First Day of 2023 Brings Oshogatsu Stops to OOTORO SUSHI in Little Tokyo

Cultural activities, entertainment, food and music are slated for Little Tokyo in DTLA, on the first day of January.

Presented by Japanese Chamber of Commerce and the Japanese Culture of Commerce Foundation, the New Year Celebration Oshogatsu will take place at Little Tokyo’s Weller Court and Japanese Village Plaza from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Oshōgatsu, is a public holiday observed in Japan marking the beginning of a new calendar year. In Japan on the eve of the new horizon, temple bells ring 108 times: 8 times to ring out the old year and 100 times to usher in the new.

Included in the Downtown Los Angeles festivities is Sake Fest, mochitmaki, a kimono fashion show, shamisen show, and Taiko drumming. Attendees who make their way to Ootoro Japanese Sushi Restaurant (just across from Weller Court on 2nd and San Pedro) will celebrate the New Year as guest at DTLAs finest sushi and sashimi restaurant helmed by iconic Sushis Chef Kun-Wu San and Chef Okabe San.

Ootoro serves timeless sashimi selects of thinly sliced Yellow Tail, Salmon, Tuna, Shrimp, Squid, Eel, Octopus, Scallops, and Sea Urchin served by a friendly and knowledgeable staff.

They also offer extravagant Bento boxes, hand-rolls, stir-fried side dishes and crispy tempuras perfect for take-out and delivery or outside seating.

For a more spirited festival, guests partake in the new cocktail program featuring the Architect of Bartenders, Mr. Erik J. Lund.

Ootoro Sushi is located across from the festivities at 232 E. 2nd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012. @ootorola

DTLA Just Got Its First Goth Bar & Restaurant and It’s Hotter Than Hell

Downtown local Dj, music and film producer Fhedesh and his partner singer song-writer Sin Savio have fans screaming about their new restaurant bar, The Veil, DTLAs only Goth Bar and Restaurant now open on the Spring Street Strip.

Located on the corner of Spring and 6th, like a scene from a classic horror film, Veil is reminiscent of that dark basement you just have to explore, praying to everything holy the door doesn’t slam shut and your candlelight doesn’t get blown out. But then, it does.

Reaching out from the darkness behind you is Fhedesh. Owner and operator of the dark fortress. Yet instead of devouring your existence, he hands you a plate of delicious shrimp fettuccine followed by a glass of blood-red vino.

As your eyes get used to the darkness, you begin to take notice of your immediate

surroundings, the room is a mini torture chamber of dining tables, goth decor, melted candle sticks, photography of graphic nature and interactive S&M displays.

Guests may find themselves tied to a vintage gurney, used in an 1800s asylum, strapped at the neck, while others dawn a repurposed coffin table while devouring plates, hot off the flames.

The speakers broadcast a supporting mix of Darkwave, Post Punk, Goth top 40, and Heavy Metal delights. Artists Sextiles, Twins Tribes and Swasta6 and music from Fhedesh’ latest album play in the background.

Partner, Sin Savio oversees the bar program at Veil which consists of select wines, Soju cocktails and domestic and imported beers.

Under the cover of darkness, The Veil extends the Goth hospitality scene with dining for those who prefer only to come out at night. Open at 9 pm Wednesday - Sunday, the Veil's kitchen stays open until 4 am, just before sun up, so as not to expose its nocturnal visitors to the harmful rays of UV Sunlight.

The kitchen stays open late with flatbread, chicken wings, waffle fries and the signature Veil Burger.

The Veil is located at 555 S Spring, LA Ca 90013. @theveildtla

Eight. Welcome to Pangea at the Ace Hotel

Wondering if Douglas Fairbanks and Charlie Chaplin ever thought their Spanish Goth-style house of Vaudeville would end up ringing in the New Year someday with a room full of celebrating modern-day rump shakers.

It may not look like much now, but back in the day events at UA were deemed the most dazzling in Downtown Los Angeles History.

Although dances have supercharged over the years, the overall rebellious nature of the UA, now operated by Ace Hotel seems to have managed to survive upon which the two great rebels surely would have consented.

This New Year’s Eve the Ace welcomes Afrobeats, Reggaeton and Hip-hop brought by Pangea Sound with Dj Falcons, Supernova, Sleepy Joe, and Joaquin to control the crowded dance floor while VIP tickets offer access to the Theatre’s Mezzanine with top-shelf open bar canapés and bubbly from 9pm – 11pm.
