BEAST OF A FEAST AT HOCK+HOOF
S
ince downtown Los Angeles is already regarded as one of the most vibrant and diverse culinary scenes in all of the country, with such a stellar line-up of unique, contemporary food establishments is there really room for another?
Y
ES!!! Husband and wife team of Kat Hu and Justin Yi opened their spectacularly successful eater Hock + Hoof raking in rave notices for their uniquely innovative take on culinary traditions from around the globe. “He’s Korean, I’m Chinese, and us growing up eating … (Asian) food and then going to cordon blue, or CIA, (both of) which teach French cooking techniques, it really made sense for us to combine the two flavors and bring something new to the restaurant scene in Los Angeles.” Hock + Hoof means to do just that. The culinary couple’s extraordinary menu selection leaves no parts unturned, baked or stewed, and the flavors are delectable. Hock + Hoof is an exploration into an entirely new dimension of taste. Beef tongue, pork jowl. If the pork cheeks aren’t filling enough, don’t worry! Hock + Hoof may be the only DTLA restaurant bar that serves the whole hog itself for about $800. They have vegetarian options as well, like Justin’s delightful take on Soman, a traditional Korean bean soup.

DTLA COCKTAIL OF THE WEEK HOCK
+HOOF
the petit pea
Soju + Lemon + Elderflower + Butterfly Pea Flower + Lemon Bitters Downtown Weekly waiting patiently as the GM of Hock + Hoof, delivered three signature cocktails at the bar to our team. The first, what looked like Hock + Hoof’s version of an Old Fashion was placed before us in a short single rock, centered by a large square of ice. Filled with the light brown Soju spirit, the process of making the drink seemed enormous. It involved wood, fire, and smoke. In the beginning sips it burned a bit when it went down, but that faded quickly and it sure did bring out the decor.
My Petit Peeve with The Petit Pea - It was so tasty and so petit it went down before the conversation about how much I enjoyed it was even over. Then I was sad. Only another cocktail of the exact same liking would bring me back up to spirits. And so it did. Up and over I must say. I watched the ice cube expose more and more of itself with every sip. While the team was burning with desire, happy, and healthy, I toggled between elation and doing everything I could not to sip out.
As an alternate to the old speakeasy lair DTLA was once famous for, Hock was more of an industrial garden, with a mix of wood, tile, plants and metal. The atmosphere for lounging at the bar was subperb with communal diners and window facing the Spring Street Strip behind us. To our far right; intimate seating, facing a backdrop of what seemed like a cascade of a thousand or so soft, calming lights. The second cocktail was uber original and could have took the title of Cocktail of the Week had it not been for the presentation of the third. Yet, this delight came topped with a granola bar. Yes, so we passed that tipsy tale straight to our graphic’s gal, because she’s health conscious. The third little “piggy” however, came my way! Purple, cute, cold and incredibly tasty. Oh the gloreh! It also seemed like a purposeful chore to undertake, with snipping, mixing, stirring and shaking, followed by the reluctant balancing of an Elderflower atop a smaller ice cube, presenting a tip of the iceberg rising from the body of this lavender bittery love pond.
Bet you can’t help yourself. The Petit Pea wins title of DTLA Cocktail of the Week because after its gone you will truly miss it.
Lechon Baboy An extravagant feast consisting of a whole juicy roasted hog with a variety of five delectable sauces, and six artfully-crafted side dishes makes Hock + Hoof a DTLA favorite for the holidays. The whole hog experience is available for pre-order by phone, serves 12 people and retails for $880. hockandhoof.com

f Jesus comes to mind, it’s okay, it is the holiday season, but we’re thinking more along the lines of A1 Bookbinding Company on 13th and Broadway. A1 Bookbinding has been binding these holy books, among others, in DTLA, the Old Craftsman’s way since 1960. Touted as Downtown’s “longest best kept secret.” A1 Bookbinding was established by husband and wife duo but currently ran by Mariana Blau. Today, Mariana works alongside Laetita who has been working at A1 for over 20 years and Margarita who has been working at A1 for over 30. Bibles, college text, instruction manuals, the list goes on with A1’s clients ranging from the Dean to the Pope.
No task is too big or too small for this dynamic trio who offer hard leather and soft covers, quarter binding, restoration, stamped titles, and so much more. A1 prides itself in putting as much attention and detail to each and every order regardless of the size of the job, giving her long list of celebrity cliental top notch results. Customers must provide the pages but have full reign over what colors, the quality of binding and types of labeling they can choose from. Plenty of options including gold leaf machine pressed labels made the good ole fashion way, with type set, letter by letter. Mariana’s trio can handle anywhere between 1 to 5,000 books with less than a a few day’s turnaround. For more information visit a1bookbinding.com
