very July 4 we celebrate our nation’s independence with fireworks, cotton candy, parades and flag waving. I started thinking about what it takes to be independent -- the trials and hardships of going it on your own without ties to someone or something else providing safety, security and most of all finances. Then I thought of the entrepreneur. The independent small businesses in this country that form the backbone of our economy. Do you know what it takes to just give up that company job (or lose it) and start your own business from scratch? I have done it and it is TOUGH. Then you throw in a down economy and tough just gets tougher. So I thought I would dedicate this column to a few entrepreneurs who have jumped off the cliff and have chosen independence over the status quo. I strongly urge every Healthy Planet reader to give them a call or stop by their business and support them in any way you can. mAudE’s mArkET: Maude Bauschard, owner. HOmE ECO: Owners Terry Winkelmann and Phil Judd opened their store to address a growing need for alternative, organic and renewable products in St. Louis. Home Eco is “ Your Green General Store.” Since 2005, Phil and Terry have been offering St. Louis the best and latest sustainable products anywhere in our area. Stop by the store and see what they mean when they say, “ Yes there is life beyond the strip mall. I admire these people more than they know. As a fellow entrepreneur, I know the hardships can almost be too much to overcome. But the rewards of independence are immeasurable and impossible to deny. It’s about freedom, character and tomorrow’s possibilities from today’s challenges. Maybe that’s what drove our forefathers and foremothers to fight for the right to run their own butchery, bakery and candle stick shop. The right to their own destiny. Independently Yours,

Easy Ways To Eat More

ummer is upon us and there is an abundance of fresh produce available in stores, farmers’ markets and possibly your own backyard if you’re lucky enough to have your own garden. What better time to enjoy the delicious flavors of fresh fruits and vegetables than now! Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables plays a key role in maintaining a healthy weight. It also slashes your risk for heart disease, diabetes, stroke, cancer and joint conditions. Scientists are continuing to find that diets high in fruits and vegetables may help prevent or even treat other ailments as well. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that only 14% of adults eat three servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit each day, reaching the minimum recommended amount of fruit and vegetable intake per day. Some common reasons people cite for not meeting the recommendations include: limited access to fruits and vegetables, the misconception that frozen and canned fruits and vegetables are somehow less nutritious and the time required to prepare fresh fruits and vegetables. Others say that fresh produce is more expensive. Some people also state that they don’t know how to prepare fruits and vegetables in a way that makes them taste good. The fact that produce is good for our bodies is not a hard concept to grasp. The problem is that people are choosing to consume foods that have been dubbed “junk food” in place of the nutrition powerhouses otherwise known as fruits and vegetables. These foods— fast food, high-calorie snacks, fat-laden frozen din-
ners, oversized restaurant meals and sugary beverages—are providing loads of calories, fat (especially artery-clogging saturated fat) and sodium but little to no beneficial nutrients. Tips for getting More Fruits & Vegetables • Try adding mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, bell peppers or spinach to your morning eggs. • Top your breakfast cereal with pieces of fruit—both fresh and frozen work. • Add a mashed banana to oatmeal. • Add thinly sliced vegetables to sandwiches and wraps. • Throw in spinach (fresh, frozen or canned) to pasta dishes. • Bulk up your meatloaf by adding chopped up carrots, zucchini, onions or peppers. • Top your otherwise-boring pizza with chopped veggies. • Add shredded vegetables into your pasta sauce. • Snack on sliced raw vegetables dipped in low-fat dip, hummus or peanut butter. • Stash fresh fruit in your bag to have available for a quick snack. • Stir in fruit (fresh, frozen, canned or dried) into your yogurt for a quick, healthy snack Produce in Season in July: Apricots, Bananas, Beets, Bell Peppers, Blackberries, Blueberries, Cantaloupe, Cherries, Corn, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Garlic, Grapefruits, Grapes, Green Beans, Honeydew Melon, Kiwifruit, Lima Beans, Mushrooms, Nectarine, Peaches, Peas, Plums, Radishes, Raspberries, Strawberries, Summer Squash and Zucchini, Tomatillos, Tomatoes, Watermelon. ven as a child, Michelle “Mike” Ochonicky wanted to be an artist. Stone Hollow Studio began in 1979 when Ochonicky decided to pursue her love of art in a serious way. Although she works in drawing and photography, it is her award-winning scrimshaw that sets her apart as a rather unique artist. For 33 years, Ochonicky has specialized in the American folk art, using recycled antique ivory piano keys to create framed works of art and even bookmarks. Definitely a “green” art! Her scrimshaw has been chosen by museum curators from around the U.S. for Early American Life magazine’s prestigious Directory of Traditional Crafts for the sixteenth time this year. In both 2010 and 2011, Ochonicky was selected to design Missouri’s ornaments for the National Christmas Tree ceremony in Washington, D.C. Her work has been exhibited in the White House Visitor Center, Missouri’s Capitol Rotunda, Missouri Governor’s Mansion, St. Louis Cathedral Basilica and as far away as the Dedalo Museum of Contemporary Art in Italy. As arts editor of The Healthy Planet magazine, Ochonicky writes her ARTful Living column each month to keep readers informed of the St. Louis art scene. Stone Hollow Studio is eco-friendly, using sustainable materials to reduce our environmental footprint. Materials used for scrimshaw and all packaging are 100% recycled materials. City of Clayton Demonstrates How Municipalities Can Go Green Article courtesy of the St. Louis Regional Clean Air Partnership
N
ationwide, as communities look for ways to reduce their environmental footprint, the City of Clayton is serving as a model for municipalities in the St. Louis region. Clayton’s efforts to go green began in 1997 when the city established its Ecology and Environmental Awareness Committee (EEAC), a group of residents tasked with advising the mayor, alderman and city manager on the development and support of ecologically sound programs and practices. Today, the committee follows a blueprint for action that includes the incorporation of green building into city facilities, the establishment and promotion of recycling programs, and efforts to reduce traffic congestion and purchase green products. This blueprint can be directly attributed to the leadership of Clayton’s Mayor, Linda Goldstein. In 1998, Goldstein was elected as alderman and was appointed as a liaison to the EEAC. At that time, the committee had been successful in establishing a recycling program, but Goldstein had more lofty goals in mind. “I felt there was much more the city could be doing, so I called on two of my fellow environmental advocates to get their input on how to maximize the city’s green efforts,” said Mayor Goldstein. Working alongside Deb Frank, the current vice president for sustainability at the Missouri Botanical Garden, and Jean Ponzi, the Garden’s current green resources manager, Goldstein and her colleagues developed an environmental road map that has transformed the city into the green model it is today. Its sustainable accomplishments include being one of 33 cities in the U.S. to be designated as an EPA Green Power Community. Through the Green Power initiative, local government, businesses and residents collectively purchase green power in an
(Artist’s Rendering) The solar array that will soon be present on the roof of the Clayton Police Station consists of silicon panels which are projected to produce 105.6 kilowatts of electricity. This is equivalent to the amount of energy needed to power 10 houses. The solar array will be used to power the garage as well as the police station. effort to conserve energy. To further reduce energy use, Clayton’s Public Works Department changed all traffic signal lights to LED fixtures in 2008, and all city-owned buildings use an energy-efficient pulse heating system.
