DTLA SWEET TOOTH: BELLA FROZEN YOGURT
umans have long enjoyed yogurt dating back as far as 5000 BC. The 80s brought frozen yogurt to its peak adding fruits, chopped nuts and candy toppings to classic flavors Chocolate and French Vanilla. In the present day, frozen yogurt has become even more splendid. Tarter than ice cream and with less fat, yogurt is a friendly dairy option for many with probiotics to aid in digestion.
F
rozen Yogurt is just as popular as ice cream in Downtown and we have enjoyed at least one frozen yogurt shop in almost every district. Now the Historic Core can offer sugar-free, nonfat, gluten-free, vegan and dairy free frozen yogurt, gelato, and soft serve ice cream options thanks to Bella Frozen Yogurt on 5th and Broadway. When DTLA thinks of frozen yogurt, we think of sampling tasters, counting twirls to the top and controlling the destiny of our desired toppings. When Bella thinks frozen yogurt, she thinks, “Mom, may I have some more?” Bella Frozen Yogurt is named after the companies CEO, 2 year-old yogurt aficionado and daughter of Lina and Steve Myung, operators of Bella Frozen Yogurt. Bella is DTLA’s youngest yogurt promoter and according to young Bella, babies love it! The festival season at Pershing Square, neighboring convenient stores and foot traffic from Metro Station provide a steady stream of pedestrians, many of whom discover they can now enjoy frozen yogurt cups, floats, coffee, and espresso along the way. For them, gummy bears, chocolate chips and the cool breeze of pastels are now a reality. The store is a modest pink, dimly lit and cooled, consisting of frozen yogurt, ice cream, Gelato, espresso machine, a counter, toppings station, beverage frig, and a few matching tables that fill and empty with each wave of customers. Upon first glance, you could confuse Bella’s for a

sinners and saints
10. DTLA Sweet Tooth: Sinners and Saints Desserts DTLA-WEEKLY.COM
I
n the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. But the earth was dry and not so tasty. So God said, “Let there be sweets!”
And then there were sweets.
Cupcakes, tarts, puddings, pecan bars, cream puffs, cakes and pies, sweets became a much-needed companion to mankind. But as mankind became more knowledgeable we began to desire sweets that were just as healthy as they were delicious. While some continued on with traditional recipes others began to choose a different path. To keep mankind happy, God created Sinners and Saints Desserts and placed owners Elisa Testone and Dustin Hodges on the spiritual journey of providing decadent desserts with and without the fear of damnation.
Give in to temptation:
Sinners and Saints began making desserts the traditional way with flour, milk, eggs, and sugar after co-workers Elisa and Dustin agreed to work together late night, baking cobblers for an office party. The two have worked well together ever since making their first location one of the more popular dessert destinations for locals in Venice, California. It was these locals who inspired the Gluten-free options.
Original Sinners and Saints Venice, CA
“Customers would walk in and all they asked about was, what was gluten-free?” Elisa said. In the first year, Elisa admitted she and Dustin only knew how to make a gluten-free cupcake, a brownie, and a cookie. Then, one morning Dustin was hit with an idea that struck him like a lightning bolt. From that moment desserts made the traditional way would be marked as sinners and all gluten-free varieties would become saints. With an original concept and desserts to die for, the rest is history as the two embarked on the road to salvation for gluten-free recipes. “For every person, “healthy” means something different, for you, it’s vegetarian -- for me, it’s no sugar.” Gluten-free shares a testimony that’s easy to understand when it comes to healthy dessert options.” Said Elisa.
DTLA Sweet Tooth: Sinners and Saints Desserts by Keri Freeman Photos by Eric Epperson
Rethinking the concept was the spark the two needed
to begin redesigning the Venice location. Complete with storyboard menu, ovens, refrigeration systems, and endless supplies of batter, at first, the curious may have mistaken the black, red, and white exterior on Lincoln Blvd for an adult entertainment venue. With a leap of faith, however, upon entering they would find out just why Sinners and Saints has become a staple of Venice, where shelves filled with fresh baked goods each morning empty by closing--religiously. Fast-forward 7 years later, when owner of Poke To Go, Jeremy Ryan, first contacted the sweet duo in hopes to collab at Downtown’s new Corporation Food Hall just south of 7th and Spring. Corporation Food Hall is the answer to all foodie lover’s prayers complete with Italian, Mexican, Asian and American Cuisines. However, the Corporation didn’t offer a wide variety of desserts until now thanks to Sinners and Saints.
Sinners and Saints brings fresh baked varieties to Downtown LA from their Venice
location each day. Patrons may enjoy in-house, take out or hire the bakery for catered events. Saying Sinners and Saints is good at making gluten-free deserts is an understatement. They are very, very good at making gluten-free desserts. So good, you won’t be able to tell the difference.
If you’re a saint… seek out their popular Tres Leches (milk cake) or Tiramisu cups marked with white or red powdered sugar pitchforks, both inventive and divine treats that are GLUTEN FREE. And for sinners, (with no shame), you’ll find yourself surrounded by decadent creations made with only the best ingredients, locally sourced whenever possible. Join DTLA at Sinners and Saints Desserts inside of Corporation Food Hall, Saturday, May 20th for their GRAND OPENING and choose the sweetest path to eternity. 724 S. Spring Street. LA 90014. RSVP at sinnersandsaintsdesserts.com

