Talking to... ROBERT NEWMAN

by Rich Lee On Thursday 25th September, Robert Newman’s critically acclaimed New Theory of Evolution show returns to Aldershot’s West End Centre. Rich Lee caught up with the comic to discuss taking back Darwin and giant, floating slugs...

Your successful 2006 stage show, the History of Oil, explored geopolitics and the looming threat of peak oil. With your New Theory of Evolution, how do you manage to make such dense and serious subjects funny? I think the difficult thing is to get laughs out of the usual stale, trite fare. When you tackle complexity then there is a wealth of detail, oodles of oddity which lend themselves to comedy. And natural history is so full of freaky facts, such as the communities of social amoeba that come together in times of food shortage to form a giant slug which then turns into a sticky bit which then releases a balloon that flies to where there is more food, which, in their case, is decaying bark full of bacteria… Do you think contemporary comedians could be doing more to address important issues? The great pity is that they do. They address important issues from a deplorably reactionary point of view.

Robert Newman performs his ‘New Theory of Evolution’ show at The West End Centre on Thursday 25th September. Tickets available from the box office at www.3.hants.gov.uk/westendcentre. Visit www.robnewman.com for more Newman news.

Does your New Theory of Evolution have a specific target in mind? The show is, on one level, an anti-Dawkins polemic. One plank of my New Theory of Evolution is that there’s as much cooperation as competition in nature. Darwin thought so too. But Darwin’s theory of evolution has been hijacked by a reductive ideology that has left people with a narrow, pessimistic view of human nature and of society. There’s a strong Vaudevillian aesthetic that weaves through much of your image and material. Where does your affinity for that particular era come from? Yes, the show has got a few Victorian references, or at least late nineteenth century ones. There’s Darwin of course, and a bit set in the 1880s about the Russian geologist Prince Kropotkin -a dead ringer for the singer from Fleet Foxes- who escaped from a Tsarist prison and wrote Mutual Aid a Factor In Evolution. You play a mean ukulele. Ever thought of becoming a musical recording artist? As Joe Strummer once said, ‘Know Your Limits.’

The Tour of Britain is in its 11th year – and it’s the first time that a stage has been held in Camberley. Here’s all the info you could possibly need… Cycling in the UK is a very big deal – and cycling events don’t come much bigger than The Tour of Britain. I think we all know who he is… Once the race departs Park Street in Camberley at 10am, the riders will fly through Surrey Heath, visiting Heatherside, Deepcut, Frimley Green and Mytchett before leaving the borough.

But that will not be all, as you shall find out over the next page, with Actively Camberley getting underway… Please keep your eye out for street closures and cycle routes – and be sure to give those guys a big cheer as they set off… For more info, visit www.tourofbritain.co.uk.

Welcome to As community radio pioneers Kane FM 103.7 begin broadcasting from their new home at the University of Surrey’s Student Union this month, we spoke to Mr Fame himself, Ian Handy, about his station’s journey from pirate crew to the latest kids on campus…

K

ane FM’s roots reach back to the late 1980s but truly began life as pirate radio station N Joi FM in the late 90s, broadcasting out of a tiny garden shed in Guildford. In 2011 they were awarded legal status as a not-for-profit community radio station, one of only three pirate stations in the UK to be approved by regulators Ofcom. Since then Kane FM 103.7 has been broadcasting independent, underground bass music to Surrey and Hampshire while gaining a devoted following far beyond the borders of those two

counties. “You can’t go anywhere in the country where someone hasn’t heard of Kane FM,” says Director Ian Handy, aka Mr Fame, with pride.

P

rior to the station’s relocation, Kane FM had been operating out of property owned by the Lockwood Centre in Slyfield, Guildford. But when the premises began to fall short of the station’s requirements, an opportunity presented itself from an idea hatched between Ian and the University of Surrey’s Student Union CEO, Alan Sutherland.

Centre have made to Kane FM, they have been the most incredible allies and friends to us and without them Kane FM wouldn’t be here today. But this new move lifts everybody involved with the project. We’ve gone from a shed, to a glorified shed to a real building with a shiny new studio, professionally built with everything we’ve learnt, on a campus surrounded by

“I’ve known Alan for over fifteen years,” explains Ian. “He had an itch he wanted to scratch and he came to check out the project which had been going for just over two years. He wanted the Union and Kane FM to connect directly, to give young people a megaphone with which to speak their voice. We asked, ‘how could this University on the Hill connect with the community and young people?’ “We can’t understate the contribution that the Lockwood

B

ut what of the Union’s current student station? Stag Radio was one of the first student radio stations to be given a license over forty years ago, so it was important for both parties to establish Kane FM as an independent station on the campus. “We’re really pleased

that Kane FM are coming to the University; it’s a natural fit,” says Alan Sutherland. “But Kane FM and Stag Radio are two very different things. We know they’ll co-exist and we’ll have students get involved with both. They’ll rub along very well together.”