In 2006, Clayton adopted an ordinance that requires all new construction and major renovation projects that are 5,000 square feet or greater and are owned, occupied or funded by the city to be certified by the U.S. Green Building Council at the
LEED Silver level or higher. While Clayton’s police station already complies with this ordinance, this summer, the largest solar array in the Midwest will be in place on the roof of the building. The new addition should increase its certification to an even higher LEED level. As the city works to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality, efforts to encourage residents to utilize alternative transportation modes remain a priority. Clayton was one of the first cities in the region to participate in Metro’s Transit Benefit Program, through which the city subsidizes the cost of MetroLink and MetroBus passes for its employees. In recent months, city officials have also discussed making rental bikes available at area Metro stations and installing additional bike racks to make biking a more viable transportation option. To reduce vehicle emissions, 79 percent of Clayton’s city fleet vehicles use alternative fuels, such as biodiesel, and most are hybrids. Additional efforts underway to improve the environmental quality of the city’s municipal operations include a joint purchasing contract area for recycled paper; the use of green cleaning supplies, double-sided copies and nightly computer shutdown policies; city facility energy audits; construction material recycling in capital improvement projects, and paper and waste reduction efforts in city buildings. “It’s truly exciting to see all that our city has been able to accomplish thus far, and we look forward to expanding our environmental initiatives in the years to come,” said Goldstein. “There are a wealth of steps municipalities can take to go green, and we hope our sustainable efforts can serve as a model for other cities across the St. Louis area.” Cities or individuals interested in learning more about Clayton’s environmental efforts are encouraged to visit http://www.claytonmo.gov/resident /sustainability/clayton_operations. The Hip Bone’s Connected to the Leg Bone by Dr. Joseph F. Unger, Jr. DC., F.I.C.S.
A
s the lyrics of a famous old song go, the bones comprising our skeletal structure are connected. But that’s only part of the story. In fact, everything in our bodies is connected. It is truly difficult to comprehend or appreciate the extent and complexity of the myriad interconnections that make up the human body's healing systems. Because the human body is such an integrated and interdependent collection of systems, anything can cause anything. There is actually a famous book on chiropractic medicine by that exact title. The founder of the Sacro Occipital Technic (SOT) method of healing, Dr. Major Bertrand De Jarnette, recognized these connections and conducted many brilliant experiments in his quest to understand why people suffer. In one study he took a collection of volunteers and purposely subluxated (caused a misalignment to) the bottom vertebra of the spine known as the fifth lumbar. For each volunteer Dr. De Jarnette drew up a contract stating that he would do whatever it took to resolve any problems arising from this study. Traditional thought would suggest that a subluxation at the bottom of the spine would lead to low back pain and sciatica (pain down the leg). To everyone's surprise, this did not occur in Dr. De Jarnette’s study except in one person. Another individual became quite emotionally unstable. Another developed digestive problems and still another developed headaches from the misalignment. Yet another person became severely depressed and fatigued. From this and many other experiments, Dr. De Jarnette concluded that symptoms are not reliable indicators of where the problem may lie. A headache may originate from the low back, and low back pain may be caused by the head or cranial bones. The healing systems in man are exquisitely complex and function interdependently with all of the other parts of the body. Ultimately Dr. De Jarnette devoted his entire life to researching the interconnections within the human
body. He wrote over 125 books and thousands of pages of research papers. He patented numerous inventions and developed the SOT system of diagnosis and treatment. In the SOT methods of chiropractic and Chiropractic Craniopathy, Dr. De Jarnette identified seven major systems facilitating the body’s self-healing mechanisms. These systems involve the head, spine, extremities such as knees, shoulders and elbows as well as the organ systems. Even the organs have a direct connection to the spine and the bones of the spine (vertebrae). This is why an organ problem can produce pains elsewhere in the body. For example, everyone knows that heart issues can typically cause pains down the left arm. This is due to the spinal connection. This relationship also works in reverse. Spinal problems can cause organ issues. This is the reason why chiropractic can also help organ problems. If you're experiencing a persistent problem for which your doctor or therapist is having difficulty finding a solution, don’t be discouraged. As Dr. De Jarnette's research and the old song both attest, the whole body is interconnected. We tend to assume that a doctor can calculate the most effective treatment plan based on the condition or symptoms presented, but this is generally not the case. The doctor or therapist must painstakingly investigate and often engage in a trialand-error process to determine the exact solution to your specific problems. They call it the practice of healthcare because it truly does require an enormous amount of practice. At Atrium Health Services, we have utilized the SOT methods of chiropractic and Chiropractic Craniopathy in our practice since 1979. Let us put our experience to work for you. For more information contact Dr. Unger at Atrium Health Services, 2821 N. Ballas Rd., Suite 105, St. Louis, MO 63131, 314-872-9955.
At Atrium Health Services our mission is to provide targeted, individualized treatment programs and products proven to optimize our patients’ health and healing potential. With over 70 years of collective experience, our doctors are certified in Sacro Occipital Technic, an advanced healing system developed by Dr. Major Bertrand De Jarnette. With the goal of technical excellence as our guidepost, we have developed premier programs to help resolve even the most complicated health issues.

