A TRANSFORMATIVE HIGHLANDER TERM EXPERIENCE

We are excited to introduce Freshman Foundations, a dynamic and immersive experience that every ninth-grade student at Gunn will participate in as part of Highlander Term. This program is a core part of the freshman-year journey at Gunn, designed to set students up for success both in high school and beyond. Through Freshman Foundations, students will engage deeply with the Gunn Pillar. Over the course of this unique experience, students will explore the four Gunn Pillars: Learning Yourself and How to Learn, Innovation and Risk-taking, Sense of Rootedness and Place, and Public Character and Active Citizenship — all of which are key to shaping their personal growth and academic success.

This intentionally currated experience ensures that every freshman has the opportunity to build a strong foundation for their time at Gunn, while also fostering connections, self-discovery, and a sense of purpose.

WHAT IS FRESHMAN FOUNDATIONS?

Freshman Foundations is more than just a program — it’s a transformative journey where students will spend two days fully immersed in each of the four Gunn Pillars. Through experiential learning, hands-on activities, and thoughtful reflection, students will explore what these values mean to them personally and how they can use these principles to shape their path forward at Gunn and beyond.

THE LASTING IMPACT OF FRESHMAN FOUNDATIONS

Freshman Foundations is designed to help ninth-graders make a meaningful transition into high school by connecting them to the Gunn community and values. By participating in this experience, students will develop critical life skills, such as self-awareness, collaboration, and resilience, that will serve them throughout their academic and personal lives. This program also emphasizes active citizenship, encouraging students to engage with the world around them and make a positive impact.

The program is all about experiential learning — students will have the chance to learn by doing, which research shows is one of the most effective ways to deeply understand and internalize new concepts. By the end of this journey, students will have gained a deeper understanding of themselves, their peers, and the world, preparing them to take on future challenges with confidence and purpose.

EXPERIENCE THE PILLARS IN ACTION

Each pillar is brought to life through dynamic and meaningful activities:

Sense of Rootedness and Place: Students will embark on a field trip to a nature preserve where they will hike, learn the process of making maple syrup, and engage in a thoughtfully curated program that explores connections to the land. They will also visit the Institute for American Indian Studies to deepen their understanding of place and heritage.

Learning Yourself and How to Learn: To help students better understand who they are and how they learn, they will participate in a variety of activities. These include a visit to a rock climbing facility where they’ll explore perseverance, vision board creation to set personal goals, and a daylong program with experts from Little Flower Yoga, designed to help them identify their personal needs and goals.

Public Character and Active Citizenship: Through a program run by Cool Speaks, students will reflect on their values and what it means to be an active citizen. They will then apply what they’ve learned by participating in a local community service project, putting their ideas into action.

Innovation and Risk-taking: Students will visit the Eli Whitney Museum to take part in a hands-on challenge that demonstrates the principles of innovation. They will also participate in a program designed by Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) to learn about the entrepreneurial mindset and how Risk-taking can lead to new opportunities.

GET READY FOR ADVENTURE AND DISCOVERY

Freshman Foundations is an unforgettable experience where learning comes to life. It’s a chance for students to step outside of the traditional classroom and immerse themselves in activities that are fun, engaging, and deeply meaningful. They will form stronger connections with their peers, discover more about themselves, and gain the tools they need to succeed not just at Gunn, but in life. This is an adventure that will challenge them to grow, reflect, and take ownership of their journey in high school.

We can’t wait to see the impact Freshman Foundations will have on this year’s ninth-grade class!