I

n their new home, Ian plans to continue Kane FM’s commitment to serving the community, particularly youth. “We have over 150 volunteers so we’re one of the largest voluntary organisations in Surrey, although we don’t shout about that much. Last year twenty-two kids from all sorts of backgrounds passed through Kane FM, where they have the opportunity to get a certificate from the Arts Awards

with as many young people as possible and make sure music is represented fairly across the FM spectrum. We don’t just serve Guildford; we serve a music community, people who like independent music, who are slightly against the grain. We represent the little guy.”

the new opportunities the location offers. “We’d already installed a live connection between the Rubix club and Kane FM studio, so this will mean far more live broadcasts from the venue in future with more big label events. We hope it would also mean people coming from outside to visit the Union, which has traditionally been quite a closed campus.”

Mum’s the word Thinking About University? It may be a jolly good laugh while you’re there, but applying is arguably the tough bit. Here, independent education consultant Liz Kirk gives some tips… If you’re thinking about going to university in 2015 and are just about to start Year 13, there a few things you’ll need to do this term. If you’re applying to any course at Oxford or Cambridge and for all Veterinary Medicine/ Science, Dentistry or Medicine courses, you’ll need to be a tad more organised and have your application into UCAS by 15th October 2014.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

For all applicants, think about what you want to study at university. Where do your passions and expertise lie? Once this is decided, which universities offer the right sort of courses for you…? The content and structure of a course Just because you like cats doesn’t mean you should be a vet. Would you like it each year? Or does your interest fade the further into it you get?

Core and optional modules What would you have to study and do you like the options? Or does ‘Understanding Governance’ make you shudder?

Opportunities to study abroad Think about how this could benefit your future and career, not just about how much fun it would be…

Reputation of each university Check the league table ranking, and more importantly graduate prospects and student satisfaction with the course you might apply to do. Look at unistats.com!

Visit university open days Go to as many as possible. Be sure to check out your department, and ask lots of questions about the course; refrain from simply looking up local bars.

Distance from home and transport links Could you get back home easily? Do you want to be able to?

How you will be assessed at each stage of the course

Think about first year accommodation

Are you better at exams? Perhaps don’t go for a heavily coursework based choice.

Do people stay on campus at weekends or go home? Where would be a good location? Some university campuses are deserted at the weekends…

Check out what needs to be completed before and during your application Will there be additional entry tests or submitted work? Will you be interviewed?

Start working on your Personal Statement early Check out on relevant university websites what they want to read from applicants. Your interests and experiences may well be of interest; your views on Justin Bieber, not so much.

What interests you now, why, and what do you want to learn more about, are just some of the points that are good to include If you aren’t sure what to write, do ask for advice! And that goes for all of the above too – if you are unsure about anything, be sure to ask. It’s a big decision…

FAMILY

Following on from these things to consider, start building up a crib sheet of why you want to study your chosen course at university, and why you think you would be the right applicant for a university to select. What interests you now, why, and what do you want to learn more about, are just some of the points that are good to include - if you aren’t sure what to write, do ask for advice! And that goes for all of the above too – if you are unsure about anything, be sure to ask. It’s a big decision…

The day will include an exhibition about the history of the Church and its architect W. D. Caroe.

Going way back in time now – a few thousand years, in fact. Bill Hill in Bracknell was the site of a Bronze Age burial mound, so there’s a macabre twist to this fascinating site. Led by the Parks and Countryside Ranger who manages this area of Bracknell Forest, this is a great opportunity to find out more about a historically fascinating and naturally gorgeous area.

Our History:

Horses, Harlots and Emeralds There can be no doubt that the Royal Military College Sandhurst is a local bastion to be proud of. Many officers have marched to and from its gates, some into history some into obscurity. But let’s talk about just one of the college’s more colourful alumni. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Prince Francis of Teck.