Probiotics after antibiotics
Ask The
HERB LADY
natural helP for healthy nails
Cathy Burkemper Q: I just finished a round of antibiotics and my doctor recommended that I supplement with some probiotics. How long should I do this? A: I am so happy to hear that your doctor suggested probiotics, aka friendly flora. Whenever you take antibiotics you are effectively killing your bacteria, the bad along with the good. Therefore, you need to replenish the good bacteria with probiotics. Many people do not realize that these “beneficial bugs” are important to our digestive and bowel health because they are “live” bacteria. Anyone who has irregularity or other bowel symptoms, such as gas, bloating and constipation, could benefit from probiotics. When these problems occur, you most likely have an imbalance between the good and the bad gut bacteria. Research has shown that ongoing use of probiotics can be very beneficial for not only digestion and colon health, but with your immune system, reducing inflammation and with allergies. So, the long answer to your question is, I would take them daily. Q: My finger nails are a wreck. What can I take to help them?
A: You did not specify what the problem is, but here are some general suggestions: • Biotin supplements can improve thin, splitting and brittle nails. It also makes them grow faster. • Soft, chipping or brittle nails – MSM + Vitamin C, minerals • Vertical ridges – May indicate calcium deficiency or lack or HCI in stomach • White spots – Zinc • Thin, flat, spoon-shaped–B-12 deficiency I also suggest adding GLA (Flax or Evening Primrose Oil). Photo Meditations in the Garden story & photos by Linda Wiggen Kraft

arts of my garden are on sabbatical this year, or should I say this gardener is partially on sabbatical. My front gardens are lovely, the back ones are not. There are large areas of bare scorched earth and neglected weeds. An invasive groundcover (green agepodium) has crept into two large flowerbeds. To get rid of most of it, I took out lots of plants. I now have areas of brown bare blank slate. It is not a pretty site. My veggie garden never got planted, so what is growing is on its own from last year. Cabbage, perennial lemon sorrel, rosemary, chives and the fennel are it. So how do I see the glass half full instead of empty in this garden? I use my camera as a meditation tool. I can focus on the beauty that is there, instead of focusing on the areas that normally make me cringe. A camera is a great meditation tool. A camera requires standing still, looking closely and

Healthful Travel Advice For Summer Family Vacations by Jim Meyer, Nutrition Specialist University of Missouri Extension
S
pring and summer months are the perfect time to squeeze in a family vacation. Too often, however, we return from our travels feeling exhausted and weary from an “unfit” vacation. The reasons are many: overeating, trying to log too many miles, sporadic sleep schedules and too little exercise. Here are a few tips on how to combine fun activities and healthful eating habits to help you and your family feel great, both on your trip and after the return home. • Pack some healthful snacks for car travel. A small cooler or ice chest works great to keep beverages and perishable items cool and tasty. Popcorn, pretzels, fresh or dried fruit, yogurt cups, bagels, vegetable sticks, 100 percent fruit juice, whole grain crackers and string cheese are all satisfying and healthy snack choices. • If you’re traveling by plane, drink plenty of fluids before, during and after your flight. Minimize any beverages containing caffeine or alcohol, since these can dehydrate you. Bring your own bottle of water on board, if permitted. • Stick with lower fat or light meals and plan in advance if possible by either eating before getting on the road or stopping somewhere with choices other than just fast food. Try not to skip meals while you are on the road. You’ll be less likely to overeat later in the day. • Restaurant eating can become monotonous and costly, and kids may not always appreciate the unfamiliar menu options. Why not make a quick trip to the grocery store to pick up breakfast cereal, fruit, milk and bagels for an easy nutritious meal you can put together anywhere. • If you’re camping, plan for healthful meals in advance. Think of MyPlate and include a variety of
fruits and vegetables, whole grains, protein and dairy. • Help your family meet their daily calcium requirements – about three cups of milk, yogurt and cheese. For nutritious convenience, bring along grated cheese to add to spaghetti, tacos and burritos; dried milk to add to pancake mix; fluid milk for cereal; and yogurt for snacks. Here are some tips for staying active while on the road. • Whether you’re camping or staying at a resort hotel, take advantage of the great outdoors and go on a nature walk or hike with the entire family. See who can spot the largest variety of birds along the way. You’ll reap the benefits of fitness and each other’s company. • Take along sports equipment for the entire family. A badminton or croquet set, a volleyball or Frisbee, snorkeling gear (for any nearby water attractions) and tennis racquets, all of which add up to fun and exercise. • Ask your children to plan an activity the entire family can do while on vacation: a kickball game, catch, relay games or tag. • Plan time for exercise – a mid-day bike ride, morning nature walk or afternoon swim at the hotel pool will help you stay on the fitness track even when you’re on the road. • If you’re booking your vacation at a hotel, be sure and ask about available fitness facilities. Many have a pool for swimming laps, aerobics classes, weight-training equipment and jogging/walking maps of surrounding areas. • Pack exercise clothing, walking or jogging shoes, comfy clothes and a bathing suit. • If you’re doing a lot of driving, bring your bikes and stop for a ride through the countryside. Don’t forget to pack your bike helmets and sports bottles to carry along thirst-quenching water. To view this article online, go to http://missourifamilies.org/features/nutritionarticles/nut55.htm.

