opinion: 101 Ways to Die in dtla
101 ways to die in dtla
O
f course, the odds of you having the time of your life in downtown Los Angeles far outweigh these random incidents, but stay aware and with regard for your own safety, like in any other major urban metropolis, there are 101 Ways to Die in Downtown LA.
Death from Above On October 21st an unidentified man apparently jumped or was pushed from the rooftop of the Rosslyn Hotel in the Historic Core. As with anyone who plunges from 5 stories or above to the hard concrete below, death is certain, but for this particular jumper, the scene was more gruesome than most, if that’s at all possible. Seems the man hit one of the Historic Core’s vintage lamppost, shattering the glass on the way down, and possibly severing his body in half, as witnesses say his torso looked as if it was completely separated from the rest of his body. We won’t mention what the head looked like. There are no words because there was no longer what could be described as a head, just a splatter of clumps and an ever-growing puddle of blood that drained from the sidewalk to the gutter below. Unfortunately, this jumper is not the first to use gravity and pavement to end their own life in Downtown, and they most certainly won’t be the last. In March of this year, a construction worker plummeted from the 53rd floor of the Wilshire Grand construction site in the Financial District landing on a moving car, with a driver in it. Although this time the innocent bystander wasn’t injured, no one can say where or when the next jumper will come crashing down, and there are no guarantees, one of those miserable blokes won’t fall on you. To avoid the grim reaper in this situation, always remember to walk as close to the bastions as possible, (also a good tip during earthquakes), and keep your eyes open when you see crowds of people forming around you. If they are looking up towards the rooftops gasping in horror, there is probably a good reason.
Business as Usual On September 14th, a man was found hanging from an apparent suicide at a local wine and beer bar in the Historic Core. The bar, who’s owner was rumored to be semi-crass, cold and with a darker sense of humor, decided it may have been a good idea to reopen almost
immediately after the man had been cut down and taken away by the coroner. The aftermath led to an explosion of criticism on social media and other media outlets, condemning the shopkeeper for what many deemed heartless behavior and unethical business practices in a quest to make a quick buck. Most demanded to know how finding his favored employee cold and lifeless would not have made the shopkeeper more uneasy, at least enough to close down for the rest of the day. Surprisingly, the shop had enjoyed positive reviews on social media before the incident happened, due in part to the shopkeeper’s unwavering tenacity when it came to service, selection of stock and demeanor when it came to employee conduct. Now, a month later, for the shop, it’s business as usual. Guess this incident was not so unprecedented or shocking as it would have seemed. DTLA can be very cold to some of its dearly departed. With Downtown having the 2nd highest population of homeless people in the country, many of which die from crime, suicide or natural elements on the streets of Downtown, every year, there are seldom tales of bars, streets, hotels or restaurants closing because of nearby deaths. The streets don’t often close for long periods of time when there are fatal accidents, nor do hotels when people are found decomposing in their water tanks. For those who thought this incident being so widely pronounced by social media as atrocious would become the catalyst downtown needed to put a spark to its morality while plucking away at its heartstrings, it didn’t. Instead maybe looked at as more of a personal attempt to get back at a shopkeeper rumored to treat some of the people he came across like fodder. Maybe, to keep in tradition with the usual local barkeep mourning procedures, this bar would have only had to close for the rest of the day and eventually host a memorial party for the young lad, with ever more self-destructive patrons, who with every drink, were willing to fall deeper and deeper into liver, brain, heart disease and other physiological damage; all at the bars profit of course. Damned if you do? To avoid giving up the ghost in this situation, be sure to choose your anti-depressants carefully, and maybe not use alcohol or your last job’s ceiling beam as your only cure all.