B

orn in January 1870, Francis was the second son of the Duke of Teck and brother of Queen Mary, George V’s wifeto-be. With a name straight out of the announcements page of The Times, Francis Joseph Leopold Frederick was actually known as known as Frank. As nice and as normal as that sounds, the poor guy was labelled “His Serene Highness Prince Francis of Teck” at birth. Frank was born at Kensington Palace, booted off to Wellington College and then onto the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. Now this is where old Frank starts to get a little bit fruitier because Frank, bless his cottons, was a gambler. One can only imagine the sort of bets someone who has literally money falling out of his skyrocket can place; someone like Frank. This finally led to him running up a £10,000 debt on the horses. To put that into a bit of context, £10,000 in the late 1800s is around £1.1million. Just let that little figure sink in. Makes your scratch card habit at the local shop pale into insignificance, doesn’t it? Not only that, Frank could barely keep it in his pants and, as a consequence, his family insisted he sort it out. So they sent him to pursue his military career in India rather than, say,

at Tru night club in Camberley (great foam parties by the way). Now far be it from me to accuse guys who have trouble resisting the urge to “churn butter” of having commitment issues but as such Frankie never married. He did have girls throw themselves at him though, including none other than Maud of Wales. Maud was his sister’s sister-in-law. The two exchanged letters but it became apparent to Maud that Frank wasn’t really up to … well, you know. By the way, being of blue blood she went on to marry her first cousin Prince Carl of Denmark, which worked out well as she became the Queen of Norway in 1905. Win.

Consider that his sister May is now Queen Mary, she had some clout so what she did was had Francis’s will sealed by a court. Next she negotiated with Lady Kilmorey (Ellen) to buy back the emeralds, reportedly paying her £10,000 for them. So basically between that and the cheeky punts on the horses, Frank got the family some £2million in debt in today’s money. And if it wasn’t for my muckraking he would have been one of those alumni who did disappear into obscurity. ¬

Frank’s real passion, after the horses, was his long standing affair with society beauty Ellen Constance. Frank got pneumonia on a trip up to Balmoral and died but not before he left a will leaving the family’s prize Jewels, The Cambridge Emeralds, to her. Frank’s sister May was well put out by her silly brother A) getting p****d all the time B) running up huge debts on horses and now finally leaving their family heirlooms to some harlot, so she set out to recover the family jewels.

Spice up y September is a notoriously fickle month; only time will tell if we’ll be toasting an Indian summer or plugging in the slow cooker. In these uncertain times I take comfort in the guaranteed heat provided by something nice and spicy. Of course if we do get lucky and the sun continues to shine just pop the chops on the BBQ and serve with couscous and some cooling yogurt.

Quick cOcOnut curry Serves 2

IngredIents 

2 spring onions

1/2 red chilli 2 inch piece of ginger, peeled and roughly chopped

1 clove of garlic

Juice of 1 lime

A large bunch of coriander

Stir fry oil

50g creamed coconut

100g raw jumbo king prawns

2tbsp frozen peas

6 cherry tomatoes

G2GWB_RECIPES.indd 1

MetHOd 1. Blend the spring onions, chilli, ginger, garlic, lime juice, coconut and coriander stalks together in a food processor to form a rough paste. 2. Heat 1tsp of stir fry oil in a non stick frying pan, add the paste and stir fry on a medium heat for 3 minutes. 3. Add 200ml of boiling water and simmer for 5 minutes before adding the frozen prawns and cherry tomatoes. Once the prawns have turned pink add the frozen peas and roughly chopped coriander leaves. 4. Serve with ribbon noodles or rice, although this also works very well with the sweet potato mash (sounds odd but give it a go!)

WHERE TO EAT:

Victory Chop House, Farnborough

By Rich Lee In the short amount of time that Farnborough’s De Vere Village Urban resort has been open for business, it has arguably become one of the most vibrant hubs of activity in the town. In the short amount of time that Farnborough’s De Vere Village Urban resort has been open for business, it has arguably become one of the most vibrant hubs of activity in the town. It’s not hard to understand why. With the top notch Victory pub; a lush spa and state-of-the-art gym; modern, comfy hotel suites; excellent business and conference facilities; bespoke tailored events and regular entertainments, The De Vere Village has something for everyone; the whole striking the perfect balance between accessibility and style. And it’s the Victory Chop House restaurant that delivers those two particular qualities in spades. Walk through the resort’s main entrance and hang a left and you’ll arrive at what might possibly be one of the slickest dining rooms that Farnborough has yet seen. Deep greens against dark woods and black tile, long leather banquettes and snug, intimate corners, twinkling glassware and gleaming counters; no expense has been spared and it shows. This is after a recent refurbishment that has seen the dining room refined alongside the new menu; with the experienced eyes of new manager Rohit and veteran chef Satish, they have achieved the tricky feat of focussing the menu while broadening it. So while the Chop House’s signature appeal of great meat cooked