hree million Americans have celiac disease and the counts are on the rise with over 18 million with gluten sensitivity. The continued emergence of people afflicted with some sort of sensitivity or full blown intolerance to gluten is slowly becoming an epidemic. As a food lover I could not imagine being restricted to the things one can or cannot eat but a person with celiac disease has one treatment and it is a lifelong elimination of gluten from their diet. The excruciating pain suffered from the intestinal inflammation is reason enough to abstain from wheat laden foods. But wheat isn’t the only culprit. Oats, barley, kamut, spelt, semolina, durum, triticale and any other grain that could be cross contaminated. There have also been studies to note that an increase in the elderly population and the use (or overuse) of NSAID pain relievers can be attributed to gluten sensitivity. Knowing a bit more about what celiac disease entails and where it comes from, causes etc. are a subject I would like to know more about. I attribute many aliments to several factors- genetics, environment, lifestyle, which includes diet. What in your diet could have created predisposition to this disease or that… Most diseases are in fact polyfactoral meaning it takes more than one factor to create the malady. Celiac disease is not age related, seems anyone can be afflicted. Children suffer from malnourishment and pain, lack of growth, ADHD and due to the inability to absorb nutrients. What could be more painful than a child not being able to eat, procure proper nutrients and thrive. Only a small minority of celiacs suffer from

refractory disease, which means they do not improve on a gluten-free diet. This may be because the disease has been present for so long that the intestines are no longer able to heal on gluten-free diet, or they aren’t adhering to a tightly prescribed diet, or they are consuming foods that are inadvertently contaminated with gluten. If alternative causes have been eliminated, steroids or immuno suppressants may be considered in order to alleviate their discomfort. Historically, humanity has always had some form of wheat gluten in their diets and the only cultures that do not report symptoms are that of Asian or African decent. These cultures receive their starches from other sources than gluten. The rice, corn, potato, and non-glutenous starches have not been a predominate element in their diets. Therefore the genetic disposition to celiac or gluten sensitivity is virtually nonexistent. Lactose intolerance, however, is another matter. With our modern diets so high in grain contents, celiacs are prone to contamination consuming pub-
lic (restaurants), processed or otherwise prepared by someone else. The plight of obtaining proper nutrition is a daily challenge. Eating is one thing but absorbing the nutrients in order to remain healthy is much more challenging. Alternative grains that can be consumed san gluten are millet, farro, rice, sorghum, quinoa, buckwheat and non cereal starches such as bananas and potatoes will not elicit symptoms. Aside from blatant dietary neurosis, I believe the sufferers of celiac or gluten sensitivity is very real. I have empathized with the debilitating nature of the symptoms with someone whose chips were contaminated- it took virtually three days for his pain to subside. I also believe certain people suffer from eating disorders by imagining their maladies in order to gain attention. Restaurateurs requests for gluten free items are increasingly on the rise and in my experience I would estimate many of them are gluten free by choice not because they suffer from gluten intolerance. Those of us who subscribe to a gluten free diet tout the virtues of weight loss, mental clarity and overall feeling better. Chances are the susceptibility of malnourishment through lack of nutrient absorption was the cause. Aside from the true disease I always say moderation is the key to everything. J
une 2, 2012 was the day my first-born daughter Natalie got married to a good young man named Ben. The Pettys are now pulling up stakes and taking their two-person act to Kansas City where they will continue on with their educational pursuits. The wedding is over. The blessed event came and went like Halley’s comet without much mishap, but with plenty of forethought. There are more ways to plan a wedding than stars in the sky. So I thought I might share our story and resources for any who are interested. Our daughter’s wedding and reception were wonderful and the vendors we used did such a great job that I feel compelled to give them well-deserved plug in my magazine. And perhaps you will give them a call when your planning time comes to see if they would be as good a fit for you as they were for the Lesters and the Pettys. First of all, you need a location for the ceremony. After some deliberations, we chose wisely and ended up under the trees in the herb garden at the Hawken House in Webster Groves. This of course makes great sense and good karma because I am from Webster Groves and my two daughters grew up there and graduated from Webster Groves High School. (Before someone asked.) The Hawken House Herb Garden was ideal for an outside wedding allowing 108 to comfortably view the exchange of vows. The bride and groom stood beside a wrought iron arbor while a
heavenly harp brought the ceremony to a beginning and serenaded them as they walked back down the brick path as husband and wife. If harp music is part of your plans, look no farther than Terri Langerak, simply the best harpist in the St. Louis area. The adjacent Hearth Room was delightfully arranged for a delicious buffet dinner seating the 100plus crowd. And there was still room for dancing. A small but efficient changing room for the bride made it possible to get dressed on-site avoiding wedding dress wrinkles. This historic setting was perfect for our choice of wedding and reception. Guests could eat, converse and wander about the Herb Garden. A great space for a great memory. We chose Butler’s Pantry as our caterer. The bridal party, parents and guests raved about the food

that tasted like 5 star dining. Everyone at Butler’s Pantry, from the early planning folks to the event staff, were great. They helped make our special day a magical memory. Richard Nix and his staff are top-notch and there is a reason they are considered St. Louis’ top caterer. The adult beverages were from Crown Valley Winery and Schlafly Beer. Guests sipped on a spirited red wine named Frontenac, a semi-sweet white called Traminette and a celebratory sparkling vintage called Chardonel Brut, which I learned cannot be called Champagne unless it comes from that certain region of France. I am a craft beer lover myself and thoroughly enjoyed the always delicious flavors of Schlafly’s kegged Pale Ale and Hefeweizen. Both are always crowd pleasers. And what about the cake you might ask. We asked St. Louis’ traditional bakers at Lubeley’s to create a double layer (chocolate & vanilla) sheet cake for 100. Beautifully designed with lavender swirls and topped with two ceramic hearts entwined that my wife Niki scouted out, the cake was a big hit. And don’t forget the bride and groom rubber duckies standing guard over the ceremonial cake until the happy couple shared bites and traditional cake & icing smooshings. And of course the entire event has to be captured in images for all generations to see. We asked our new best friend, Mia Ulmer of Birchtree Studio, to do the honors. You see a few of her photos here, but the entire portfolio is awesome. She covers all the bases and has the ability to put everyone she photographs so much at ease. And when it comes to a wedding, ease is a critical. Mia also loves to photograph children and families. She is a wonderful blend of creative and caring. Natalie decided on silk flowers so everyone had a keepsake that would last a lifetime. So you are on your own for the florist if you want fresh flowers. As for the invitations, thank you notes, etc., you can figure that out for yourself, too. Make sure you use recycled content paper, cups and something old, borrowed and blue. I hope these resources that made our special day a moment to remember, will also help you as you plan yours. It is a day you will never forget! eople cheat. We may not like it, but it’s a reality. Plenty of people have felt the pain and anguish of an affair. We often feel betrayed, abandoned and many people seem to get stuck on the notion that they were somehow not enough. However, I want to be perfectly clear when I say that the affair has nothing to do with your worthiness. The affair is not about you…..it happened to you. The affair in actuality has much to do with the other person’s deficit of self. As a result, they need someone or something to provide attention, excitement or they may simply take the cowardly way out of the relationship due to their inability to speak the truth about their unhappiness. Contrary to what people may think, an affair also is not caused by a lack of sex at home. Rather, it is about a need for excessive attention, admiration or the like. What is lacking in someone’s self esteem that they need all the extra attention? What is lacking in someone’s self-esteem that they need constant admiration? After many years together you may not be saying, “Wow, you are so great”. Perhaps he or she isn’t so great. And, since you’re not tooting their horn they need to get that from another source, as they are unable to feel that about themselves. Some people crave continual excitement. They are junkies for needing to create drama and distraction from an unfulfilling life. One of the big adult life skills we

