptilian part of our brains, which makes us fight, flee, or freeze. But you can get out of that trap if you pause before reacting—and fully understand what your partner is communicating. Try to quiet whatever is going on in your head so you can truly hear your partner. Really listen, then say, “Let me see if I get what you’re saying. You feel [insert info here], correct?” Make sure your partner sees you trying to hear accurately. Then give him or her a chance to expand: “Can you tell me more about that?” Maybe you even say, “That makes sense.” Then it’s your turn to share how you see things. Even if your original stance is unchanged, this sort of exchange decelerates the energy and calms you both down so you can have a dialogue.

32

The Grand Season family

April 2017

www.grandseasonfamily.com

2. State your needs clearly. You can’t expect your partner to read your mind, no matter how in love you might be or how “obvious” your complaint may seem. Subtlety is overrated— especially in the heat of the moment (or when you’re sleep deprived, stressed about a big deadline at work, or both)—and it only leads to more resentment. So don’t forget to say what you need! Whether it’s something concrete (“I need more help unloading the groceries”) or emotional (“When you wipe the counter, it helps me feel listened to and cared for”), it’s up to you to give your partner a clue about how to make you happier. Not only will that make arguments more productive, but prevent certain fights altogether.

3. Deliver a really good apology. Just saying “I’m sorry” doesn’t always cut it. The person is not only upset with what you did, but worried that you’ll do it again. The normal human tendency is to minimize the mistake we made, which ticks off the other person. So instead, maximize it. Suppose you made plans for your family without asking your spouse. Acknowledge that: “It was really rude of me to assume you wanted to go.” Second, admit the real wrong. For example, “I’m sorry I disrespected your time like that.” If you don’t know exactly what the real wrong was, keep talking until you do. Finally, repair the mistake if possible or show sincerely that it won’t happen again. Simply saying something like “In the future, I’ll check with you” shows your partner you’re reaching for a solution.

FOOD

REFUEL & REFRESH

Simple tips to refresh lunch (and your kids)

You’re running out the door, already late and thinking about that important 8 a.m. meeting. Lunch is the last thing on your mind. In fact, you usually just pick something up from the deli line or local fast food place and hurry back to your desk. Sound familiar? You’re not alone. Only one in five people actually ditch their desks during their lunch hour. When you feel your stomach growl, it’s all too easy to grab something from the vending machine or pack a cold turkey sandwich. But there are plenty of easy ways to spice up your lunchtime routine at work. Here are some tips to makeover your midday meal: WALK AWAY FROM YOUR DESK. Do you eat at your desk every day? You have a lunch break for a reason; so use it. You’re busy and need a few minutes to recharge throughout the day. You’ll come back refreshed and ready to be productive for the rest of the afternoon. Leaving your desk will help you become a more mindful eater and you’ll

34

The Grand Season family

April 2017

enjoy your meal more. Take a walk, socialize with coworkers, do something that gets you up and moving for at least 15 minutes. STRAY FROM THE PB AND J. Peanut butter and jelly might be a staple, but it’s time for a grown-up work lunch. You can find sandwich fixings that are not only easy and quick, but take your lunch to the next level. Try a gourmet chicken salad, it’s a better-for-you option, saving you calories and fat. FIND A NEW WAY TO PACK YOUR SALAD. Forget about soggy, wilted lettuce. One of the best ways to pack a salad is in a quart-sized canning jar. Put your dressing on the bottom, add in your lettuce, veggies and any other salad toppings. Everything stays separate until it’s time to toss together. Simply pour the salad out into a bowl and you’re ready to eat. Your salad will also last for a couple of days in the fridge.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

FUN

TIME TO CONNECT Do something new with your crew

Now that Spring is here, your weekends are most likely getting busier. But as daylight get’s longer and our temperatures are still enjoyable, it’s time take a break from the chaos of chores and to spend some time as a family. While you’re family may be at that fragile stage where nobody get’s along, perhaps trying new activities will allow everyone to share a space without conflict.

TAKE A HIKE Find a trail near you and head out in the morning to enjoy nature at it’s best. The greater Phoenix area is a home to thousands of hiking and biking trails, just search for the one closest to you and explore. Don’t forget to take snacks, plenty of water and sunscreen. HEAD TO THE LAKE Lake Pleasant isn’t that far away! Rent a boat and a raft. Pack your swimsuits and a cooler of plenty of

food and beverages. Spending the day at the lake tubing, fishing or swimming will provide time for the whole family to decompress. TAKE IN A GAME Living in a city like Phoenix allows you access to professional sports, unlike many other cities in the world. Purchase some cheap tickets, put on your team gear and head to the closest stadium. www.grandseasonfamily.com

— CELEBRATING 28 YEARS! —

ONE YEAR LATER!

Among this year’s Gala highlights, we saw two patients who underwent live eyelid surgery in 2016 and their results have impacted their lives in many positive ways. “For me, upper eyelid surgery was about independence, maintaining my ability to drive. Not having to strain my neck to look side to side. Thank you Dr. Justo!” —Fran Martin BEFORE Eyelid Surgery