over their impressive open pit barbecue remains, there are more international influences such as curries, pastas and Asian dishes to appeal to wider tastes. Despite the high-end surroundings, the Chop House is unashamedly a family-friendly restaurant, with plenty of fun choices such as a classically appealing Prawn Cocktail, which we had to start, along with an excellent dish of bread-crumbed Somerset Brie, lightly fried until crisp on the outside and oozing in the middle, all sat atop a fruity apricot sauce. For mains we decided to head straight for what they are best known for: the Grill. And so a special of ‘Texan’ T-bone steak arrived, cooked to a perfect medium rare blush; the meat absolutely sang from a zingy citrus marinade and a herby hit from a drizzle of tarragon sauce lifted this steak to something quite special. Across from this, an almost intimidating rack of meaty ribs proved a gloriously messy indulgence, with a lovely sweet, smoky sauce. Desserts brought a warming salted Banoffee Peanut Crumble that was an early hug of autumn to come and a deeply decadent Dark Chocolate and Orange tart. With some serious skills in the kitchen and a friendly welcome on the floor, the Chop House might be one of the best new additions to Rushmoor dining

for some time and could set the bar for other restaurants that may emerge as Farnborough continues to redefine itself as a serious destination in the years ahead. HAIR REVIEW: Glo Hair Salon in Camberley

By Carla Thomson

I entered for my appointment with Sam at 12:30pm and was warmly welcomed, led to my chair and offered a drink. Despite Glo being the only salon in Surrey Heath that offers a licensed bar, I had a water although I was tempted with hair of the dog and crack on with a spirit, I was well-behaved and stuck to the h2o. The salon is sleek and chic full of jet black large mirrors; there’s a contemporary yet luxurious feel to the whole place. In these surroundings I had a consultation at my seat and asked what I would like done. Well, I went through all of my fringe-related panics - which Sam totally understood! This was not easy when I hadn’t had it cut for a couple of months, but she really listened to my concerns. Once the chat was over, I was then taken through to a separate room. This was lovely - dimmed lighting, candles and a soothing fish tank, topped off with a massage chair! Once

seated Sam asked me to take two deep breaths and relax; as she gently held her hands above my face, I began to inhale the tea tree oil she had on them… and it really worked! Next, whilst Sam was lathering up the shampoo, I was given tips on washing techniques – apparently a squeeze of lemon in with the first rinse helps add shine...I’ll be giving that a go! Once washed, I was treated to a lush head massage. Once the cut began, I was being constantly informed of what was happening - Sam told me what she was doing, what products she was using and why. As a large Kerastase stockist, Glo use a lot of their products; for me they used the Keratase Forme Fatale (a brushing volumiser), the Elixir Ultime and the Cris Tal Liste. She got my fringe spot on told me to come back at any point for a trim, and once she was finished I was given some samples of the aforementioned products which I thought was a really nice touch. Overall I was really impressed with the Glo Salon experience.

Sam gives the glo treatment With the amount of hairdressers in Camberley, it can’t be easy taking the plunge and opening an independent venue - but I think after the experience I’ve had, they’ll do just fine…

Talking to...KAREN WHELAN CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF SURREY HEATH BOROUGH COUNCIL

this region, where we’re known as a ‘step-up town’. We’re aiming to take Camberley into the top 100 retail destinations in the UK.

What would you say already makes Camberley a unique place? We have some fantastic independent traders in the High Street already and if you look beyond the facades there is some fantastic Victorian architecture there as well, so we have the opportunity to bring the traditional in line with the modern. We’re a very clean, very green and very safe borough so we want to create a very family oriented economy - we already have a great evening economy.

What brought you to work in local government? I’ve been in local government for thirty years. I’ve worked for two London boroughs and two districts. I’ve been with local authorities that have been providers and others that have been enablers, but now local authorities are businesses in the true sense of the word. I’ve been CEO at Surrey Heath for four years this October and I’ve absolutely enjoyed being here for those years, mainly because I think there is huge potential for growth that we can exploit in Surrey Heath.

