bbie, a Jack Russell mix, came to the Haven from the county shelter with a sweet disposition and a bad case of heartworms. Fortunately for her, generous donations covered the expensive treatment to give her a healthy heart. Shortly after treatment, Diane and Dick Bull gave her a happy home. Though Abbie seemed disinterested in the couple at first, Diane and Dick were determined to give her the love and attention she needed, even if it meant fostering her until she was ready for a different furrever family. So they took her home with them, hoping for the best.

Above: Abbie stopped playing just long enough to capture her smile.

Abbie did not disappoint. Once home, they discovered a new personality Abbie now delights in visits by the Bulls’ family, playing with her new toys, long walks and racing through the house. The family happily agrees that Abbie is indeed “the perfect dog.”

Separation Anxiety

Some dogs become so distressed, when separated from their humans, they dig or scratch at doors or windows attempting to reunite with them. They chew, howl, bark, whine or soil inside even if they are housetrained. These behaviors are panic responses, not punishments, for leaving your dog alone.

Being left behind can be traumatic for your dog if she’s accustomed to your constant companionship. Like a child on the first day of school, your dog can get nervous about staying in a kennel or doggie day care for the first time. Disruptions to family structure or routine can also trigger separation anxiety.

It will take time for your dog to overcome separation anxiety. Be patient and try to minimize his discomfort. Use a safety cue every time you leave that assures him you’ll be back. Give him an article of clothing that smells like you. He may feel better if you leave him with someone familiar, such as a family member, friend or neighbor. Take him to a doggie day care facility or kennel. When you return, ignore your dog for a few minutes then calmly pet him. Over-the-counter calming products can reduce fearfulness in dogs. Your veterinarian can suggest a good anti-anxiety drug that won’t sedate your dog but reduce his overall anxiety. If allowed, take your dog with you to work. Dog is man’s best friend after all, so they prefer togetherness to separation.

Going for the GOLD by Amy Winck

T

he Haven is looking forward to seeing everyone come out and enjoy two of our biggest fundraisers! Our annual Mystic Mutts of Revelry Mardi Gras

Parade will be held Sun., February 23 at 2:30 p.m. Always a fun, lively event, all proceeds

from MMOR will go to benefit the over 70 to 80 homeless, abused and neglected cats and dogs that call The Haven home everyday. This year’s theme will be the Olympics. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to walk in the parade and dress in Mardi Gras costumes or as their favorite gold medalist.

Pets in costume and masked companions must register

for the parade which rolls in downtown Fairhope, behind the K-1 Center located on the corner of S. Summit St. and St. James. Call 251-929-3980 for information or visit www.havenforanimals.org to download parade route, registration information, FAQ’s, guidelines, and more. Once you’ve had a few weeks to recover from parading, go see what’s for sale at The Haven Resale Shop’s spring sale during the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival. With proceeds benefitting the no-kill shelter, you can’t help but stop by and shop. You could pick up some steals and deals on home décor, pet items, and everything in between! The Haven’s Mobile Adoption and Rescue Unit (MARU) will be set up next to Greer’s grocery, on Section Street. Stop by and see if your new best friend is waiting for YOU. Be on the lookout for more information on both of these events! Then come and help The Haven win the ultimate gold medal: a no-kill community where every dog and cat has a furrever family.

The Haven Says THANKS to Our Volunteer Coordinator E

very year each of us celebrate important events and people in our lives. Birthdays, wedding anniversaries, and graduations are just a few ways we take time to acknowledge those we appreciate.

This November, The Haven celebrated the one-year anniversary for the nonprofits Volunteer Coondinator, Joni Euler. Joni accepted the “volunteer” position in November 2012 and has done a tremendous job recruiting and retaining Haven volunteers. “The dedicated staff and volunteers of The Haven are a diverse group, with many talents and skills. As Volunteer Coordinator they inspire, teach, and motivate me as we work together to promote the mission and goals of The Haven,” stated Euler. Onbehalf of all of us at The Haven, THANK YOU for your time, effort, and compassion. Gratefully, Michael Graham Executive Director The Haven

is the season to give, and what is a better gift than a new life? Through eBay Giving Works, you can help The Haven give new lives to abused, abandoned and neglected animals. The Haven uses donated funds to provide everything from routine vet care, vaccinations and spay/neuter procedures to life-saving surgeries. Additional income means more animals can be transferred to The Haven and get the care they need to be ready when their furrever families arrive to adopt them.

Giving to the Haven has never been easier. Anyone who uses eBay can donate right on the site using a PayPal account. Go to www.givingworks. ebay.com. Search by state {Alabama} and city {Fairhope}, and The Haven will pop up.

If you are a seller on eBay, you can choose to donate a portion of your profits {10-100%}, to the Haven. Heather Delker, manager of the Haven ReSale Shop, hopes to have items listed for sale on the Haven’s own eBay store soon with 100% of the profit going to the Haven. Let your holiday shopping on eBay give Haven animals new lives. It’s easier than saying Ho Ho Ho.

Volunteer Vibes

TIME- For humans a thing measured as seconds, minutes, hours, days, or years. A dog sees a volunteer holding a leash as “FUN” time. A cat purring in someone’s arms enjoys “LOVE” time. Animal advocates at adoption events give “HELP ME FIND A HOME” time to Haven animals. Fostering, working at the Resale Shop, assisting with marketing, photography, or “fun”d-raising events, is “LET’S MAKE IT HAPPEN FOR HAVEN ANIMALS” time. A dog’s wagging tail or a cat’s purr will reward you with “HAPPINESS” time. Share “HUMAN” time. “ACTION” time is becoming a Haven Volunteer TODAY!

Twelve Days of Giving by Liz Tetley

I

t’s easy to get stressed during the season of giving. What do you give each person on your list? What charities do you donate to and what do you donate? The Haven has a fun way to help you avoid getting too wrapped up in holiday decisions. Research shows that singing alleviates stress. Just look at how popular Christmas carols are. Sing the following list to the tune of “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” and in no time you’ll know just how to help the animals at The Haven this year. No dogs will howl unless they’re howling in thanks for your donations. The first way of giving to help the Haven crew: donate an item from the wish list The second way of giving to help the Haven crew: donate $5 The third way of giving to help the Haven crew: foster a homeless pet The fourth way of giving to help the Haven crew: honor a loved one The fifth way of giving to help the Haven crew: become a volunteer The sixth way of giving to help the Haven crew: socialize a cat The seventh way of giving to help the Haven crew: donate stocks and bonds The eighth way of giving to help the Haven crew: write an article for their newsletter The ninth way of giving to help the Haven crew: donate a vehicle The tenth way of giving to help the Haven crew: purchase Resale wares The eleventh way of giving to help the Haven crew: shop on e-bay

The twelfth way of giving to help the Haven crew: adopt a fur baby
