Technically, summer doesn’t start until June 21st. But many people consider Memorial Day to be the unofficial start of the season.

MEMORIAL DAY

This year, we celebrate the holiday on May 30th. Many families will heat up the grill, head to the beach or take in a big blockbuster movie. But Memorial Day has the word “memorial” in it for a reason. The holiday got started on May 30, 1868, when Union General John A. Logan declared the day an occasion to decorate the graves of Civil War soldiers. Twenty years later, the name was changed to Memorial Day. On May 11, 1950, Congress passed a resolution requesting that the President issue a proclamation calling on Americans to observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace and designating a period on that day when the people of the United States might unite in prayer. President Richard M. Nixon declared Memorial Day a federal holiday in 1971. Memorial Day is now observed on the last Monday of May. It is an occasion to honor the men and women who died in all wars.

Remembering Those Who Served.

It is customary to mark Memorial Day by visiting graveyards and war monuments. One of the biggest Memorial Day traditions is for the President or Vice President to give a speech and lay a wreath on soldiers’ graves in the largest national cemetery, Arlington National Cemetery, in Virginia. We are thankful for your sacrifice!

Q. I recently read about a predatory lender that is targeting people buying dogs at some pet stores. These loans have insane interest rates as high as 130% to 189%! Please warn your readers to avoid taking out highinterest loans to buy a new pet. A: A recent CBS News report warned about a lending business called EasyPay Finance that charges huge interest rates. Predatory loans and pet stores that source from puppy mills are a nasty storm of awfulness. 1 (8-oz.) can ginger beer 1 tbsp. freshly grated ginger Juice of 1 lime 4 c. ice 4 oz. dark rum

Directions

In a blender, blend ginger beer, fresh ginger, lime juice, and ice. Divide among 2 glasses and pour 2 oz. rum on top.

Directions

In a blender, combine frozen watermelon, ginger beer, vodka, and lime juice. Blend until smooth. (If it’s not slushy enough, add ice and blend again.) Pour into glasses (or copper mugs!) and garnish with mint leaves and lime slices.

4 c. orange juice 4 oz. silver tequila 2 oz. triple sec 2 tbsp. lime juice 4 oz. grenadine, divided Orange slices, for garnish Maraschino cherries, for garnish

Fill ice cube trays with orange juice and freeze until solid, 3 to 4 hours. When orange juice cubes are frozen, combine with tequila, triple sec, and lime juice in a blender. Blend until smooth. Pour 1 oz grenadine to the bottom of each glass, then fill each with blended drink. Garnish with a slice of orange and a maraschino cherry and serve.

Leaving behind a legacy means making an impact that will last long after you die. It could be financial, with something you create, or through the people you touch while you’re alive. Evaluate your life

When it comes down to it, leaving a legacy meaning is simply knowing that you’ve left your mark on the world. The best thing to do is stop where you are now and evaluate. If you died today, what would people say about you? Are you happy with being known for that? If you don’t like what you find, you can start asking how to leave a legacy that would make you happy.

Pass along your values

For many, the leaving a legacy definition applies specifically to the next generation. If you have children and grandchildren, take a look at the example you’re setting for them. Have you imparted the values you hold dear to you, both through example and by teaching them?

Practice generosity

When you’re looking at legacy examples, you’ll probably see a common theme. Generous people tend to touch more lives and, as a result, leave a stronger legacy. Generosity is fairly simple. You put others first. You do things to help those in need. It can be as simple as helping out a friend who has fallen on hard times, or as large-scale as pitching in to help after a local disaster.

Create a plan to transition your wealth

There’s also the sensitive subject of your financial legacy. What assets will you leave behind for your survivors? If you aren’t swimming in money, that’s okay.
