W EL C OM E

Inside this booklet our aim is to whet your appetite and invite you into our world of dreams and passions. And when you have made your choices, and committed to your visits next summer, I sincerely wish that your hopes and desires will be richly satisfied. I am thrilled to be staging our first Puccini: Manon Lescaut, his first great success. A heart-wrenching tale of passion and despair, starring two young singers who have already turned heads and ears on The Grange stage, Elin Pritchard (Alice in Falstaff) sings Manon Lescaut, and Samuel Sakker, a winner in our 2017 singing competition, returns as Des Grieux. Conductor Francesco Cilluffo galvanized the BSO so stylishly in Falstaff and undoubtedly will do so again. Stephen Lawless, a colleague of many years, will bring vast international experience to create a new production for us. I was privileged to sing at Benjamin Britten’s last public appearance a few weeks before he died in 1976 and have enjoyed a long association with Aldeburgh and its Festival ever since. It gives special pleasure to be staging probably his most globally performed opera, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, to coincide with

the 60th anniversary of its first performance in Aldeburgh’s Jubilee Hall, exactly where I sang to its composer. Another longstanding operatic colleague, Paul Curran recreates for us his hugely acclaimed production made originally for Valencia opera house. Our chorus master since 2017, Antony Kraus, conducts. Hampshire school children will play the fairies, and the cast showcases new and established vocal talent of the highest quality. There is nothing quite so likely to raise the pulse as a slow building Rossini aria, piling on virtuosic vocal display and madcap Italian idiom and gradually accelerating towards musical exhilaration. We heard such two seasons ago in the Barber, and, by popular demand both of audience and performers, we return, with Cinderella. I am pleased to welcome back many of the same team complemented by international stars, some appearing in UK for the first time. We are proud to present three evenings of Dance@TheGrange curated by Wayne McGregor. One of the UK’s best loved national ballet companies under their new worldfamous Director will appear alongside Studio Wayne McGregor. This is ‘quite something’

to be able to announce. I have no doubt that this will be one of the hottest tickets of the Festival. Classical and modern ballet and some incredible contemporary dance will take the breath away. We will give you the names as soon as we can. And we offer two evenings of a ‘bonne bouche’, if one of the best-loved musicals of all can be squeezed into that epithet. My Fair Lady in full symphonic form – orchestra and chorus on stage, with the principals playing and singing the drama downstage, will be memorable. I personally cannot wait. We are hugely excited about the scale of our first community opera Jonathan Dove’s The Monster in the Maze which acts as the finale of our 2020 Festival. I look forward to telling you more about it. Last year you came in great numbers (around 95% attended every performance) and we were showered with critical plaudits. It seems we are on a bit of a roll. I relish the prospect of seeing you all again next year, with even more of your friends, and relations. Let us all enjoy being the ‘touchstone of English summer opera’.

LA CENERENTOLA

‘A classic fairy story. The handsome prince rescues the wronged orphan daughter’

Just as Rossini did, we follow The Barber of Seville with Cinderella (prompted, it must be admitted, by overwhelming demand from our successful 2018 Barber team). Who could resist such Rossinian luminaries? Josè Maria Lo Monaco returns in the title role, Stephen Barlow directs and David Parry conducts. This is for many their favourite Rossini opera. We are proud to present an entirely international cast in this much loved drama giocosa which fizzes with comic brilliance: Nico Darminan as Don Ramiro, Christian Senn as Dandini, Luciano di Pasquale as Don Magnifico, and the return of our 2019 Figaro, Roberto Lorenzi, as Alidoro.

‘In a wood near Athens fairies, young lovers and ham actors play havoc in antic hay’ We celebrate the 60th anniversary of one of opera’s most popular adaptations. Full of sensuality, fun, argument, chaos and reconciliation, Benjamin Britten’s voluptuous and translucent music illuminates Shakespeare at his luscious and comic best. Paul Curran’s heralded European production is remade for The Grange. Hampshire children play the fairies, rising stars the lovers, Jonathan Lemalu returns to sing Bottom, and The Grange Festival is proud to welcome South African sensation Vuvu Mpofu as Tytania and Royal Opera House Young Artist Patrick Terry as Oberon. Anthony Kraus conducts the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Wild thyme, oxlips, nodding violets, luscious woodbine, sweet musk roses and eglantine launch your sensory trip into dreamland…

‘The opera which made Puccini’s name and settled his music in the hearts of us all’ Puccini scored his first major success with this tragic depiction of urgent young love. Manon chooses luxury over love and pays the ultimate price. She is pursued across the Atlantic by her soulmate Chevalier des Grieux and dies in his arms. Packed with soaring melodies, and infused with raw emotion and a desperate sense of desolation, tears will flow and passions will boil. We are thrilled to present a new production created by the internationally renowned director Stephen Lawless and conducted by Italian star Francesco Cilluffo, returning after his triumphant Falstaff. Elin Pritchard returns to The Grange as Manon following her success as Alice in Falstaff in 2019; 2017 Grange Festival International Singing Competition finalist Samuel Sakker sings Des Grieux.

‘The perfect musical’

Since it stormed Broadway in 1956, Lerner and Loewe’s irresistible musical version of George Bernard Shaw’s social satire Pygmalion has become a monument of musical theatre. For the Festival in 2020, we present it as a staged concert, with the action of the characters sharing the stage with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and The Grange Festival Chorus. Guy Unsworth directs and Alfonso Casado Trigo, who led our Candide so winningly in 2018, conducts. Expect a cast to die for and an evening to savour deep in our hearts and long in our memories.

