Nothing on this planet is more attractive than a kind spirit with a positive attitude and a humble demeanor.
Lost, and Sons of Anarchy, but as with most young actors and creatives, he needed a way to survive between gigs. Building, designing and custom fabricating were the most natural solutions.
Add-in a killer, Tom Cruise-Top Gun smile, a hammer and a couple of power tools, a refreshing sense of humor and last but certainly not least, a heart of gold and you have the quintessential Sexy American Carpenter – Darren Keefe.
After a brief stint working out of his apartment, he set-up shop on the top floor of one of the famed industrial buildings in DTLA; he then began creating custom furniture and other pieces for a wide range of clientele. Naming this endeavor Drumcree, he has carried his Irish heritage with him everywhere he goes.
If he looks familiar, and he probably does, it’s either because you’ve seen him grace your television screen or perhaps you passed him on the sidewalk outside of Nick’s Cafe early one morning, Bacon Scramble and coffee in hand. Chances are, he gave you a big grin and nodded good morning. But what do we know about the man behind the smile? Who is he? What makes him tick and what’s his story? Downtown Weekly took one for the team and found out. Darren Keefe was born in Northern Ireland and comes from a family of craftsmen and builders. Spending time in both Ireland and the US during his youth, he was fortunate to learn from both sides of his family while developing his own craft. You could always find him hamming it up with his friends, making them laugh and keeping them entertained. He was and still is, a natural performer who loves the spotlight. He brought this talent with him when he moved to LA in 1998 to pursue acting. Getting right to work, he found roles on popular shows such as NCIS,
Drumcree is the name of the church in Northern Ireland where he was baptized and where much of his family history lies. Speaking of successes, he’s had more than a few. Starring in the recent reboot of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Darren combined his passions of entertainment, hand-crafting, and giving back to others. Being a part of creating incredible homes for incredible people has been a cherished experience. He has since branched out with a new digital series, in the same vein as Extreme Makeover, called Go Green, where well-deserving people are given green solutions to issues in their homes or elsewhere in their lives. Do we see a pattern here? We think so. Unfortunately for all of us in Los Angeles, Darren no longer works out of the downtown workshop where he used to revel in the timeless sunsets and views of Dodger Stadium’s shining lights.

Life has called him south and eastward to the good ole’ cobblestone streets of Charleston, South Carolina. Though we can be sad he is no longer in LA full-time, we can rejoice because he left to pursue and attain new heights in his career. Now working with a prominent builder in Charleston, he’s learning the delicate intricacies of restoring and updating historic homes, found in abundance in his new city. It only takes one glance at Darren’s portfolio to see he is a master craftsman, but he never takes that for granted. He is continuously working to increase his knowledge, gain new skills, and learn from those around him. “We all have days when you wake up and you doubt yourself. You don’t know exactly what your day is going to bring. I have found when I put kindness out into the universe…it ends up, in turn, making MY day. There is so much divisiveness in the world these days and I truly think the medicine for all of that is being kind to one another on a daily basis.” Darren lives these words almost religiously – spreading kindness, compassion and joy wherever he goes. Pop open your Instagram and watch him lift spirits by doing his “Dancing Carpenter” routine, every Monday, like clockwork. talks love for la, how she got started, and how she left her fears behind to pursue her dreams.
“The opportunities are so endless with L.A.,” Los Angeles has always transfixed Sakura Marketing owner and founder Andrea Romero. From visiting in the summers, Andrea got a taste of L.A. early on and had always dreamt of immersing herself in the energy of the city.
“There’s always something happening, always something going on. And it was very open and versatile.”
So when an opportunity presented itself to pursue the California dream, Andrea moved to L.A. to pursue her passion of entertainment and fashion. Not knowing where exactly she fit in with those passions but knowing she wanted something in that realm, Andrea started taking any jobs aligned with those interests. “Whether it was small or unpaid (if it fit into my vision), I took and said ‘let’s see where it goes’.” Eventually, Andrea landed in the public relations and marketing agency The Ross Group, where she first learned the ins and outs of public relations, marketing and advertising. A perfect blend between her passion for entertainment and fashion. Andrea realized this was the fit she had been searching for.
NOW, Five years later, Andrea branches out to open her own venture, The Sakura Marketing Firm, and step into her new role of owner as The Ross Group.
Of course, starting a new business, there are always challenges and Andrea says working through fear has been one of the more rewarding challenges she has had to overcome. “I’ve learned how to manage it, but for the first seven months, I was like, should I have not quit? What am I doing? So learning how to deal with those mental challenges has been the biggest challenge and learning how to leave them behind has been the most rewarding.” As Andrea expands Sakura Marketing, she gets to focus on the work that really makes her happy. Among her favorite part of Sakura is welcoming new clients and understanding their different brands. “Unraveling what they are and all that they want to become and being able to personify what that means, that’s what really interests me.” continued on page 14

Grand Performances needs to exist in the mind. And that’s something that really fits into the future with online performances and with expanding our reach globally.” “Space can be taken away in a moment,” he continues. “We’re evolving with content that makes Grand Performances a perspective - not just a place.” In addition to reconstructing Grand Performances to be a virtual space, Azul plans to reconnect new and older audiences together through a series of productions. His time as Grand Park Programs Manager from 2016 to 2019 makes him an expert in just that.

“We’re still working on a lot of things trying to bring a new perspective, how to incorporate the past and history. Grand Performances has an amazing mission that is about celebrating diversity and global programming to Los Angeles and making sure it’s free and inspiring our community.” As Los Angeles adapts to Covid-19, we are also witnessing one of the most powerful social uprisings in the last century. As an afro latino creator himself, lifting up underrepresented voices is incredibly important to Azul. Fortunately Grand Performances shares his passion for promoting underrepresented voices and that belief is already a key part of the organization’s identity. “Look back thirty years,” he says. “It’s in our archives. It’s not just something we’re saying. It’s something we’ve been doing.” Amplifying these voices has been a big inspiration for the birth of Azul’s latest project: The Heritage Square Series. Unlike anything produced by Grand Perfor-
mances before, this series is a collection of artists who will showcase their music inside historic Victorian houses in Heritage Square. The concept is about hosting these artists in spaces where they typically would have never been allowed in at the time these houses were built. “The idea came to me in a dream,” Azul says. “It’s all about reclaiming space in a positive way. It’s about stepping back into power and stepping into these places and leveling up.” The series premiered in September with artists Grace Oh performing her vibrational healing sound bath, Low Leaf who is known for combining an array of genres by playing the harp, keys, singing, and producing beats and the soul/jazz choir The Voices of Creation. ANDREA ROMERO: SAKURA MARKETING...CONTINUED Between launching her own firm and taking reigns of The Ross Group, Andrea’s busier than ever. That’s why it’s so necessary to regulate stress. “Selfcare is so important,” she says. Handling that stress with self-care and spirituality has been paramount to her success. But Andrea also stresses the importance of having a mentor. “My mentor is always my go-to. She has become a best friend, and a lot of my strength has come from her. Finding a mentor you can be honest with across the board is important.”
