A plunger is also great to have. Should the worst happen and the toilet clog, your guest doesn’t have to be embarrassed. Don’t make your guests go looking for towels, either. A Mantel Three Ways
Words by Gillian GrefĂŠ Photos by Clancey James Styled by Kylee Trunck and Elyza Brillantes
I grew up in a house without a fireplace. But fret not, my mother foraged an antique mantel that we kept in our living room, where a traditional fireplace might have been placed. The white paint was chipped and the wood that peeked through had a charming light blue tint. The mantel always had a strong presence, but the holidays were its true time to shine with freshly clipped garland and sentimental objects. A mantel is a blank canvas for your holiday decorations—each year can be different, inspired by something new. We tested out three new looks this year: Coastal, Classic (never gets old!) and Colorful.

Cheap & Cheerful How to Fake a Dinner Party Words by Kate Connors Illustration by Thomas Lloyd
I am a habitual reader of high-end design magazines. The photography is gorgeous, ten dollar words abound, and everything is well, expensive. While I still harbor dreams of luxe dinner parties in my future, my current 24-year-old lifestyle and income just don’t make them possible (for the moment). Instead, I decided to lean into the ‘bohemian shabby chic’ vibe and fake a dinner party without all of the fancy glassware and tablescaping. Here’s how I did it:
WINTER 2018-2019
16
Thrift store finds To complete my tablescape on the cheap, I visited my local goodwill and shopped the home section. Platters, interesting glassware, and various vases don’t match at all but somehow create a fun and eclectic look that’s a little shabby chic.
Two dollar greenery My biggest secret to creating a super-classy dinner party on a budget is getting tons of great greenery. Eucalyptus is usually about two dollars a bundle, and a few bundles go a long way. You can arrange it artfully on the tabletop, or create a lush look by placing a huge bunch in a ceramic pitcher. I love the luxurious feel of tons of greenery, and it’s so accessible.
BYOB Look, by hosting the party, you’re doing your friends a service. You’re organizing a get together and taking care of the logistics. So, let your friends help you out and make your invite BYOB. This way, you’re sure to have a variety of beverages to try. You can make it even more fun by adding a prompt to your invite, like “BYO Beverage that you think Martha Stewart would love.”
Embrace Disorder Ultimately, throwing a great dinner party is all about ambience. So, lean into the fact that you don’t have the budget of an Architectural Digest spread. Use your coffee table and throw pillows on the floor for seating. Play a drinking game before food is served. Keep the music going throughout the night. Let your guests serve themselves!
In the end, there truly are no rules. Don’t marry yourself to the traditional dinner party experience, and try the cheap and cheerful route instead! It’s sure to be a good time. 17

She’s funny and ambitious—attributes we love at Havenly. Lucky for us, we had the pleasure of designing Keltie Knight’s master bedroom in her new Hollywood home. An older house typically means a unique layout and design quirks, which made this project special. Comfort, good use of space and timeless style were key for Keltie—if we had a successful podcast and our own show launching on E! (‘LADYGANG’ tune in!) we’d need luxurious sheets and a reading nook in our bedroom, too.

DIY a Casually Elegant Garland
A garland that’s anything but basic—bring some twinkle and greenery to your fireplace mantel with our DIY version of a holiday classic.
WINTER 2018-2019
38
YOU’LL NEED: - micro LED string lights - assorted greenery: silver dollar or seeded eucalyptus, lemon leaf, bay leaf, and evergreens are classic options for the season, but get creative with what you can find locally and in season! - florist’s wire - rope or twine - scissors
01
Cut your rope or twine to the desired length for your garland. Remember: if you’re draping this across a mantel, you’ll want enough length to give it a bit of drape, so be sure to account for that!
02
Trim your greenery to manageable pieces and remove small leaves or branches from the lower part of the stems.
03
Using your wire, wrap the branch to the rope base,
04
Repeat these steps along the rope’s full length,
making sure it’s secure.
ensuring you’re overlapping the branches so you get full coverage over the rope.
05
When you’re satisfied with the greenery coverage, intertwine your micro LED string lights around the rope + greenery.
06
Take a step back and admire your handiwork! Hang with Command Hooks, or lay it down the center of a long dining table for a dramatic and fragrant tablescape.

Fashion Forward Fall
In our humble opinion, a perfect fall outfit must be layered and cozy, with tons of texture. Shouldn’t the perfect fall room be the same way? So, we asked our Head of Design, Shelby, to create a room based on her favorite fall outfit. The result is pretty perfect. Sheepskin accent chairs, a camel sofa, and a moody color scheme prove fall is the sweet spot for fashion and decor.

How to Personalize Your Rental Words by Shelby Girard
Oh, to be a renter! Plumbing issue? Not your problem! Electrical

issues? Not your problem! Damaged roof from the recent hail storm? Yeah, you get the point. As a renter, much of the day-to-day upkeep of your home is in the hands of your landlord. Unfortunately, many of the design details are also in the hands of your landlord. Here’s how to make those small changes to make your space feel like home, without losing that security deposit.

1. Paint So many rental units come with a sad off-white/beige paint color that they use because it can hide dirt. Painting your rental with a fresh coat of bright white will make the space feel larger, brighter, and cleaner! And bright white works with any style and is the perfect backdrop to art. It’s also color that your landlord will likely be okay with since it’s a neutral that won’t require you to re-paint before you move out.
2. Replace plastic blinds with shades or curtains Stash away those cheap plastic blinds in the back of your closet until it’s time to move out. A custom roman shade or curtains that frame your windows will make your place feel much more like home.
3. Decorate your kitchen Rental kitchens are often out of date and in need of a major facelift. As a renter, you can’t do much in terms of remodeling work, but changing out cabinet hardware, adding art, and displaying beautiful serveware can go a long way to elevate a rental kitchen.
4. Don’t forget about the bathroom Like the kitchen, rental bathrooms need some love too. Opt for a more traditional rug, like a Kilim or Persian rug, in lieu of a bath mat, use decorative bowls and mugs to display Q-Tips, cotton balls, or for holding makeup, and don’t forget the art…I love a gallery wall in a bathroom!

UNTRADITIONAL TRADITIONS As standard as holiday celebrations are, everyone has their own twist. We asked our colleagues about their weirdest “untraditions” and got some amazing answers. We just may implement these in our own holiday plans!
