09.22–06.23
A MESSAGE FROM SIR MARK ELDER
We are delighted to welcome you to the Hallé’s first full Bridgewater Hall season in three years. Everyone on stage has been overjoyed to see so many of you returning over the past months to share in music-making again. We hope those of you still to come back to us will be tempted by some of the extraordinary works we will perform for you. I will conduct Richard Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben in October, a glorious showpiece for the orchestra. There are few pieces that have such an impact on audiences as Verdi’s astonishing Requiem. The power and originality of the piece always lingers in the memory, so I do hope you will join us for what is sure to be a special performance with a wonderful cast of singers. Before Christmas I will conduct a concert featuring both Wagner and Tchaikovsky. Wagner’s beautiful Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde sits perfectly with my own selection from Tchaikovsky’s wonderful ballet, The Sleeping Beauty. I am thrilled to welcome back Nicola Benedetti in January, when she will perform a twentieth-century tour de force in Szymanowski’s Second Violin Concerto, which sits alongside 2 ≥ 2022–23 CONCERT SEASON
Brahms’s inspirational Second Symphony. In March we are delighted to welcome Augustin Hadelich to play Brahms’s grand, Romantic Violin Concerto. The same concert will feature the first public performance of Huw Watkins’s Symphony No.2, commissioned by the Hallé. This is a particular delight for me, following our premiere of his First Symphony which was so widely acclaimed. I hope you will join me in extending a warm welcome to the many wonderful guest artists throughout the season. Daniele Rustioni, Tabita Berglund, Maxime Pascal and Christian Reif all make welcome returns and we’re thrilled to see Taavi Oramo, Kerem Hasan, Alpesh Chauhan, Marta Gardolińska, Corinna Niemeyer, Dalia Stasevska and Kevin John Edusei in Manchester, who make their Hallé debuts. From within the Hallé family, the Hallé’s Assistant Conductor Delyana Lazarova presents a programme which includes a piece by our Artist in Residence Dobrinka Tabakova and Hallé Choir Director Matthew Hamilton conducts Messiah with a stellar cast. Our season will end with a celebration of the great oratorios of Edward Elgar. Each of these choral masterpieces holds a special place in my heart. I am so pleased that our audiences have become so fond of and familiar with this great composer’s music, and these three works, performed only a week apart, will showcase this English genius. These are only some of the highlights in a remarkable season. Please take a few moments to look through your brochure and discover many more. Whatever you choose, and whether you are hearing our music for the first time or the hundredth, you will be made very welcome.
Sir Mark Elder, Music Director ≥ 2022–23 CONCERT SEASON 3
A MESSAGE FROM DAVID BUTCHER
This is the first time since I joined the Hallé back in 2020 that we’ve been able to introduce a full season of events following over two turbulent and disruptive years. The fact that the Hallé has emerged in such great shape, with its pioneering spirit refreshed and renewed, is thanks to the continued generosity of its loyal funders and, crucially, to the extraordinary levels of encouragement and support shown by our audiences. We are therefore thrilled to present to you an action-packed 2022–23 season featuring a rich and diverse mix of music and artists with programmes that we hope will delight, inspire, illuminate and surprise. We welcome some of the world’s greatest musicians to Manchester including Ian Bostridge, Alice Coote, Steven Isserlis, Pavel Kolesnikov and Sheku Kanneh-Mason. Great works by Beethoven, Elgar and Shostakovich sit alongside less familiar gems by Barber, Berg and Farrenc and, in the spirit of our eponymous founder, we premiere new works by Sofia Gubaidulina, Huw Watkins, Ryan Wigglesworth and our Artist in Residence for this season – Dobrinka Tabakova. Dobrinka’s beautiful and evocative 4 ≥ 2022–23 CONCERT SEASON
music has been heard in concert halls, theatres and dance houses around the world, as well as in film and television. Her music and programming also feature in our newly-expanded lunchtime Chamber Series set in the glorious surroundings of Hallé St Peter’s. Our Pops concerts, brilliantly led by Stephen Bell, are more wide-ranging than ever, and include special events featuring a video game music concert with big screen as well as a screening of E.T. with the Hallé performing John Williams’ score. A huge thank you must go to the many supporters who have enabled us to adventure so boldly in presenting these concerts, in particular to our enlightened major sponsors: Siemens, PZ Cussons, Brother, CMS, Circular 1 Health and Edwardian Hotels. The vital core support of Arts Council England, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Manchester City Council also enables us to deliver a vibrant education and ensembles programme across Greater Manchester and beyond. Finally, it’s worth re-iterating the inspirational role of our Music Director, Sir Mark Elder, now in his penultimate season, with all the vision and spirit to take this orchestra to even greater heights. In the flurry of five star reviews last season, I was particularly struck by The Spectator’s comment that ‘… no British orchestra can match the Hallé under Mark Elder. This is what peak performance sounds like, and it takes decades to achieve. Savour it while you can’. On behalf of the Hallé, I hope you will savour our new season to the full and enjoy feasting on its many musical delights.