‘…beauty, passion, energy, elegance & drama. All of this and more on stage at The Grange’ ‘I am delighted to be returning to The Grange as Director of Dance for the third year in 2020. The Festival programme this past June received such a vibrant reception by the audience, and it was thrilling to launch the New Dance Commissioning project at The Grange with the premieres of two specially commissioned works by the intensely innovative Alice Topp and Mthuthuzeli November. I look forward to sharing with you our next programme of classical and modern ballet, alongside incredible contemporary dance, performed by Company Wayne McGregor and introducing an exciting new collaboration with an established, iconic UK ballet company, new to The Grange, for Dance@TheGrange 2020. And of course we look forward to two new commissions in this the second year of the New Dance Commissioning project at The Grange.’

T H E MONS T E R IN THE MAZE LE A R N I N G @TH EG R A N G E

‘An eight-month community project connecting generations and exploring the importance of family values’ A contemporary interpretation of the myth of the Minotaur focusing on the bonds of community and family. Theseus has to penetrate the labyrinth in order to kill the half-man halfbull Minotaur, which feeds on human flesh. Helped by his mother and the architect of the maze, Daedalus, he kills the Minotaur and frees the Athenian children, held as a regular supply of food for the monster. This is a searing portrayal of adolescent worry and fear of the future: the dangers of confusion and hopelessness. Heroes and role models are available to help them out of the labyrinth, and guide them away from danger and darkness, into the warmth and clarity of the Mediterranean light. They are shown the importance of resilience and courage to face the modern world.

EDUCAT ION F U N D

The Grange Festival commitment to education and community outreach is central to its principles. At a time when arts subjects, especially music, are dropping off our national curriculum, opera provides an important blend of music, drama, dance and design, giving young and old the opportunity to explore ideas and develop their imagination through the creative process. Learning@TheGrange has this year turned its focus on an even more ambitious goal: a community opera designed to connect diverse groups of local people, build intergenerational relationships and nurture mental wellbeing. Bringing together over 120 children, teenagers, parents, grandparents and friends – with an age span of over 70 years – this community project will result in the first fully-staged opera house production of Jonathan Dove’s internationally acclaimed The Monster in the Maze. It will be an eightmonth project, culminating in performances on 18 and 19 July as part of The Grange Festival 2020. The aim is for this eight-month project to spark discussion, tap into emotions and enable us to understand how creative

activity can help everyone, particularly the young, to stay mentally healthy. On a Monday morning last August, 70 teenagers from 20 different educational backgrounds came together at The Grange to create a contemporary opera, LikeUnlike, based on their experiences of social media, in five days. Anxious, apprehensive and believing opera to be irrelevant to them, they required real courage and determination to walk through our door and start working together. By the end of the week, they had debated the effects of social media and worked together in groups to develop a storyline, music, choreography and design for an hour-long show on Friday afternoon. In the process, they overcame personal inhibitions, expanded their imaginations, formed friendships and took creative ownership they even re-titled the opera #LitOnline. Earlier in the year, the Mozart in the Making project gave 150 children from five Hampshire primary schools, with little or no specialist arts teaching, the opportunity to reimagine Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro and perform on our magnificent stage at The Grange for an audience of friends

and families. A series of fun, immersive workshops preceded the day, and encouraged children to sing and create movement while introducing them to the magic of opera. During our main season, an interactive half-term workshop Fun with Figaro brought together children, parents, grandparents and friends to share a fun experience, and learn about Mozart and Da Ponte’s witty story and timeless music before watching the final rehearsal of our festival production. Secondary students were invited to explore Verdi’s masterpiece Falstaff using Shakespeare’s text from the Merry Wives of Windsor, and they too watched the final rehearsal of Christopher Luscombe’s much acclaimed contemporary production. In addition, over 300 young dancers were given the opportunity to attend a special performance from our Dance@TheGrange programme, featuring Company Wayne McGregor and Ballet Black, followed by a Q&A session to give an insight into the profession. Learning@TheGrange was always going to be an essential part of The Grange Festival, and we look forward to the 2020 season with enthusiasm. 19

All our Friends enjoy Priority Booking and all donations are acknowledged in the Festival programme. All Friends levels expire at the end of July each year. Welcoming groups from all parts of the world to our performances was a notable feature in 2019. We had sixteen teenage school children from Beijing, all dressed up to the nines, soaking up The Marriage of Figaro, as well as Friends’ groups from The Hague, Paris, Stockholm and Hong Kong, to mention just a few. The Grange Festival has established Friends’ organisations in Hong Kong and New York, and plans to do so in Milan, Paris, and Amsterdam.

We are working closely with More than Musical in HK to set up our first international collaboration which will see us sharing our expertise both here in the UK and in HK. Each year 2 or 3 students of the creative arts will be fully funded to come and learn as they work with us during our rehearsal and performance period. We will also run masterclasses in HK each year and share our skills in education and outreach work, using music and drama to

stimulate and nurture young minds with the positive energy of creativity and teamwork. These affiliations imply both substantial international support for the Festival as well as cross collaboration for education and professional training. And most importantly, people come from all these areas around the world to The Grange to see a performance. If you know of friends and colleagues who would like to be part of The Grange abroad, please let us know.