Voices From Beyond On April 2nd on 7th and Olive, an 83-year-old man was brutally beaten, only later to die from his injuries by a transient who attacked him outside a popular marketplace in South Park, of all places. Witnesses told police, the attacker, a middle aged man, who was obviously mentally ill, chased the man from inside the market place to the sidewalk across the street, where he pushed him down and began punching, kicking and stomping the victims head, leaving the elderly man in a pool of his own blood. It wasn’t until the market place security guard tackled the killer; pepper sprayed him and held him until the police arrived that the vicious attack came to a halt. The reason for the attack, as stated by the attacker himself was, “Koreans have been raping me.” WTF? Just what was going through the head of the assailant will never be known for sure, but the man seems to share a similar trait among some other transients who walk the streets of Downtown. Hearing voices. The list of attacks being reported on social media groups involving Downtown and mentally ill persons are staggering, and no one knows when the next encounter will occur, it could happen anywhere, like the attack on a young child outside of a popular museum in just months before, or an even more recent attempt by a local transient to stomp some poor ladies pooch, and so on and so on. One good way to avoid taking a dirt nap because of some crazed transients wishes is to definitely avoid those who seem to be hearing voices from beyond and the popular social media solution, stocking up on a good supply of pepper spray.

DAVID SALLE @THE BROAD MUSUEM Artist David Salle will be in conversation with
writer Hilton Als on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. as the next program in the museum’s popular Un-Private Collection series. The pair will discuss Salle’s new book HOW TO SEE: Looking, Talking, and Thinking about Art, among other topics. The Broad launched The Un-Private Collection series in September 2013, before the museum opened, to present public conversations with cultural leaders and influential contemporary artists in the Broad collection. The Broad collection includes many key works by Salle, spanning more than three decades. “It’s wonderful to be able to bring together two significant cultural voices to discuss David’s work and his new book HOW TO SEE ,” said Ed Patuto, director of audience engagement at The Broad. “Salle holds a special place in the Broad collection and is just one of the many painters of his generation represented in depth. The Broads have been collecting his dramatic and mysterious paintings since 1981. Hilton Als is a leading cultural critic in New York
and nationally. His distinctive writing in his two-plus decades at The New Yorker, and previously, at The Village Voice, have covered a phenomenal range of topics from art exhibitions to Beyonce. river song quintet @redcat REDCAT, CalArts’ downtown center for con-
temporary arts, presents a spellbinding and poignant double bill of multidisciplinary performance from The River Song Quintet, poet David Baker and video artist Miwa Matreyek, Friday, October 28, 2016 at 8:30 pm. The evening features deeply resonant collaborations between L.A.’s River Song Quintet and award-winning poet David Baker, and video artist Miwa Matreyek, followed by a performance of Matreyek’s signature solo piece This World Made Itself, which seamlessly merges projected kaleidoscopic vistas with intricate shadow theater enacted by the artist herself. River Song and Baker offer three iterations of music composed by guitarist Gregory Uhlmann in combination with lyrical text by the poet: a semi-improvised interplay of guitar and spoken word; a six-movement art song setting of poems by Baker; and a reading of Scavenger Loop—Baker’s eco-poetic Midwestern elegy—with a score performed by the quintet featuring an elegiac narrative for the composer’s mother, Martha Baker, who died in 2013. 631 W 2nd St, Los Angeles, CA 90012.

F you haven’t yet heard of The Boulet Brothers here’s a crash course. And we do mean crash and die, but only if you are willing to be reborn into something fabulous. Okay, ready? Let’s go! The Boulet Brothers are throwing a Halloween party at the Globe Theater, October 29th, and there is little doubt it will be transforming, for you and for them, because one night with the Boulet Brothers, whether you’re gay, straight or whatever is a chance to ascend from the norm, beyond the outer realms of your own inhibitions. Stemming from New York’s underground gay scene the two single-handedly bridged the gap between what was ordinary and what is now, extraordinary when it comes to the art of Drag in Los Angeles. Hot, fierce, dripping with freedom of expression and a great sense of humor, Dracmorda Boulet and Swanthula Boulet quickly went from throwing shows at Miss Kitty’s in Santa Monica to hosting them, taking DRAG performance parties to the next level, gaining a huge following and making hundreds of cameos in the night; dressed and looking almost identical except for their difference in height. Queens of makeup, they are unapologetically gay, with mannerisms easily switching from fun-loving rolling eyes, with slurring girly tones, to fierce incensed divas. Together they are complete with the innate ability to move, react, and present the perfect makeup illusions and creative costuming they have become so famous for. Following them leads to the “darkest parts of DRAG, challenging the notions of masculinity, beauty, and individuality forcing you to face your fears and leaving you longing for a taste of their poly-sexual debauchery. In recent months the two have brought their variety shows Dragula and Queen Kong to some of downtown’s more popular gay bars, where there are no rules and no limits those influenced by the two hyper-sexual dance club costume queens. The Globe Theater is located at 740 S Broadway, 90014.