David Butcher, Chief Executive

TCHAIKOVSKY’S PATHÉTIQUE Ravel La Valse Dobrinka Tabakova artist in residence Concerto for Cello and Strings Tchaikovsky Symphony No.6, ‘Pathétique’
12' 20' 46'
Delyana Lazarova conductor • Guy Johnston cello A dazzling up-beat to the season, Ravel’s La Valse evokes, he said, ‘an Imperial court ballroom peopled with a whirling crowd.’ On the podium is the orchestra’s Bulgarian Assistant Conductor, Delyana Lazarova, winner of the inaugural Siemens Hallé International Conductors Competition. Delyana introduces the Hallé’s Artist in Residence, her compatriot, but Britishbased Dobrinka Tabakova, whose music has been described as sweeping up the listener with its ‘abundant power’ (The Strad). Her compositions will be heard in different contexts across the season, beginning with her vibrant Concerto for Cello and Strings, which journeys through turbulence and longing before ending in pure radiance. It’s performed by Guy Johnston, renowned for his advocacy of living composers. Tchaikovsky’s ‘Pathétique’ embraces a first movement of raw emotions, a teasing waltz, barnstorming march and tragic slow finale. It is widely regarded as his greatest symphonic achievement. Written for the virtuoso Friedrich Ramm, Mozart’s charming Oboe Quartet will allow Stéphane’s beautiful sound to fill the building while Farrenc’s Nonet, which was premiered triumphantly in 1850, marking the zenith of her composing career, will unite the strings and winds of the Hallé in this delightful work. 39' 40'
Sir Mark Elder conductor • Pavel Kolesnikov piano ‘The chemistry between the Hallé and its music director bristles with spontaneity and colour,’ was the recent verdict of The Spectator. Whenever they make music together something special occurs – clearly Sir Mark Elder’s visits are not to be missed! Smetana’s portrayal of the river Vltava is a work Sir Mark ‘adores’, particularly for its depiction of its bubbling source, which will be exquisitely conveyed by the Hallé’s flautists. Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto is both fiendishly virtuosic and laden with his characteristic ardent, late-romantic lyricism. It will be performed by Siberian pianist Pavel Kolesnikov an artist, with whom Sir Mark has been keen to collaborate. Richard Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life) is, for him ‘a deeply affecting work’, a Hallé party-piece, full of orchestral solos that players and audiences love. 6.30pm in the auditorium - free to concert ticket holders Sir Mark and Pavel Kolesnikov in conversation about tonight’s concert.

