“He’s my son’s best friend, they’re inseparable!”
Happy Tails
by Chris Stanfield
Three-legged dogs like Curly may walk at a different pace, but they offer the same love and affection as their fourlegged counterparts. While losing a limb would be a life-changing experience for a person, a dog is able to roll with the punches and continue living a very happy and healthy life with relative ease. “It doesn’t seem to slow him down at all; he’s as lively as ever” said adopter Nathan Dekelaita. “It took him a few days to adjust after the surgery but he picked it up in no time. He can do anything a 4-legged dog can do.”
Above: Nathan, father of son Nick, bonding with Curly. Who is happier? Left: Curly, confident and never looked back despite the obstacles he has faced.
Curly, a 4 year old Chihuahua, arrived at The Haven after being transferred from a partnering animal shelter. A small wound on the pad of his foot would eventually lead to amputation. The infection didn’t respond to an aggressive regiment of antibiotics and began to affect the bones in his foot. After trying several treatments a veterinarian determined amputation would give Curly the best chance to live a pain free life. Nathan hopes Curly and his inspiring story will help encourage other prospective dog owners to not pass on the opportunity to adopt a dog that may be “different” than others.w

THE HAVEN is looking to upgrade the living spaces for their resident cats and kittens. Just like George and Louise from the hit sitcom “The Jeffersons”, these furry critters are looking to have their very own deluxe apartment. A Kitty Crib fits inside kennels to provide the inhabitants with a more suitable living space by transforming an ordinary small kennel into a two-story condo. The split level more than doubles the area for each tenant, giving them more room to sleep, groom, play and eat. Kitty Cribs are also functional, offering a cleaner space by separating the cat’s food from the litter area. The shelter’s goal is to raise approximately $2,650, which will help about 24 felines. This is an investment that will provide each Haven kitty with a more comfortable, fun, and sanitary living environment. Please CLICK HERE to make a donation today and help spread the word! FORGET sad music and forlorn faces behind bars. Animals at The Haven are not in jail. Healthy dogs spend six to seven hours a day in a 50 sq. ft. indoor/outdoor dog run where they socialize with other dogs, play with toys, and splash in swimming pools. They spend down time in their kennels curled up on PetCot beds or gnawing on frozen Kongs. Working to reach tasty peanut butter or other healthy treats inside, the Kongs keeps their minds busy and reduces stress. Staff work together to provide our four-legged residents with love, fresh food and water, and medical care. Dogs get exercise and socialization provided by volunteers in the Dog Walker Program.

Healthy and more social cats have a climate controlled area: 200 sq. ft. of places for hiding, scratching, climbing and lounging. Inside, younger cats and kittens have toys and blankets or towels. Volunteers regularly visit for feline fellowship. You can help The Haven maximize space in the indoor cat kennels by donating toward the purchase of Kitty Cribs {see page 3}. Thanks to The Haven’s many enrichment programs, music at The Haven is soothing and the only bar is the one this shelter continuously raises in the quest for a no kill community. w

DR.MARSHALL of Banfield Pet Hospital gave us some great tips regarding pet food and nutrition. Q: When choosing our pet’s food, how can we provide a nutritious diet? A: Meat should be listed as the first ingredient, especially for cats. Choose a scientifically formulated, well-balanced, food to provide the best nutritional value for your pet. As always, work with your veterinarian to determine your pet’s nutritional needs, and buy the best food you can afford.

Dogs are omnivores, not pure carnivores; they can eat many vegetables and need the roughage plants provide.
Q: What advice can you give pet owners who want to share holiday foods with their furry friends? A: The best way to share is to boil down vegetables and boneless meats into a “muck soup.” Put this in the refrigerator to scrape off the hardened fat, and then spoon this on top of their dry food. Never give your animals bones, especially poultry bones, which can splinter and cause severe internal damage. Also remember, the cocoa in chocolate is toxic to dogs. It will cause an upset tummy, diarrhea, and possibly pancreatitis. w
