Giving thanks for and with your spouse is one of the most significant habits you can build into your marriage. Gratitude is an essential ingredient in any relationship, but it takes intentionality and time to put it into practice. VETERANS POST Veterans are victims of cybercrimes at a much higher rate than civilians. And it’s not just veterans, included are military spouses, survivors, active-duty personnel and our families. PRACTICE GRATITUDE
There’s no wrong way to keep a gratitude journal, but here are some general ideas as you get started. Write down up to five things for which you feel grateful. The physical record is important—don’t just do this exercise in your head. The goal of the exercise is to remember a good event, experience, person, or thing in your life—then enjoy the good emotions that come with it. As you write, here some helpful tips:
1. Be as specific as possible—specificity is key to fostering gratitude. “I’m
grateful that my neighbors brought me soup when I was sick,” will be more effective than “I’m grateful for my neighbors.”
2. Go for depth over breadth. Elaborating in detail about a particular person
or thing for which you’re grateful carries more benefits than a superficial list of many things.
3. Get personal. Focusing on people to whom you are grateful has more of an
impact than focusing on things for which you are grateful.
4. Try subtraction, not just addition. Consider what your life would be like
without certain people or things, rather than just tallying up all the good stuff. Be grateful for the negative outcomes you avoided, escaped, prevented, or turned into something positive—try not to take that good fortune for granted.
5. See good things as “gifts.” Thinking of the good things in your life as gifts
guards against taking them for granted. Try to relish and savor the gifts you’ve received.
6. Savor surprises. Try to record events that were unexpected or surprising, as these tend to elicit stronger levels of gratitude.
7. Write regularly. Whether you write every other day or once a week, commit to a regular time to journal, then honor that commitment.
8. Don’t overdo it. Evidence suggests writing occasionally (1-3 times per
week) is more beneficial than daily journaling. That might be because we adapt to positive events and can soon become numb to them—that’s why it helps to savor surprises.

Practicing gratitude helps you accept change.
When we are comfortable with the way things already are, it can be difficult to accept when things change—let alone feel grateful for that difference. But when we make it a habit to notice the good change brings, we can become more flexible and accepting.
Practicing gratitude can relieve stress.
The regions associated with gratitude are part of the neural networks that light up when we socialize and experience pleasure. These regions are also heavily connected to the parts of the brain that control basic emotion regulation, such as heart rate, and are associated with stress relief and thus pain reduction. Feeling grateful and recognizing help from others, creates a more relaxed body state and allows the subsequent benefits of lowered stress to wash over us.
Gratitude positively impacts our brains.
Practicing gratitude lights up the brain’s reward center. One study found that practicing gratitude by keeping a gratitude journal lights up the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, a key brain region associated with reward processing in the brain. People who practice gratitude also report fewer physical symptoms of illness, more optimism, greater goal attainment, decreased anxiety and depression, and many other health benefits. So this holiday season, make an effort to see how a little gratitude can improve your health and well-being.

THE LITTLE THINGS Seven ways to practice daily gratitude
As Jon Kabat-Zinn says, “The little things? The little moments? They aren’t little.” Saying thank you, holding the door for someone, these little moments can change the tone of your whole day. One of the most powerful ways to rewire your brain for more joy and less stress is to focus on gratitude. Here are seven simple ways to become more grateful:
1. Keep a gratitude journal.
Establish a daily practice in which you remind yourself of the gifts, grace, benefits, and good things you enjoy. Recalling moments of gratitude associated with ordinary events or people you value gives you the potential 26 THE THE GRAND GRAND SEASON SEASON •• NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2021 2021 26
to interweave a sustainable theme of gratefulness into your life.
2. Remember the bad. To be grateful in your current state, it is helpful to remember the hard times that you once experienced. When you remember how difficult life used to be and how far you have come, you set up an explicit contrast in your mind, and this contrast is fertile ground for gratefulness. 3. Ask yourself three questions. Think about
your relationships with friends, siblings, children, and partners using these three questions: “What have I received from __?”, “What have I given to __?”, and “What troubles and difficulty have I caused?”
4. Share your gratitude with others. Research has found
that expressing gratitude can strengthen relationships. So
the next time your partner, friend or family member does something you appreciate, make sure to tell them.
5. Use visual reminders.
Two primary obstacles to gratefulness are forgetfulness and a lack of awareness. Visual reminders can serve as cues to trigger thoughts of gratitude. Often times, the best visual reminders are other people.
6. Vow to practice gratitude.
Research shows that making an oath to perform a behavior increases the likelihood that the action will be executed. Therefore, write your own gratitude vow, which could be as simple as “I vow to count my blessings each day,” and post it somewhere where you will be reminded of it every day.
7. Go through the motions.

Jesse Ramirez, a native Arizonan, is passionate about feeding people in need. Not long after he started the Valley View Community Food Bank, Jesse and his team were feeding 300 people daily in 2007. Today, they are feeding over 540 per-day. About 48% of his clients are senior citizens over 55, and 32% are either children or adults in their 20’s. Each day, the food bank distributes 6,000 pounds of food. You may ask, where does the food come from? Jesse say’s, “Most of the food is donated from private food drives, churches, Sam’s Club, local scouting groups, private donations, businesses and organizations.” The main purpose of the Valley View Community Food Bank is to supply people in the community with wholesome food. Jesse says, “When you combine what people have gone through with COVID, unemployment, and higher food costs, the number of families needing assistance continues to grow. In order to keep up with the need, we honestly could use some additional help during Thanksgiving and Christmas.” If you are interested in helping Jesse and his team meet the need, you can participate in various ways; volunteering at the food bank, private food drives, donating shelf stable foods, canned veggies, fruits, can protein, boxed dinners or by donating money (100% of dollars are spent on needed food).
