There are so many different types of fruit that it’s easy to lose track. That is why The Greenery, as one of Europe’s leading producers and marketers of fruit and vegetables, has provided this brochure, so that retailers have a useful orientation tool to hand when picking their way through the wide selection of products available in the fruit market. Clearly broken down into individual product groups, the Fruit Compass shows the availability of each product during the course of the year, together with an overview of its origins and the types on offer.

Our organisation maintains very close contact with our foreign growers and suppliers of imported products. These close relationships promote the quality of the products and food safety. Thus products grown in foreign cultivation are produced in accordance with extremely strict guidelines which are applied equally at home and abroad. Years of cooperation and guidance in cultivation ensure that our foreign partners also meet the high quality standards of the growers in the Netherlands.

Quality and Environmental Protection

Melons Although botanically speaking melons are vegetables, they are used as fruit and are classified as such. Watermelons with their high water content are a delicious source of refreshment. They are now also available without seeds, thanks to new cross-breeds. The flesh of the honeydew melon is relatively flavoursome and very sweet.

All partner growers are carefully selected. Only those who meet specific criteria are permitted to supply The Greenery. In addition, great value is placed in maintaining direct contact with the growers. The Greenery’s “Quality and Environmental Protection” department has a team of agronomists. These specialists in plant cultivation travel to the producer countries, maintain a dialogue with the growers and oversee the cultivation of the products. Even before the harvest, the quality of the products is checked in test laboratories. Further checks take place on delivery.

12

53

Obst-Kompass en.indd, Druckbogen 13 von 32 - Seiten (52, 13) 25.05.2007 11:13 Uhr

Product Innovations The Greenery leads with continual product innovation and variation. This is illustrated in the apple market, for example, by the new types Rubens® and Junami®. Working with the company “Inova Fruit” of which The Greenery is a co-founder, consumer preferences are researched, then corresponding products are developed and successfully placed in the market. Even before they are ever grown, the end consumer target groups for each product have already been clearly defined. Which grower will produce which types and in which manner is equally planned in advance and a clear outline of how the product will be marketed is also sketched out.

Pears Since pears have little acid, their taste is sweet to very sweet. Even so, they have hardly any more calories than apples which are not as sweet, simply because they have a higher fruit acid content. Consumed in larger quantities, pears are primarily a source of vitamin B. They also contain a high level of minerals such as calcium, potassium and phosphor, making pears an important food.

Special Ripeness Concept Because fruit tastes best when it is ripe, The Greenery has developed a special ripeness concept. This concept ensures that a given product reaches the consumer at a stage of optimum ripeness, ready to eat, and doesn’t need to ripen in the consumer’s fruit bowl.

Varied Involvement The Greenery is involved in many different areas. For example, the organisation supports the new Chair of “Product Freshness” at the Dutch University of Wageningen for research into ripening and ageing processes in fruit and vegetables. In addition, support is also provided to projects for improving product quality, for promoting integrated cultivation and for optimising logistical systems.

Fruit and vegetable consumption is increasing. This is due, on the one hand, to increased awareness of health issues amongst consumers and, on the other, to the success of health campaigns which have been promoting the proven health benefits of increased consumption of fruit and vegetables. Worldwide studies show that those who eat lots of fruit and vegetables over the long term are less often ill. That is why doctors and nutritionists recommend that we should eat a handful of fruit five times a day. Whatever is being served, there is hardly another food with

Citrus fruit The collective term for oranges, mandarins, grapefruit, lemons, limes and all other fruit of the numerous types of citrus. These are subtropical fruits whose juicy flesh is enclosed in a white inner and a coloured outer casing. Numerous crossings of the various citrus fruits have created a wide diversity of retail products.

so many nutrients as fruit. Fruit contains a wealth of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients but relatively few calories.

Sophisticated Logistics Ripe vegetables contain the most nutrients at the moment they are harvested. That is why the time between harvesting and consumption needs to be kept short by using as direct a supply path as possible. This is where The Greenery applies sophisticated logistics – every day, around the clock. Starting from the most up-to-date distribution centres in the Netherlands the company supplies the European market with a fleet of over 200 vehicles.

Soft fruit from The Greenery is grown predominantly in the Netherlands. Once known as “summer fruit”, berries are now also available outside this season. Strawberries, for example, are produced by The Greenery in greenhouses with appropriate lighting. This process means that the product can be cultivated all year round. Overall, The Greenery offers a broad palette of all kinds of soft fruit of best quality and flavour.

Staying Fresh Many of the partner growers have their own chilling facilities.

Soft fruit Soft fruit generally refers to berries. Ripe soft fruit is sensitive and cannot tolerate either wide fluctuations of temperature or long periods of storage. This is why only domestically harvested products are available. Berries are sweet, aromatic and rich in vitamins.

Thanks to refrigerated vehicles which pick up all products directly from the grower, long interim storage or breaks in chilling are avoided. The transport personnel are also extremely familiar with sensitive types of fruit and their knowledge is continually refreshed and expanded. Once the produce has arrived at The Greenery’s large storage facilities, it is chilled further before it is graded and packed by equally specialised personnel.

52

13

Obst-Kompass en.indd, Druckbogen 12 von 32 - Seiten (12, 53) 25.05.2007 11:13 Uhr