Pirate Party at Far Bar October 27-31st Yo, Ho, Ho and shimmer me timbers, it’s a pirates life, and drink for me! From the day I was shanghaied I’ve been thinking about docking the shores of Downtown’s Far East, and there is no better place to lay my anchor than at one of Little Tokyo’s best kept secrets, the Far Bar. Think gypsies, sea witches, wenches and rock hard peg legs this Halloween, because the Far Bar has a fat booty of whiskey and even more treasures of Tequilas, Black Magic Rum and Stolen Rum, for Sake’s sake. Better yet, cooks prepare sea creatures to your delight, raw, along with a full menu, and cocktail bribes from Captain Hook for anyone wearing pirate gear. The dining patio, complete with narrow alley beneath string lights and brick-laden
with the largest selection of bottled craft beers from Japan in Southern California. Thirty-four bottles of beer on the wall to be exact. Okay, they are really on tap, but that doesn’t have to stop you from using the libations to join your fellow pirates in a few rounds of sea shanties, until you just can’t, count…no more.
Zombie Crawl October 29th Only those into necrophilia can really appreciate the efforts girls will put into making their zombie costumes this year. Not only do they want to look scary but they also want to look sexy. See in life, some hot chicks are hotter than most, but in order to be a sexy zombie they’re going to have to perfect the art of dressing down to drew up, and they won’t be able to rely on the usual Maybeline/Cover Girl Clean Makeup routine. We suggest using theatrical makeup. They’ll also need some skimpy clothing, blood, paint, scissors, prosthetics, fake limbs, rotting teeth, brains, and a whole day and night supply of zombie attitude. But don’t worry zombie girls just don’t drink blood, they also enjoy great beers, and thanks to the Downtown LA Zombie Crawl, they’ll have over 10 bars to choose from, with drink discounts, free shots, and free entry to participating Halloween after parties. Nothing is going to stop them from getting their man, or woman, and just because they may not be able to run, they are zombies, they are persistent. You may get away from one but you probably won’t make it in the end, because their zombie beauty is contagious and they won’t be alone, there will be hundreds of fellow zombie babes walking dead down the streets of downtown Los Angeles. It’s going to be epidemic. 347 E 1st Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
Carrera de los Muertos 5K Run november 1st If being a part of the walking dead appeals to you, then being a part of the running dead is going to really get your heart pumping, we hope. Carrera de los Muertos is a vibrant 5k run that honors Day of the Dead. And why not run down the streets
of Downtown past the LA River through Chinatown all the way to Olvera Street? It starts at 8am, so wake up, get out and experience this cultural event full of art, music and folklore. Benefiting OSMAF to preserve traditions that have thrived at Olvera Street for over 85 years.
Bloodsucker’s Bash October 29th It’s always fun when you party inside of one of Downtown’s most popular historic theaters, and this particular theater host angels and demons as part of its spectacular Art Deco/European Goth décor, just perfect for Halloween. In it’s original heyday, the United Artists Theater, was the staple of the motion picture industry, showcasing some of America’s timeless classics when it opened in December of 1927. Later it served as a cathedral. Now owned and operated by the ACE HOTELS, the United Artist Theater, boast one of Downtown’s most frequented live entertainment venues, hosting everything from film, to live musical performances, to discotheques. The boutique hotel offers 11 floors with 182 rooms, a ground floor restaurant bar, rooftop pool lounge with fire pit ambiance and views of the Downtown skyline. The top of the hotel peaks with terra-cotta jagged edges, resembling Bram Stoker’s famed novel, where he describes Count Dracula’s castle for sure, being terrifying, and just spooky. Well, maybe not so spooky with a full house of traveling guests, but turn all the lights out and imagine Nosferatu’s twisted, clawed and fanged body creeping through the halls and you start to get the idea. Better yet, don’t imagine, the Theater at the Ace Hotel will be showing the original classic, F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent flick Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror set to the sounds of the LA Opera, just before their Annual Bloodsucker’s Bash kicks off. Thirsty for more? Bloodsucker’s Bash promises to have the highest concentration of vampires of any Downtown Halloween party, keeping you up most of the night with a fresh mix of dark red cocktails and special guests Djs. If you happen to want to dress like something besides a creature of the night, say a virtuous victim perhaps, you can always dress like Charlie Chaplin, and he was once the owner of the place, soon to be known as Vampire CC. 929 S Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90015.