Taavi Oramo conductor • Tami Pohjola violin The two young artists making their Hallé debuts in this concert have been establishing formidable reputations in their native Finland. Taavi Oramo is tipped in the press to be ‘the next young Finnish conductor to rise to international acclaim.’ (Helsinki Sanomat), whilst Tami Pohjola was the first prize winner of the 2019 International Dinu Lipatti Violin Competition. Opening each half are lyrical overtures by near contemporaries Fanny Mendelssohn and Louise Farrenc, both displaying the talents of these gifted early-Romantic composers. Sibelius’s haunting opening to his Violin Concerto calls to mind chill Scandinavian landscapes, whereas Mendelssohn’s Fourth Symphony is imbued with the sunshine and warmth of Italy where it was begun. Sir Mark Elder conductor Natalya Romaniw soprano • Alice Coote mezzo-soprano Thomas Atkins tenor • James Platt bass Hallé Choir choral director matthew hamilton Verdi is totally in Sir Mark’s blood; he’s conducted his music more than any other composer and has loved the Requiem since childhood. It was composed in memory of Alessandro Manzoni, writer and humanist, whom Verdi admired and hoped to emulate through his music what Manzoni had achieved for Italian literature. The Requiem was initially controversial because of Verdi’s overt operatic approach to a sacred text, as he responded to every nuance of the words; for instance, in the spine-chilling ‘Dies irae,’ the limpid beauty of the ‘Lacrimosa,’ and the thrilling double-fugue of the ‘Sanctus.’ It’s a technically demanding tour de force, but together with the superb Hallé Choir, Sir Mark has assembled a stellar line up of soloists familiar to Hallé audiences, to perform what he describes as ‘this so powerful, deeply felt work.’ Tickets (including fees) from £15.50 to £46 [price range 1]

Kerem Hasan conductor • Amy Yule flute The young British conductor, Kerem Hasan, appearing with the Hallé for the first time, has established his credentials in opera (Welsh National Opera and Glyndebourne) and as Chief Conductor of the Tiroler Symphonieorchester-Innsbruck. Making her concerto debut with the orchestra, the Hallé’s own Amy Yule plays Mozart’s elegant First Flute Concerto. It follows a dramatic symphonic poem, Andromède, by Augusta Holmès. Of French-Irish descent, she was determined to succeed as a composer despite the odds stacked against her in late-19th century Paris: ‘I must show the males what I’m made of’, she declared, and she did just that! Described by Rimsky-Korsakov as an ‘Oriental narrative of fairy-tale wonders,’ Scheherazade conjures the spirit of the Arabian 1,001 Nights, couched in iridescent instrumental colours, with a solo violin representing the heroine herself. Clemens Schuldt conductor • Mariam Batsashvili piano Following his success conducting the Hallé in Hull, the young German, Clemens Schuldt, returns for his Bridgewater Hall debut. It’s a first time visit too for Georgian Mariam Batsashvili, now established in the UK as a former BBC New Generation Artist. She plays Mozart’s abundantly melodious Piano Concerto No.20, remarkably absent from Hallé concerts for over two decades. NIELSEN’S WIND QUINTET Programme includes: Nielsen Wind Quintet featuring
Amy Yule flute • Stéphane Rancourt oboe Sergio Castelló López clarinet It’s been said that Nielsen’s relish for the timbres of wind instruments arose from his love of nature and interest in human character, which helped shape his Wind Quintet. Composed for friends, the members of the Copenhagen Wind Quintet, he crafted each part to suit each player’s character, both as a person and performer. So fine is Nielsen’s idiomatic writing for the instruments, that the quintet rapidly established itself as a 20th century classic. 17' 13' 50'
Sir Mark Elder conductor Theatricality is at the heart of this concert, beginning with the Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde, a reminder that among Sir Mark’s many legacies as the Hallé’s Music Director have been acclaimed concert performances and recordings of Wagner’s operas. Barber’s ballet was composed as a showcase for American modern dancer, Martha Graham; later the composer created Medea’s Meditation and Dance of Vengeance, a substantial extract, for the concert hall. Sir Mark is excited to be conducting it with the orchestra for the first time, feeling too that Hallé audiences will enjoy this arresting score. Tchaikovsky’s imagination was on fire when composing The Sleeping Beauty: for this performance Sir Mark has made a personal selection from the glorious score, including such iconic items as the Act 1 Waltz and Rose Adagio. At this appearance he’s joined by the doyen of cellists, Steven Isserlis, who, making a much-anticipated return to the orchestra, plays Elgar’s great concerto. Autumnal in mood, it’s his threnody for a world destroyed by the Great War. Thought lost, the score was discovered in the British Library in 2020 which led to its revival, again in Worcester, 122 years later. Sir Mark Elder conductor • Nicola Benedetti violin Fresh from her portrayal of the critically acclaimed Wynton Marsalis Violin Concerto last season, Nicola Benedetti, arguably one of the most sought-after violinists of her generation, joins forces with Sir Mark to explore the lesser-known Second Violin Concerto of Szymanowski. It’s infused with Polish folk music from the Tatra mountains, which Szymanowski said was ‘the discovery of one’s own jewels’ when he encountered it. Of the same generation, Respighi and Szymanowski were both master orchestrators, hence the former’s ‘exquisite and so colourful’ evocations of Roman fountains at different times of the day makes the perfect companion. After the interval, Sir Mark continues his explorations of Brahms’s symphonies while following in the composer’s footsteps by performing his Second Symphony with a smaller string section, emulating the composer’s quest for transparency of sound. 