need to achieve involves learning to create our own challenges and excitement in a positive, forward moving manor. Having an affair is really a pretty lazy way to get excitement in an otherwise dull life filled with unrealized personal potential. The distraction angle for what causes one to have an affair is quite prevalent as well. If you are sneaking around, doing something you are not supposed to, it takes up quite a bit of one’s mental space in one’s head. Then, these distractions keep you from thinking about all of the things you are not accomplishing in life. Finally, some people simply have not developed the emotional evolvement necessary to openly and honestly confront their feelings and their current situation. It is very understandable that someone comes to realize they are not happy in a particular relationship and that they no longer want to be in it. It is everyone’s right to pursue happiness. However, people feel too afraid to have this discussion with the other person and end things on a more adult, dignified level. You often hear, “I didn’t want to hurt the other person”, as if having an affair was going to somehow hurt less. The reasoning is simply ridiculous. And, let’s not forget a potential final excuse as uttered by Tiger Woods who honestly stated something to the effect of , “I had worked hard and I thought I was entitled”. Plenty of people think they can have their cake and eat it too. But as I always say, “I don’t give cake!” So, if you find you are in this place in life having been cheated on and wondering if you were somehow not enough, then think again. Someone else’s behavior rarely, if ever, really has anything to do with you. If you find yourself struggling with how to proceed then you may need to talk with someone to sort it all out. Relationships can survive infidelity, but it takes work and professional help to regain the trust that has been shattered. Your bodY is talking to You:
Recognize and Heal The Pain by Carolyn Baker Transformational Healer
I
find that people with busy schedules who don’t have time to think about themselves are the ones who ignore the pain until they can’t move. Most people with this lifestyle come to see me with complaints like, “I have had the headache for about a week”, or “My back has been sore and it is really beginning to bother me and exercise just doesn’t seem to help”. I have heard this statement twice since I have been healing, but lately I have heard it at least a dozen times. "While driving in traffic, "my tongue feels like it is too big for my mouth". This is typical of stress and anxiety and it takes 5 minutes to get rid of this. Other common afflictions I often work with are carpal tunnel issues, neck pain, not being able to catch one’s breath, shoulder pain, inability to lift arms past a certain point, long term headaches, numbness, sharp pains that come and go. Recently, it has come to my attention that people are not being touched by their health care professionals. The doctors do very little touching if any. There are machines to relax you, there are machines that rub you or roll up and down your back, but the human element is being phased out. Now when people have pain, they use a pill to mask the pain and a machine to help relieve the pain. When people come to see me and I ask them, “ How long have you had all this pain?” Their typical answer is, “What pain? I don’t have any pain”. I show the person by touching where I observe
the pain and the answer I usually get is, “It didn’t hurt till you touched it”. I didn’t create the pain by touching the body, it rests within the body waiting for someone to help, recognize it, and heal it. Another statement I get is, “I thought it hurt because I am getting older.” I am here to tell you that getting older does not mean your body breaks down. There are many care takers in our society who take care of everyone else and totally ignore themselves because they care more about others. The care takers need a lot of help but will never ask for it. Please, if you know of any care takers, whom you love, please give them a break and help them experience some bliss. Have them call or better yet, you bring them because they are worth it. For the next three months I am going to start a unique fee structure. My fees are going to be what you can afford to pay. I want to show people there is a better way of living. Once people realize their bodies are talking to them, people may start paying attention to their bodies. Start today by loving yourself enough to call me and let me work with you to alleviate your physical problems using my unique healing methods. If we start following our hearts in all ways, we would find ourselves feeling much better physically and emotionally. Parasite Guy on UFO and FUO: Aliens and Parasites by Simon Yu, MD
U
nknown to most Missourians, Missouri had a close encounter with UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) and aliens near Cape Girardeau before the famous Roswell incident happened in New Mexico in 1947. The source of the information was from one of my patients who is a university librarian who recently gave me a copy of an article which I briefly scanned. I politely took the article and threw it in the trash. I thought she was one of those oddball, weird people who are attracted to not only alternative medicine but also alternative history, politics, finance, and science. Have you seen the movie, Men in Black? Do you believe in UFOs and aliens? I know there are many people who believe in UFOs and aliens and there are many organizations worldwide, from our government to ordinary citizens, who are investigating UFOs and aliens. Thousands of documents have been declassified and released recently on the UFO phenomenon from U.S. intelligence in the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), FBI, CIA, and NSA as well as military intelligence of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. As of November 2011, the White House released an official response that, “The US government has no evidence that any life exists outside our planet, or that an extraterrestrial presence has contacted or engaged any member of the human race.” Almost at the same time, I received a forwarded e-mail from my patient, retired one star Air Force General Y, who wrote a letter to his friend’s friend as to why he needs to see me. He refers to me as a “Parasite Guy.” His physician is a U.N. tropical disease specialist and could not solve his parasite problems. I was not particularly flattered by referring to me as the Parasite Guy but I guess it could be worse. General Y came to see me four years ago with a working diagnosis of Fever of Unknown Origin (FUO) for several years. He has been evaluated at Walter Reed Hospital, the best military hospital, and by an infectious disease specialist at CDC (Centers for Disease Control). He said he gave over one hundred vials of bloods, urine, and stool samples to CDC for evaluation. There were no significant findings or improvement. He was officially diagnosed with FUO. When he came to see me, he was still complaining of a 102-103 degree Fahrenheit fever, bone chills, elevated muscle enzymes, back cramps, lethargic, poor sleep, nocturnal urinations, and muscle cramps. Acupuncture Meridian Assessment (AMA), an evaluation tool that I use, indicated his primary problems came from Large Intestine, Gallbladder, and Liver and Spleen meridians.