three Carrie is also the film that arguably launched Brian De Palma’s career as it was his first commercial success. Some of his later films include Scarface, The Untouchables, Casualties of War and Mission: Impossible. Carrie is also the film that launched De Palma’s first marriage. He met Nancy Allen on the set. They married in 1979 and worked together on the films Dressed to Kill and Blowout. That wasn’t the only marriage Carrie was responsible for. De Palma’s friend, Steven Spielberg would often visit the set. It was there that Spielberg met Amy Irving and they remained a couple until 1989.

sissy spacek casted as carrie High school is scary enough as it is. Your hormones are raging. Your parents just have no clue. Your teachers are mean. You have to find a way to pass your algebra test. One of your friends is talking about you behind your back. You want a date with your crush of the week. You want to have whatever gadget is trending right now that everyone else seems to own. Now imagine that you are the most unpopular girl in the class with no friends at all. The teachers really are mean to you. The principal doesn’t even know your name. And your parent really doesn’t have a clue. In fact, your mother is such a religious fanatic that she regularly locks you in a closet to pray. She has also neglected to tell you about the birds and the bees. In a nightmare for any teenage girl, you get your first period while in the shower after gym class. While you think you’re dying, your classmates laugh and throw tampons at you.

BE AFRAID..BE VERY AFRAID!
Libra Like Jig Saw, you want life to be pleasant and for your days to pass by smoothly but you hold on to your feelings when people do things that upset you. Balance and fairness are important to you and its hard not to be judgmental dear Libra. Good thing the new moon makes this a great time for turning over a new leaf. Why not take a break from the crowd and relax in the comforts and familiarity of home, maybe invite some old friends over to play a new game? Scorpio To say you are strong-willed is an understatement dear Scorpio. Determination is your middle name. Like Michael Myers, you like masking your true feelings, have a dark side, and are probably obsessed with death. The Sun in your horoscope on October 28, will boost your inner power, focus, and full expression of your unique personality. Plus, it’s your birthday month, why not have a party? Surely, your family will just die when they see you. Sagittarius It’s almost supernatural how quiet and still you can be dear Sagittarius. Yet when you do speak others may be amazed at how intelligent and interesting your conversations and worldly knowledge may be. Like Regan, sometimes you let others tie you down. There’s a flow of positive energy from the new moon that’s ideal for self promotion. Plus, there will be plenty of guests over this season and you don’t want to miss a chance to offer them your special welcome. Capricorn Wow Capricorn your ambition is unmatched. No one will ever get away with joking around about something that is meaningful to you. Like Chucky, you come off like the “Good Guy” but you can be callous and cold and dislike embarrassment. Good thing the solar eclipse will mark a positive turn around. This will boost your self-confidence and make it easier to forge ahead and accomplish your goals. But why not just be content with your current situation without all the meticulous planning and ritualistic preparation? Aquarius You are the true definition of a nonconformist dear Aquarian, and enjoy acting even more outrageous when people tell you what not to do. You love attention and you’re not afraid to take risks. Like Hannibal Lecter, you are hard to understand and barely understand yourself, you change so often. You think rules are for other people, and feel the need for a lot of freedom, as you bore easily. However, a series of excellent cosmic transits means that you have a great opportunity to get on top of any challenge. Having guests for dinner? You’re sure to offer them unique dishes that only a person your caliber can prepare. Pisces Water signs like you dear Pisces are easily led and are very kindhearted, but you must be careful not to let others take advantage of you. Although you may not want to handle your own affairs like Jason, your mommie may not always be there to take care of you. These days however the stars will have a harmonious influence on all of your relationships. They will also help clear away any obstacles to progress, and can even bring support and assistance from those in positions of power and authority. Somethings will still be up to you however to give the Axe to or take a swing at.