She eventually created the line ugar and Spice and everything nice… That is “Sugarpuss” in 2001 after gaining experience what girls are made of. In DTLA, girls are also with the fashion business. Today, Summers is selling items from her showroom on 8th and Los Angeles in made of apparel, swim wear, dance wear, historic building erected in 1912. Like most of the bodysuits and costumes. The fashion district aoccupied floors of the fashion district, surrounded by is where they can find them, especially when they buy fellow creatives. from Sugarpuss Apparel. Seeing as though her website is making sales on a daily basis, she’s now looking for ways to scale her business even bigger. With two production houses, master seamstress, trusty assistants and rotating interns, Sugarpuss is bracing itself for a lucrative summer and an even more extensive costume season this fall. This may be sweet but it means bigger orders that will push her and her crew to the limit.
So what makes Sugarpuss so popular? Sex.
Sugarpuss is in high demand from nightclub owners, burlesque troupes, aerialists and other types of performers who aren’t shy when it comes to flaunting their curves or showing off a bit more skin. She also gains inspirations from movies like Kill Bill, and comic book heroines like Wonder Woman.
O
wner Jennifer Summers first began designing her own clothes in San Francisco after earning two Bachelor’s degrees, one in Fine Arts and one in Psychology at UC Berkeley. At 22 she had finished college earlier than most, and admittedly too young to really know what she wanted out of life, she sought out fun by traveling the world as part of the electronic dance phenomena of the 90s. Dancing alongside the others in booty shorts and platform boots the main difference between her and her dancing counterparts was that Summers was making her own clothes. No two outfits the same, she began wearing a piece she made. Most girls who saw it kept asking just where they could find it. In a time just before hip-hop clothing for women had become the new thing, in 1997 Summers had designed a puffy short vest with nighttime reflector seams that kept getting her compliments and gave her the confidence she needed to take the steps to sell her designs. Shortly after conjoining with a local hiphop merchant on Haight Street, the store would establish a section for her designs in the front window. The store kept buying and the inventory kept growing. With each purchase, Summers found herself more and more immersed in the business aspect along with design.
“Wonder Woman pays my bills,” she jokes. But not. Sugarpuss booty shorts are simply high waisted booty shorts with stars plus an original added gold trim so not to attract unwanted attention by the Wonder Woman brand, and because customers have expressed many times that Sugarpuss, in an age of cosplay, makes the most comfortable star-studded booty shorts they’ve ever worn. Other designs come in shimmering metallic, stretch velvets, and plush pastels that hug whatever portions of the body they do cover and give the wearer the look of confidence and strong sexual prowess.
Women of all ages can wear Sugarpuss.
Retailers like Dolls Kill have begun carrying the line capturing an even younger audience. Jen is also launching a swim wear line to put the final piece to the puzzle. “I want to have a new collection of swimwear every year that goes with the rest of the stuff I make with a little added of flavor to it.” For those who may have lost their summer’s bod, Sugarpuss is moving into apparel with an ever popular plaid line that’s selling overseas as far off as Australia.
What started with lingerie, followed by
bodysuits, high wasted pinup bottoms, and Costumes girls could move has snowballed into every girl can feel beautiful in. Sugarpuss Clothing is located at 817 S. Los Angeles. CA 90014. #Sugarpussclothing

Traditional Mochis of Fugetsu-Do Little Tokyo
Paris Baguette has just added the Fashion District to its list of locations around the world. This international franchise is a fast casual bakery-café founded in 1988 specializing in French-inspired goods. Here’s a unique Parisian experience with harder to cakes, juices, coffees and pastries that widen our sweet horizon, like Baguette’s Apple Bavarian Cream Pastry, Banana Pudding or Cappuccino Cakes, Acai Smoothie Bowls and Watermelon Tornado Juice. #Paris-Baguette
More time machine than dessert shop, Fugetsu-Do just may be the oldest sweet shop in DTLA, having been family owned and operated in Little Tokyo since 1903. They offer Japanese rice cakes, more commonly known as mochi and manju (sweet bean-filled rice cake), and they are easy to fill up on. Mochi has usually been eaten during festive occasions but make a perfect gift. They also gift wrap the box. 315 East First St. Los Angeles, CA 90012. fugetsu-do.com

Little Damage! Fashion District
Owner Jenny Damage uses her powers to create an ice cream fantastic. All with supernatural ingredients, Little Damage was the first to pioneer the release of activated charcoal to add mystique and aesthetic value to their soft serve ice cream. Once the idea caught on, it began a movement, with dessert shops in DTLA adding the dark gray ingredient to everything from Gelato to ice mocha. 700 S Spring St, LA, CA, 90014. #little.damage

In fact, The Dolly Llama has more toppings than any other dessert shop in the Core and when it comes to sauces and ice cream flavors you’ll be glad to know theres a wide assortment of those too. Meticulously prepared before your very eyes this dessert could double for a collectible art piece. Please note... This ice cream...It will melt if you try to collect it, just take a photo, tag #thedollyllama_la and enjoy! The Dolly Llama also offers shakes with the same “pick your own ingredients” concept and hot cups of hot cocoa, Hot-chata, Hot Chocolate or Hot Vanilla topped with marshmallows. 611 S Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA 90014. #thedollyllama_la
