Backyard Biofuel T

he unprecedented winter rainfall might finally be beginning to subside but evidence of the battering our county took during the storms over Christmas and the New Year remains in the form of innumerable fallen trees. As council’s and private firms scurry to remove the worst of the damage, one forestry company has found a use for the wood that offers a tantalising glimpse at an environmentally friendly source of local fuel.

Go on Garden Safari in Horsell! Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th June - 11.00am to 5.00pm (12.00pm start on Sunday)

Redwood Tree Services has been operating for over 27 years and is owned and run by Nick Rose and partner Tina James. At Nick’s yard in Chertsey, 40 - 50 tonnes of timber just from the winter storms alone lie in neat, towering stacks waiting for the chipper. “We fall into the void between agriculture and forestry,” says Nick. “Because in theory what we’re actually doing is removing a waste product from someone’s property. To forestry, this is a by-product that can be resold but in arboreal terms it’s just ‘waste’.” Just over eight years ago, Nick and his company were canny enough to realise the potential of the woodchips as a by-product to use as biomass fuel. When logs or branch wood are reduced to chippings they can be used in power stations to produce electricity and domestic houses for heating. To reduce the carbon footprint of the process even further, Nick uses Aspen alkylate petrol which is produced using surplus gasses left over from crude oil processing. The liquid (alkylate) fuel is the purest extractable petroleum product available and runs small engines, such as those used by foresters like Redwood Tree Services, far more efficiently than regular unleaded petrol and contains virtually none of the hydrocarbons and benzene. This makes it less harmful for machine operators and a lot cleaner for the environment. “Everybody needs to do their bit,” says Nick. “One of the purposes of doing this is to prove that you don’t need to have a big carbon footprint to recycle wood.” Some of the biomass Redwood produces goes to power boilers at the Berkshire College of Agriculture in Maidenhead but with the Government’s imminent Renewable Heat Incentive scheme, domestic users and businesses will be supported in installing woodchip boilers in their own properties. Those that do could significantly benefit from a cheap and sustainable source of heating. As for the fuel itself, they’d need look no further than Redwood Tree Services to keep their home fires burning. For more info visit www.redwoodtreeservices. co.uk or call 01483 481175 and for information about the Renewable Heat Incentive visit www.energysavingtrust.org.uk

hether you’re a keen gardener already or are simply in need of inspiration, the village of Horsell throws open the garden gates this June with their unmissable annual Garden Safari. Now in its 12th year, the event sees some 30 residences around the village make their gardens available for the roaming public to enjoy. And being almost midsummer, these lovingly tended and unique gardens will all be at their blooming best! It’s an ideal weekend to meet other likeminded, amateur horticulturists who take real pride in their borders and beds, and to gather ideas for your own. How will you know which gardens are open? Look for the balloon outside! There will also be plants available to buy at various gardens and an open studio which will have handmade glass on show. Tickets – or Event Passports - cost £7.00 and can be obtained from Needle and Thread and the Spar in Horsell High Street, Lisa Jones, and all participating gardens. All funds raised go towards the refurbishment of Horsell Village Hall.

Ready to sell? Here’s a little help from us

1. The first impression is paramount. Make sure the front garden is neat, the bins aren’t out, the front door doesn’t look scruffy and the entrance hall is clear. 2. Make the most of your property’s WOW factor. If the best feature is the master bedroom, make it masterly. If it’s the kitchen, let it shine. Your Estate Agent will probably start with the best, so make the most of it and wow them from the word go. 3. Give them your parking space. If

you’ve only got one parking space on your driveway leave it for the viewer. It’s more welcoming and they’ll appreciate the gesture.

S

elling a home is never easy, but fortunately Director of Seymour’s Estate Agency in Guildford and Burpham, Paul Rickard, is on hand with ten tips to prepare for that allimportant viewing…

4. Put away the clutter. Tuck away the toys, washing and all the bits and pieces you live with daily. Nothing says a messy mind like a messy house. 5. Make sure it’s cosy. Nobody

likes a cold house so make sure the heating is on and the atmosphere is hospitable.

6. If it’s a project, let it be a project. If your whole property needs doing up, leave it to the DIY-ers. There’s no point in wasting money doing one room up if the whole house needs work. People love projects, so leave it to them. 7. Take the dogs out. Even animal lovers probably don’t want to be

greeted by the odour of wet dog, or have their jeans paw-marked the minute they enter the house. So take a walk and let the viewers imagine their own pets wandering the halls. If you’re not in, they may also find it easier to imagine it’s theirs.

8. Make the most of the garden. Mow the lawn, tidy the pots and show the garden off to it’s full potential. A pretty garden may just win buyers over. 9. Cleanliness is keen. Although we are only human, and in reality humans make mess, no one wants to see someone else’s make up smudged on the mirror. Clean the bathroom, make sure the kitchen is pristine, clean your plate and don’t let viewers be put off by an unmade bed. 10. It’s all about the little things. Open the curtains, let the light shine in and ventilate the house so it smells fresh and clean. You don’t have to pretend you don’t live there but the viewers are interested in the house, not in you, so put away clutter-some personal belongings and welcome your viewers to their new home.