What has been your proudest achievement as CEO of Surrey Heath Borough Council? I think without a doubt it’s been being able to deliver very high quality services without having to cut any. In 2010 we embarked on rejuvenating Camberley town centre and we’re now in the position where we have publicised the Camberley Town Centre Vision: a £300million investment in the town centre over the next

fifteen years giving us 230,000 sq. ft. of new retail space. By 2018, we hope to have a new Camberley town centre.

What will be the first phase of the Camberley Town Centre Vision? One of our first priorities is to redevelop the London Road frontage. So where the Allders Building stands, all of that block will be turned into 230,000ft. of retail space. There’s also the land east of Knoll Road where there are proposals for a new library, a new conference centre and bistro. We’re also looking to make much of the town centre more pedestrian-friendly.

What elements of the Vision plan has you most excited? What excites me about it is that the more we look at the plans the more we can see that it is achievable. Being the type of person I am I probably would like to see it done as quickly as possible. The plan for the town centre has the most potential for growth in

What are you doing to support businesses in Surrey Heath? We’re very proud of our Open for Business initiative and working with a number of companies in the area to help them develop and grow. Small businesses matter greatly to us. This year we held our first Surrey Heath Business Awards and a number of the awards were given to SMEs. When people are struggling we try to work with them as part of our Open for Business and using planning policy sensitively to help them grow.

What are the main challenges facing Surrey Heath? Being a small council, survival will be one of our main challenges. Where some local authorities are playing a waiting game, Surrey Heath is going for growth. To survive we have to adapt the way in which we deliver services. But that’s what’s so great about the job; it doesn’t stand still. I’ve been doing this for a long time and every day I learn something new. The day I stop learning will be the day I let somebody else do the job!

New Rates As any small business knows too well, owning property is usually the biggest financial burden they face. Despite having struggled through the recent recession, those that have survived still have to balance operating costs against often oppressive overheads. Such is business, same as it ever was. But new business rate relief initiatives devised by the Government last year are being introduced by Rushmoor Borough Council, giving small, local businesses the opportunity to save money where it can make the most difference: property.

TO BRING RELIEF TO LO

The Small Business Rate Relief aims to relax rates for companies who fall under a rateable value of £18,000. In the 2013 Autumn Statement, the government announced a year’s grace for businesses that take on additional property which would make them ineligible for small business relief. Fifty per cent business rates discount are to be offered to ratepayers setting up a business in Aldershot or Farnborough with a rateable value of less than £50,000 as part of their re-occupation relief policy. Providing the premises remains continuously occupied, the discount can be claimed over an 18-month period between

Th

1 April 2014 and 31 March 2016. The initiative extends to retail business who can apply for a business rate discount of £1,000 for shops and food premises with a rateable value below £50,000. Rushmoor Borough Council is able to decide when to award the grant relief, which is reimbursed in full by the government. In Rushmoor, there are 85 properties that have been vacant for more than 12 months and that meet the criteria necessary to qualify for the discount. The premises must previously have been used as retail to qualify for the relief.

Work on The Meads in Farnborough continues apace as the shopping centre nears completion. The Meads is at the forefront of the town’s regeneration and will offer up to 20,000 sq. ft. of smart, modern office space alongside retail and leisure facilities. A fantastic new addition to Farnborough’s entertainment offerings is also taking shape in the form of a spangly new Vue Cinema that

A second retail relief scheme will provide immediate financial support and a relief of up to £1,000 a year, for two years, to existing and new town centre retailers. This will apply to small and medium businesses with a rateable value of less than £50,000 such as some shops, restaurants and cafes. The premises must be used as retail premises to qualify for the relief. “We are very supportive of initiatives like these that support our small businesses and our town centre retailers,” said Councillor Adam Jackman, Cabinet Member for Concessions and Community at Rushmoor

Borough Council. “We know that times are tough and we hope that both schemes will help to attract new businesses to Aldershot and Farnborough and contribute to our town centre regeneration plans, while supporting the local economy. More than 300 local businesses have taken up a discount so far and we would encourage others to get in touch.” Further information about the schemes is available by contacting the council’s business rates billing and collection team on

looks set to open its doors right in time for Christmas. With such exciting new developments in store for Farnborough, the town is well on its way to becoming the great destination it always should have been.