6.30pm in the auditorium - free to concert ticket holders Q&A with members of the Hallé’s string section. He has a keen affinity with Shostakovich, receiving rave reviews for his performances, as noted in The Spectator – ‘Chauhan drove the score with a brooding, purposeful intensity’, which augurs well for his Hallé debut when he conducts the Tenth Symphony. Believed by many to be Shostakovich’s finest, it includes a savage portrayal of the then recently deceased Stalin and an uplifting finale pervaded by his musical monogram with the initials of his name blazing out. In the first half, former recipient of the Terence Judd-Hallé Award, Elisabeth Brauß plays Grieg’s evergreen Piano Concerto, a work that enchanted Tchaikovsky who enthused, ‘What charm, what inimitable and rich musical imagery.’ Tickets (including fees) from £15.50 to £46 [price range 1]

With the UK premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina’s The Wrath of God, the Hallé follows up celebrating her 90th birthday last season. Dedicated to ‘The Great Beethoven’, this brass-dominated work was described enthusiastically by the Wiener Zeitung, ‘as if Gubaidulina has let the trumpets of Jericho sound.’ In Britten’s Serenade, matching tenor and horn was an inspired choice for his spellbinding, elegiac settings of English nocturnal poems. Joining Ian Bostridge to perform them is the Hallé’s own Laurence Rogers. Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony was, supposedly, ‘A Soviet artist’s response to just criticism’. Now it’s known that in this Mahlerian symphony, Shostakovich composed a work of defiance so subtle that no-one realised. 6.30pm in the auditorium - free to concert ticket holders Kahchun Wong discusses this evening’s programme. Sir Mark Elder conductor • Augustin Hadelich violin Performed virtually by the Hallé and Sir Mark in 2021, Huw Watkins’s Symphony No.2 was hailed by The Times as a ‘great British symphony’, which ‘deserved the prolonged ovation’ the pandemic has denied it. Watkins hoped it would ‘challenge and entertain’ both the Hallé’s players and its discerning audiences, who can now experience its true world premiere. Sir Mark describes Vaughan Williams’s Norfolk Rhapsody No.1 as ‘a little masterpiece’, that makes ‘a perfect upbeat to the symphony.’ Brahms composed his Violin Concerto in the idyllic scenery of Wörthersee where, he quipped, melodies were so abundant he had to take care not to tread on them. Making his second visit to the Hallé, Grammy Award winner, Augustin Hadelich, received a lavish Gramophone review for his ‘richly characterised and subtly coloured account’ of this concerto. He makes his Hallé debut with Beethoven’s ‘Emperor’ Concerto, a work succinctly described by Alfred Brendel as having a ‘grand and radiant vision, a noble vision of freedom’. Dobrinka Tabakova’s tribute to Schubert arose from the opening of his Fantasy for violin and piano with its ‘really delicate kind of shimmer and tremor’, then the ‘absolute heavenly melody’ arising from it. Christian Reif conductor • Antje Weithaas violin Christian Reif, the US-based German conductor, returns to the Hallé conducting a programme of mainly 20th century classics, beginning with Spanish-suffused music from Manuel de Falla’s only opera. Composed at the height of his powers, Bartók’s Second Violin Concerto draws on the traditional music legacy of his native Hungary. Performing it, on her first, most welcome visit to the Hallé, is Antje Weithaas, whose celebrated performances combine technical mastery with deep musical insight. From this century, Tabakova’s Pacific from her Earth Suite was inspired by ‘the overwhelming force of Nature’. Similar elemental forces define Stravinsky’s cataclysmic The Rite of Spring which he explained was ‘unified by a single idea: the mystery and great surge of the creative power of spring’. Jean Cocteau memorably described it as ‘A pastorale of the pre-historic world’. 6.30pm in the auditorium - free to concert ticket holders Christian Reif in conversation with Dobrinka Tabakova, the Hallé’s Artist in Residence. ELGAR THE APOSTLES
ELGAR: THE ORATORIOS The Hallé’s relationship with Elgar stretches back to the first decade of the 20th century and Richter’s era. Since then, Elgar’s choral works run through the veins of the orchestra and Hallé Choir, not least during Sir Mark Elder’s tenure as Music Director. The Dream of Gerontius, The Apostles and The Kingdom are works he finds deeply affecting; performing and recording them was among his early ambitions. Each of the recordings garnered outstanding reviews and awards, with The Apostles in 2013 sweeping the board as BBC Music Magazine’s Recording of the Year. This is the first time that both Sir Mark and the Hallé have presented these great works as a trilogy performed in close proximity. A stellar line up of soloists has been assembled including artists closely associated with the Hallé such as Alice Coote and Roderick Williams. It’s a project too that brings together other members of the Hallé’s musical family and will undoubtedly provide a tremendous climax to the season.