He was started on high doses of Ivermectin and Pyrantel pamoate (common dog parasite medications) for ten days. One year later, when I saw him again in Washington DC, he said he is feeling well and his FUO has been resolved. His fever was caused by parasites. I can only guess what type of parasites by his response to the medications. A hundred vials of stool, blood and urine analysis did not detect the infectious cause of microbes or specific parasites. I have seen a few more cases of FUO. Another case came from the White House, staff Air force Colonel R, who got deadly sick while he was in South America monitoring drug trafficking. He was air evacuated from Lapaz, Bolivia and hospitalized at Walter Reed and Bethesda Navy hospital. He had some improvement but still had lots of residual medical problems. He had too many symptoms and diagnoses to mention but one of the diagnoses was FUO. Many of his symptoms also responded to parasite medications. His dental problem is another nightmare I might write about sometime in the future. After his response to parasite medications, I was invited informally to Washington DC to Andrew Air Force Base and their Pentagon Flight Annex medical clinic to meet a White House physician (another Air Force Colonel H) who is taking care of all White House staff except the president. I demonstrated Acupuncture Meridian Assessment and how to detect parasites and determine treatment. He showed some interest but there was never a follow up from the White House medical team to investigate any further. That is not unexpected but still I was hoping they would be more interested to find out what I do. I understand that when a new idea is too radically different, it is hard to believe and follow through. I know there are many soldiers silently suffering from hidden parasite infections. They’re afraid to tell the military medical doctors because when the medical doctors cannot find out what is wrong with them, eventually, they get medically discharged. I recommend you read my short article, Operation Enduring Freedom: Saving Colonel H. on my web site. So, why am I bringing together these topics of UFO and FUO? Both UFO and FUO are dealing with unknown phenomenon. It might be unknown flying objects or unknown fever of origin. You may remember the famous quote by former Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, “known knowns, known unknowns, and unknown unknowns.” UFO and FUO are somewhere in between Donald Rumsfeld’s known unknowns and unknown unknowns. I can never say for sure that UFOs and aliens actually exist but I can say for sure that there is a connection between FUO (fever of unknown origin) and parasites. I can even elaborate and say that parasites are like aliens silently invading our body and taking over our health for
h
their advantage. There are a small circle of retired military officers from the Washington DC area who are referring to me as the parasite guy. I am not exactly flattered but I hope you understand why I am bringing together these topics of UFO and FUO. We are dealing with unidentified unknown unknowns. It seems Air Force officers are more prone to encounter UFOs as well as FUO. Is there a connection between the Air Force, UFO, and FUO? Is there another new conspiracy in progress? I hope you had fun reading this article. As a retired reservist Army Colonel, it is kind of fun comparing UFO, FUO, aliens, parasites and Air Force officers.

Hormone Issues? by Dr. Alethea Eller
S
he sat across from me at my desk for a new patient consultation. She was a lovely woman in her 50’s and she began telling me why she had come in. Her face turned red. She calmly removed layers of clothing while continuing to tell her story. She gently blotted her face from the sweat that seemed to instantly appear. Although, we both chuckled at how gracefully she handled the hot flash, it was an all too common event for her. If it only stopped there, she would not have been in to see me. She went on about her weight gain, extreme irritability and anxiousness. She just didn’t feel like herself anymore. Hormone imbalances can happen any time in life. Transition times where hormone levels change seem to bring about the most problems and symptoms: the young woman going through puberty, the woman struggling to achieve pregnancy, post-pregnancy, and of course menopause! “HRT in the medical world is hormone replacement as our bodies are lacking sufficient levels of naturally occurring hormones. There are strong opinions when it comes to hormone replacement. Believers in the benefits of hormone replacement therapy can feel better and more youthful. On the other side of the discussion are women that have seen negative studies on hormone replacement. Although, these women don’t always like how they feel, they are not comfortable taking hormones. And still there is another side to the story that few ever hear about. It is certainly not being marketed by any big pharma companies. Women who participate in this viable therapy find their hormones working better without ever entering into the debate of doing hormone replacement. Yes, there is another option. You can rejuvenate the hormone system that God created in you. You may be experiencing hormonal symptoms because something is draining your system. For example, when you are under stress, your body will steal progesterone to help deal with the internal stress created from your situation. There are many reasons why your body will try to tap into your hormone storage. When hormones are being pulled away then you will feel that you are deficient. Your body has the ability to make a suffi-
cient amount of hormones to keep symptoms away at any age. It sometimes needs “encouragement. Homeopathic medication is an incredible tool to safely and effectively encourage the body to make more of its own hormones. You cannot get more BIO-IDENTICAL than that! I love getting women results with natural hormone rejuvenation therapy. When it comes to your hormones: don’t replace it, Rejuvenate it! Dr. Alethea Eller practices in Chesterfield, MO. Ferguson Non-profit Buys and Preserves 129-year-old Organic Farm EarthDance creates a model for land conservation and organic farming education
W
hen someone “buys the farm,” it’s not usually cause for excitement. But when Molly Rockamann of EarthDance and Ron Coleman of The Open Space Council walked out of a title office on Thursday, May 24, they were elated. The Ferguson-based non-profit EarthDance purchased the Mueller Farm – a 14 acre farm that’s been producing organic food in North St. Louis County since 1883. The purchase preserves the legacy of sustainable agriculture on that land. It also ends a four-year struggle to achieve land security for the farming non-profit organization, which was established in 2008. EarthDance is in its fourth season of growing not only food on the Mueller Farm, but also farmers. Seventy-two graduates have gone through its nationally-recognized Organic Farming Apprenticeship Program, and several of those graduates have already gone on to start their own farms. Many more have started community gardens, school gardens, farmers markets, and more, revolutionizing the foodscape in St. Louis one seed at a time. With all of these successes, one thing has been holding EarthDance back from expanding: lack of land tenure. “Until now, we’ve only been able to get a single-year lease,” said Rockamann, founder and executive director of EarthDance. “In order to thrive, organic farms need to be able to plan and plant for the long-term. It’s incredibly exciting and rewarding that we finally have the ability to plan for the future of the farm, and that we’ve preserved Al & Caroline’s legacy.” The Open Space Council, along with a few donors, provided funds to purchase the farm, with the understanding that a conservation easement will be placed on the land to protect it from development. Ron Coleman, executive director of The Open Space Council, said, “We’re excited about helping to acquire this open space, because it means healthy food, healthy people, and healthy communities for the long-term.” For decades, Al and Caroline Mueller grew organic fruits and vegetables on the land, and were well-known in the community for their sweet corn and tomato plants. Al represented the farm’s third generation. The first and second generations gradually sold off parcels of the farmland to encroaching development, until what

remained was 14 acres. Al and Caroline were also pioneers of the organic farming movement at a time when other farmers were following the ways of “progress” to put chemical fertilizers and pesticides on their fields. “People would come from all over the state and region to see the Mueller Farm and learn their natural farming practices,” Gertrude Bozler, sister of Caroline Mueller, recalls.