What is a Rateable Value? Apart from those properties that are exempt from rates, each non-domestic property has a rateable value. The rateable value broadly represents the annual rent the property could have been let for on the open market on a particular date, on full repairing and insuring terms. For the current rating lists, this date was set as 1 April 2008. The income from all non-domestic rates is paid into a national pool and redistributed between local authorities in proportion to their adult population. Domestic properties are subject to council tax. Rates are assessed by the Valuation Office Agency, an executive agency of HM Revenue & Customs responsible for assessing rateable values that are the basis for working out rates bills. Business Profile

projectfive

projectfive are an IT Support Company based in Camberley – and yet they couldn’t be further away from what you imagine. We chatted to Managing Director Steve Coburn to find out what makes them different… IT Support is a stressful business to work in: a steady stream of (understandably) fraught computer-users, calling you to ask what’s wrong. “No computer phones up and says “I don’t work” – it’s only people” says Steve Coburn. “Therefore we consider ourselves a people business, not an IT business.” This is not necessarily a view you’d stereotype with IT. Perhaps it’s Steve’s rather varied background that’s shaped his opinions. After leaving education, he played volleyball for a year in St Tropez, and then returned home to become a leisure centre duty manager. He then became a weatherman – as you do… While working in marketing for some global powerhouses, he inadvertently found his calling. “The company asked everyone in marketing why they weren’t calling IT support, and they all said “we ask Steve”. They came over to me and asked if I wanted a job in IT – I said “no”. They came back and said “we can double your salary. Do you want a job in IT?” - I said “… yes.” This rather left-field career path ultimately led to the creation of projectfive. Starting out as a data recovery service after the Enron fallout, they are now a hugely successful outsourcing company, growing 50% each year for several years. Clients range from the Professional Services industry to local tourist landmarks such as The Watts Gallery in Guildford, The Lightbox in Woking and Farnham Maltings. So why are projectfive such a success? Well aside from boasting a highly talented team, they have a very outward-focussed ethos. Steve says “There’s a quote by Simon Sinek:

“People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do what you do”. Everything we do is

based around three goals: to help people, to make friends, and to stand out.” And he means it; sitting on the boards for Collectively Camberley, Surrey Chambers of Commerce and the local branch of the IOD, he certainly makes the effort with people including his own staff. projectfive’s office is far from a shed full of broken PC’s – there’s lots of space, music throughout, a pool table, break-out areas, soft seating; all designed to help staff relax when they’re dealing with stressed out people whose computers aren’t working. It’s fair to say that projectfive are a fantastic example of the capabilities of a 21st century company – their people, clients and fellow businesses would certainly agree… On the second Friday of each month, Projectfive host networking badminton at Lightwater Leisure Centre.

‘Me’

Nick ‘Headhunter’ Chapman MIXED MARTIAL ARTIST LIFE ENTHUSIAST BUSINESSMAN

LOCA L P E O P L E , E X T R AO R DI N A RY L I VE S .

What do you do?

What does your free time consist of?

I’m a professional mixed martial artist, which is crudely known as a cage fighter (which I resent) and I run and own the Fight Science network.

I don’t get much of it! I will make time every so often to go out for a meal when I can, but if I’m training for a fight I won’t be going out. I’m in bed by 9. Training, training, training. I’ve wasted a lot of time in my life and I don’t intend to waste a second more. I have no intentions of slowing down or stopping, my only intention is progression. Best things about the job?

How did you get into Mixed Martial Arts? It was a natural progression - I grew up angry and aggressive and I was a thug for many years, fighting policeman, doorman, anybody; I just had this urge. If you’re born a certain way, you just have to accept it. For some reason I was born with a tendency towards violence and anger. MMA came along and my eyes lit up...

Occupational Hazards?

I just love life and how my life is. I’ve put myself in the middle and built everything around me…resources, networks, training, coaches, business I just love it!

There’s lots, but none that I’d say are significant enough for me not to love what I do. I’m rife with injuries… I could struggle to walk by the time I’m 60. My knees and ankles are shot, but hey - I love it. It feels wrong if I wake up without pain – it’s reassurance that I’m doing something right.

Are you working on any other interesting projects at the moment?

Your toughest bout?

For more information on Nick Chapman, visit www.nickheadhunterchapman.co.uk. For more on Fight Science, visit www.fightscience.co.uk. or visit the Fight Science Team at

It was a guy called David Zetolofsky. I had only had a few months training. I had no fitness or technique and I had a couple of fights with guys with experience and steam-rolled them. Then I came across Zetolofsky - he was beating me for the first few minutes and I learnt a lot about the sport. It didn’t hurt; I loved it. It took everything I had to come back and finish him in the second round - it was an awesome feeling.

Yes always. I’ve just opened up new Fight Science Gyms in Leeds and Staines and there’s more to come. Watch this space.
