STRONGER TOGETHER Resolutions couples should make
This time of year, it’s natural to focus inward, thinking about healthy new habits, self-improvement and professional advancement. Consider channeling part of that New Year’s spirit into your bond with your partner, resolving to not just spend more time together—but to do it all better, with these easy tips for improving a relationship at any age or stage.
Ask more questions
And pay attention to the answers. Resolving to be more inquisitive helps both of you: You become more engaged (“Why was that meeting so stressful?” “How could you make that project a little more fun?”), and the give-and-take pushes you to be thoughtful about your own day.
Turn complaints into questions
Before you blurt out exactly what’s on your mind—“You golf so much, I never see you!”—think about your intent. What are you trying to say? In this case, say you want to spend more down time with your partner. Then put yourself in his shoes. Rather than hearing a complaint, wouldn’t you rather hear, “I miss you! I’ve been feeling lonely.” He may not immediately solve the problem of golfing too much, but asking him more about the situation starts a conversation.
Talk a little less, and touch more
Sound counterintuitive? The thing is, for couples that have a hard time communicating their emotions, a big hug can go a long way. Resolve to hold hands every time you watch TV or hug each other every morning or evening—or both.
Take a break mid-fight to say “I Love You”
It might be the last thing on your mind, but when things get heated, try to get those words out. Instead of ratcheting up emotion, you can diffuse it. Those words remind you both of the big picture. And in the cool-down period afterward, you know everything’s going to be good.
Compliment more than you nag
Try to keep feedback of all sorts balanced. Better yet, keep things more heavily weighted in the positive. It’s easy, especially as the years go by, to forget to thank your partner for the little things he’s always done. If you catch yourself doling out criticism, remind yourself to verbalize compliments and appreciation as well.
Let it go
In every committed relationship, there are things one party might like—no, love—to change. Maybe it makes you crazy that your husband leaves his water glass on the table or leaves the lights on. Let it go. To gain a little perspective, imagine what your life would be like if the water glass wasn’t there (and neither is he). When you think of it like that, those annoying little things aren’t that hard to let go.

Explore new hobbies
Another sleepy Sunday? Today’s the day you try Ethiopian food, attend a ballet or take a painting class — whatever feels fun. When researchers followed 7,500 people for 25 years, they found that those who complained of major boredom were roughly twice as likely to die from heart disease.
Play upbeat music
Research shows that blasting any happy-making tune can work multiple mind-body wonders, including reducing pain during exercise, elevating mood and lowering stress.
Go to bed on time, with your partner
Getting sufficient sleep can make you feel ready for action. A study, in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, found that women who got more sleep had more desire the next day and an easier time becoming aroused. Every additional hour they slept increased their likelihood of having sex by 14%, so skip late-night web searches and hit the hay.
Give yourself more compliments
Repeat after us: “Today is my day. I’m thankful for me.” Positive self-talk can help you focus on what’s good in your life. Research shows that a little vitamin G (for gratitude) can make you feel happier and more satisfied and even improve your sleep.

MAKE LIFE BETTER
Take care of yourself this year by starting some new habits.
Stop hitting the snooze button.
Many people believe snoozing several times is a gentler way to wake up, but this actually causes sleep to be more disrupted, leaving the person feeling more sleepy. Instead, sleep experts recommend being honest with oneself and setting the alarm for the time you actually get up. Your body will then learn to prepare for waking at that time and you will feel less tired over the course of the day.
Open the blinds as soon as you rise.
Make it a habit to open the blinds as soon as you wake up each day. Even just five minutes of sunlight first thing in the morning not only boosts your vitamin D levels, but also helps balance your cortisol (aka stress) levels.

Doodle or color.
Whether you use colored pencils to create your own drawings, or doodle in an adult coloring book, your mind and body relax when you’re engaging in a focused, soothing activity. Get outside.
No matter how busy you are, make it a habit to step outside for a breath of fresh air each
day. Doing this, even for short increments at a time, provides you with many health benefits— both physical and mental. Research suggests spending time outside helps you sleep better at night, lowers heart rate, reduces stress levels, boosts mental health, and stimulates the immune system.
Exercise regularly.
Getting your heart rate up increases your happy hormones (serotonin, dopamine, etc.), thus improving your mood, pleasure, and reducing pain. And this doesn’t require long hours in the gym, six days a week. Something as simple as three to four days each week, walking briskly or doing a quick 30-minute circuit routine can meet your needs. It all counts.
Banish your phone from the bedroom.
Ideally, your bedroom is a sanctuary for sleep, relaxation, and intimacy. Phones, TVs and laptops disrupt all of those things. Take care of your physical

Last summer, the Department of Veterans Affairs brought together 80 women veteran business owners for a sixmonth boot camp hosted by PenFed and the VA Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBU). The goal: teach them how to grow their businesses. The education they received was like a fasttracked MBA with handson classes in product/ market analysis, business development and more. At the end of the six months there was a pitch competition to win a grant for their business. The Veteran Entrepreneur Investment Program (VEIP), in collaboration with PenFed, has much to offer veterans who already have a business up and running. Application deadline for the Spring 2022 program is Jan. 30. The eight-week program is part of an intensive one-year Master’s Program. CAN’T SHAKE IT?
The average American, after all, gets two to three colds a year, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Most colds last only three to five days, but you can still be congested or have a cough for up to two weeks. The trouble is, colds can linger longer or get worse as a result of lifestyle habits and behaviors, including those you might otherwise have thought were healthy. Have you made any of these mistakes?
You could be making your cold worse
Exercise can be a mental godsend when you’re sick, lifting your spirits at the very least. But don’t take this as permission to give it your all when you’re sick, or you could make yourself worse. If you have a fever, cough, chest congestion or upset stomach, hold off on all exercise until those symptoms resolve.
Mistake #1: Not backing off your intensity at the gym.
Mistake #2: Telling yourself you’re not sick. If you’ve always subscribed to the mind-over-matter philosophy when it comes to recovering from colds, give it up. Pretending you’re not sick might not encourage you to dial back your activities, which means you could overexert yourself, thus making symptoms worse and delaying recovery.
Mistake #3: Skimping on sleep.
Sleep might sink to the bottom of your regular to-do list—the CDC reports that one in three Americans don’t get the sleep they need—but when you’re sick, sleep becomes even more critical. Inadequate sleep can reduce the function of the immune system and prolong recovery from colds. The problem is, cold symptoms like coughing and congestion can keep you awake when you’re trying to sleep. If that’s the case, try using over-the-counter medications to sleep better.
Mistake #4: Overusing decongestants. Decongestants can certainly make you feel better, and even sleep better, which can shorten the course of your cold. Using a nasal decongestant for longer than one or two days, however, could spell trouble. When used beyond three days, experts say typical decongestant nasal sprays can make your congestion worse.

DELETE DEBT Strategies to eliminate credit card debt
If one of your goals for the next 12 months is to eliminate credit card debt, experts suggest the following tips will help you achieve your goal.
1. Target just one card first
If you’re carrying balances on multiple cards, it can be a long haul to wipe out those debts. So give yourself a boost of instant gratification right from the start. Ask yourself: What short-term financial goal will make me feel as though I’m making meaningful progress on debt reduction?
2. Ask your creditors for lower interest rates
Often a simple phone call to the issuer is all it takes to get a reduced rate—provided that you have good credit and you are a long-term customer who makes payments on time. You could get a percentage point or two shaved off, which can add up to hundreds of dollars saved annually.
3. Make two minimum payments each month. Card issuers typically charge interest on a daily basis, so the sooner you make a payment, the faster your average daily balance is reduced, which translates into fewer dollars in interest that you ultimately pay.