For over 60 years they grew and sold produce from their farm stand and at produce row, and even shipped sweet potatoes to customers in Georgia and California, as they had developed quite a reputation for their organic practices. Unfortunately though, with no children to keep the farm going, the farm’s future was in jeopardy. When Al passed in 1999, Caroline posted an ad in the Missouri Organic Association newsletter: “Organic Farmland for Rent.” John Wilkerson, a retired professor, took her up on the offer and rented an acre on which to farm vegetables. “As we think about feeding people in urban areas in the future it is important for environmental reasons to preserve farms with fertile ground, such as the Mueller Farm, near these urban areas. [The Mueller Farm] stands out as one of the few farms in the region to use organic methods during the last half of the 20th century,” states Wilkerson, former president of the Missouri Organic Association and tenant farmer at the Mueller Farm. Molly Rockamann met Wilkerson at the Ferguson Farmers Market in 2008, and was thus re-introduced to the farm she’d visited as a 15 year old that had left an indelible mark. She believed that the farm was worth saving, and approached The Open Space Council, a local land trust organization with over four decades of experience in land and water conservation. With their support, EarthDance has flourished. In addition to the Organic Farming Apprenticeship Program, EarthDance offers regular farm tours to the community, and hosts a farm-to-table summer camp for middle schoolers. With a class of 28 farm apprentices this year, EarthDance is operating a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program and sells at two farmers markets each week. Special events include Pesto Festo at the Ferguson Farmers Market in July, FARMS Rock! at the Old Rock House in August, and Farmers Formal at Washington University in November. Big plans are in store for the Mueller Farm: future infrastructure includes a greenhouse, packing shed, office space, education center, small livestock barn, commercial kitchen, and an art barn for onfarm events. But first, additional funds must be raised. EarthDance is also seeking plumbers, carpenters, landscapers, and contractors to lend a hand in their farm-raising. isters Colleen Rohm, Cady Warnecke and Jody Capdeboscq announced the establishment of the Joseph P. Kearney Memorial Heart Fund. The Fund was created in memory of their father, Joseph P. Kearney, who passed away on June 10, 2011, from heart disease. All proceeds from the Fund will solely benefit Mercy Heart and Vascular Hospital in St. Louis, MO. “Our dad was only 66 when he died,” Capdeboscq said. “But he survived as long as he did because of the medical treatment he received. Creating the Fund is our way of showing our gratitude to Mercy for the exceptional care our dad received for so many years.” The sisters will work with Mercy to determine the greatest financial needs within the Heart and Vascular Hospital. Disbursements from the Fund will contribute to projects including research, clinical trials, financial support for patients and their families, medical staff education and technology updates. “We are grateful to Mr. Kearney’s family for establishing the Joseph P. Kearney Memorial Heart Fund,” said Trish Geldbach, Mercy vice president of operations. “This fund will help Mercy Heart and Vascular Hospital continue providing quality care to patients and their families.” Joseph P. Pet OWNers BeWare! summer Heat Can Prove Life threatening for Your Beloved Pet! by Dr. Doug Pernikoff, DVM
W
e all love to share summer adventures in the sun with our beloved companions, but please beware! Dogs wear a coat of fur 24/7 and they lack the ability to sweat over their body surface, making them especially vulnerable to excess heat build-up and possibly, complete life threatening heat stroke. And worse yet, it can happen very quickly. How many times have we heard a story of a pet or even a child left in a locked car in mid-summer. Statistics explain that even with the windows cracked, and outside temperatures in the low 70’s, it can take only 10 minutes for inside temperatures to rise high enough to overheat our pets and create an emergency scenario. Dogs and cats exchange body heat primarily through panting, thus the classic visual of an excited dog at play with his tongue hanging out of his mouth, lathered by copious saliva. There is real function there, aside from the ability for them to fling and slime us with their love and affection. But, like any good thermostatic device, the machinery has limits. The signs to look for can range from mild exhaustion to head hanging, weakness, disorientation, or complete collapse and loss of conciousness. Body temperatures typically record up and above 105 degrees Fahrenheit, and you often find the gums very dark purple, representing poor
blood flow and shock. Basically, the body is trying to shut down. Folks- these signs represent a true emergency scenario. Things to do immediately are to get the pet out of the sun, and hopefully, on the way to a veterinary facility. Begin to cool your pet by applying cold water or rubbing alcohol, especially in the groin and armpit regions where there is less hair and more opportunity to dissipate body heat. Veterinary actions will include intravenous fluids to cool core body temperature and flush the toxins out while feeding the organs with necessary fluid support. Other therapeutic actions will work to fight against shock and worse. In summary, it is best to prepare for your adventures carefully. Most dogs are short distance athletes. Take frequent breaks to cool down in shade with available water for both you and your critter. And, be sure to keep your cell phone charged with needed veterinary support numbers at hand. Please be careful and make your adventure safe for you and your buddies. am a forest walker. I feel most at home in an Ozark forest. When I visit ocean or desert, I often hear a deep calling to find a forest and wander the lush green depths. The realm of the forest is in my blood and bones. As I wind my way through the trees, I experience a reverence for the sacred knowledge held by the forest. “The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.” John Muir In this season of summer with the forest in full leaf, I take refuge under shade and tune in to the spiritual gift of trees. Our ancient ancestors had a profound connection with trees and believed they were vessels of infinite wisdom. The teachings of the trees are still available to us... if we slow down and listen. Go and be with a tree. Sit with your back against its bark for a while. Quiet your mind. Slow down to tree speed. Rejuvenate yourself with a walk in woods. Feed your eyes, fill your ears, awaken your nose, feel your spirit. Trees are aware of every puff of air, every passing cloud, every bird on twig and every human pausing long enough to join in the enchantment. No other sentient being stands as long and as tall as a tree. Large trees are vital to the well being of the Earth. As long as life on our planet depends upon water, nothing is more essential than the great forests. They are the “skin” of the Earth, covering and protecting. No other creature can perform their function. Humankind cannot survive as a species for long without the forests. Dental OzOne: Simple, Safe and Effective By Michael Rehme, DDS, CCN (Certified Clinical Nutritionist)