Despite a shaky start at its premiere in 1900, the work quick established itself as a masterpiece. Elgar adapted Cardinal Newman’s poem of the death and resurrection of ‘a man like us … a sinner’, creating the work’s dynamic through Wagnerian leitmotifs and superb, varied choral writing. Sir Mark’s personal high spot is Elgar’s masterly control of momentum from the moment when Gerontius’s soul encounters the Angel, to his split-second vision of the Almighty, a huge musical span including two of the work’s marvellous set pieces, the ‘Demons’ Chorus’ and ‘Praise to the Holiest’. Singing Gerontius for the first time in the UK is the American tenor, Michael Spyres, whom Sir Mark describes as ‘an amazing artist’. 5pm in the auditorium - free to concert ticket holders Eleanor Roberts, the Hallé’s Archivist, on the orchestra’s relationship with Edward Elgar. THE APOSTLES Elgar The Apostles

Sir Mark Elder conductor Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha soprano The Angel Gabriel/The Blessed Virgin Mary Alice Coote mezzo-soprano Mary Magdalene Ed Lyon tenor John Roderick Williams baritone Jesus David Stout baritone Peter Clive Bayley bass Judas Hallé Choir choral director matthew hamilton The Apostles was composed for the 1903 Birmingham Festival, its seeds sown by a teacher’s remark Elgar never forgot: ‘Christ’s disciples were young men, and very poor, perhaps no cleverer than some of you here.’ For Sir Mark, it’s the closest Elgar came to writing an opera and he particularly admires its opening – ‘the mystical introduction, then dawn over Jerusalem, setting the scene for an epic.’ Elgar again skilfully uses leitmotifs in his portrayal of the characters, particularly the powerful music for Judas. Among the exceptional soloists are 2021 Cardiff Singer of the World, Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha, Clive Bayley and Ed Lyons, who makes his Hallé debut. In its review of the Hallé’s recording of The Apostles, BBC Music Magazine commented ‘Elder has perfect control of the large forces and dramatic pacing’. THE KINGDOM Elgar The Kingdom
104'
Sir Mark Elder conductor Gemma Summerfield soprano The Blessed Virgin Mary Dame Sarah Connolly mezzo-soprano Mary Magdalene Thomas Atkins tenor St John Ashley Riches bass-baritone St Peter Hallé Choir and Associates choral director matthew hamilton Of The Kingdom, premiered again in Birmingham in 1906, Elgar wrote that his aim was to ‘embody the Calling of the Apostles, Their Teaching (Schooling) and their Mission’. It shares leitmotifs with The Apostles and hearing them on consecutive evenings will intensify these connections. Sir Mark cites the Virgin Mary’s aria, ‘The sun goeth down’, as its gem, indeed a ‘standout moment in all Elgar where the exultance of the music is very real’. It will be sung by Gemma Summerfield; and as Mary Magdalene, Dame Sarah Connolly makes a most welcome return to the Hallé. Thomas Atkins and Ashley Riches sing St John and St Peter respectively. What Sir Mark describes as Elgar’s ‘Malvern trilogy’ ends with a fervent setting of The Lord’s Prayer, with the composer drawing together the now familiar themes that have woven their way through these iconic oratorios.