Aries Ever wonder why it’s always about “me, me, me”, dear Aries? While your best friend may be choking on a cranberry you could be still be going on and on, not even noticing they are having a problem. Like Dracula, my dear ram, you can be a bit self-absorbed. And the temper tantrums, really? Unfortunately, the sun doesn’t shine in your favor this week. Things that normally don’t bother you will get under your skin. Your instinct will be to react quickly and go on the attack but you will have to bite your tongue and show restraint. If you feel too much anger building then find a way to release it though flying, digging, or maybe even sex. Taurus Like Frankenstein’s monster you can’t always ignore the harsher realities of life although there’s nothing wrong with spending your days relaxing under a shade tree smelling the flowers while others work their lives away…Just know you may attract an angry mob of people determined to convince you to do otherwise. With Mercury in retrograde drama and tension in your relationships are on the horizon. It will be your love life that most strongly feels the pressure but your basic instincts will provide a solution and still allow you time for love, art, and music. Gemini Like Norman Bates, you are two people in one at time, and can become easily annoyed and cranky when your minds get frazzled. You’re quick minded and can think and talk about several subjects at once. This can be confusing to other people as it is hard to be sure which subject you are talking about. This weeks parties or relaxing, love relationship, and money matters should all go well. The new moon fell within your solar transit, so these pleasant conditions will carry on at least until the new year. Cancer You maybe a bit too nurturing dear Cancer especially if someone ever hurts someone you care for. Sort of like Kayako Saeki in the Grudge, you will never let them “live” it down, taunting them relentlessly and holding on to your anger may lead to unpredictable mood swings but after the solar eclipse things will flow more smoothly in all areas of life, with fewer obstacles ahead. Take a hot bath, and wait it out when things get you down, instead of worrying and driving everyone who cares about to the brink of suicide. Leo Just like Freddy Krueger, you love to make a grand entrance and you love drama dear Leo. And you love to throw a party, but is it really for your guests or just so you can show off shiny new toys or room full of new furniture? And when it comes to making a fashion statement, well you’re one of the best at it. Just remember others have their own dreams and that you’re not the only person in the world that matters. With the new moon comes even more new goodies including the creativity, energy and self-confidence that will get you through any arguments or challenges with authorities. Oh and STAY AWAKE or you’ll miss even more important cosmic influences.
Virgo Like Carrie, you’re the perfect hypochondriac and often claim an array of health problems when it’s usually just the bodies natural processes underway. Also dear Virgo you may vent way too much about the things other people need to do, instead of just doing them yourself. But with the lovely solar eclipse and a new moon, it’s all good news this week as you will be able to project your thoughts strongly and clearly, without upsetting or hurting anyone.

LIFE AFTER KOBE
THIS WEEK IN SPORTS by christopher floch
T
he Los Angeles Lakers are getting back to basketball, on to forging a new legacy under the guidance of new Head Coach Luke Walton. Purple and Gold are looking to rebound from their worst season ever. Last year, the Los Angeles Lakers record was a pitiful 17-65. The former Laker inherits a team rich in youth and potential; the 2016 season tips off Wednesday night against the Houston Rockets at Staples Center at 7:30 p.m.
Laker’scoach luke walton Now that Kobe Bryant has retired, the Purple and Gold are led by Point Guard D’Angelo Russell. The NO. 2 picks brief career has been interrupted by bouts of immaturity, but he had a terrific pre-season and has emerged as the face of the franchise. The Lakers also have rookie
Brandon Ingram. A 6’9 Small Forward who needs to bulk up in the weight room, he possesses a silky smooth jump shot, and the wingspan of a Condor. Other Lakers include Jordan Clarkson, Forward Julius Randle and Center Timofy Mosgov, who was signed in the off season. Coach Walton quickly shot to the top of the Lakers wish list, in part, because of his impressive stint as Interim Head Coach of the then NBA Champs, the Golden State Warriors. While Warriors Head Coach Steve Kerr recovered from back surgery, his record was a stunning 39-4. “We’re going to play a brand of basketball the L.A. fans will appreciate, were going to compete,” he exclaimed. He is energetic, well-liked players coach who connects with his young core, and allows them to run freely up the court. Lakers Nation hasn’t been this excited for a new coach since the arrival of Phil Jackson. The real work lies ahead, so fans will need to show some patience while the team rebuilds into the juggernaut franchise were accustomed to seeing win NBA titles.