A
s a dentist, working in the oral cavity can certainly create some interesting challenges. We are constantly fighting a battle with infections that are found in the soft tissue and/or the underlining bone structures. These infections can come from bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Conventional methods have taught us to fight these pathogens with antibiotics, anti-fungal, and anti-parasitic medications. Although we have experienced years of success with these forms of treatments, we’re now discovering that these microorganisms are becoming more and more resistant to our therapies. Science is trying its best to stay one step ahead of these virulent bugs but we’re beginning to see our arsenal of weapons becoming less and less effective. What will the course of action be for health care in the next 20 years? Do we still try to “out-smart” these germs in the future or will there be other alternatives that offer promising results with little or no side effects? Welcome to the world of Dental Ozone Therapy. Ozone therapy has a long history of research and clinical application with humans. It was first discovered in 1840 by a German scientist, C.D. Schonbein. The first medical application was in 1870. As of 1929, more than 114 diseases were listed throughout Europe and the United States for treatment with oxygen/ozone therapy. Today, in the United States, oxygen/ozone therapy is fully recognized by the medical community in 14 states. Recognition is pending in three other states. In the last few years, I began investigating the efficacy of ozone therapy in dentistry. I studied the research and evaluated the science. (Conduct your search at PubMed.gov for “Ozone Dentistry”. There are over 180 peer reviewed articles.) I was simply amazed at how effective ozonated oxygen could be in the oral cavity. If it kills pathogenic organisms with no toxic side effects and no toxic byproducts, there must be useful and successful applications for dentistry. Prevention and Protection. The following two uses of ozonated water are standard in our office as extra precautions for our patients. • Ozonated water can be used as a pretreatment rinse for our patients to disinfect their oral cavity. • Fill the unit water supply bottles and Ultrasonic units with ozonated water. This protects our patients and our staff from aerosol contaminants produced by high speed instruments and water spray from the air/water syringe. The unit water lines will also be free of all biofilms (a complex aggregation of microorganisms growing on a solid surface – “slime”) when the ozonated water is used in the reservoirs. On more than one occasion, I’ve heard patients comment that they felt ill or became quite sick after a simple dental visit, for example, after a dental cleaning or the placement of a filling. It never occurred to me that the water lines in our dental units may be contaminated with this biofilm and could be spreading these microorganisms to our patients. The use of ozonated water in our office
today now insures disinfection and sterilization and leaves only oxygen and water as byproducts. It’s safe, it’s simple, and it’s effective. Patient Treatment. The following processes are standard in our office for extra patient care. • In our patient care, ozone is utilized in two forms: (1) ozonated water and (2) pure oxygen/ozone gas. Using these two agents in combination allows the dentist to treat all oral infections using only oxygen and water. Regardless of the location of the type of infection, ozone is able to treat almost any situation. • The ozonated water is the perfect irrigation solution for periodontics, tooth extractions, dry sockets, and even for post operative treatments to help reduce pain and inflammation. • For operative dentistry and periodontics, ozone gas is used to reach and penetrate areas such as, carious dentin, dentinal tubules, and periodontal pockets where no other antibiotic or disinfectant can reach. • Ozone gas is also a powerful antimicrobial agent when exposed to the prepared tooth surface before dental fillings are placed or before cementing crowns and fixed bridgework. Post operative discomfort can be significantly reduced by following this protocol. • For sensitive teeth in general and joint disorders, the ear and nasal insufflation therapies with ozone gas (gently letting the gas flow into the ears and/or nose) may also be used to provide a healing environment and thus reduce pain and discomfort from these areas. All these examples are possible because the infection/inflammation is positively charged (acidic) and ozone is negatively charged (basic). Therefore, the chemistry of the infection and/or inflammation attracts the ozone to the area and thus eliminates the pathogens from spreading. The use of ozone as a disinfectant device in our office allows us to enhance the safety and cleanliness of our dental environment for our patients and staff. In addition, dental ozone provides multiple applications as a therapeutic tool to help prevent and/or reduce infectious and inflammatory reactions that dentists routinely observe every day in the oral cavity. Our office motto is “keep it safe – keep it simple” and dental ozone certainly fits this mantra. If you would like more information regarding ozone therapy, please visit our website at www.toothbody.com. or attend our next lecture at our office, on July 17th (3rd Tuesday of the month) where we’ll cover the topic of dental ozone and its applications in further detail. Our approach to holistic health includes the entire body and the oral cavity is no exception. We are dedicated to serving our patients and promoting a level of health care that carefully evaluates and reviews the use of dental materials, dental procedures and also offers dietary and nutritional support for each and every individual that is seen in our office.
Did you know that examining the mouth can reveal the presence of illnesses or unstable conditions in other areas of the body? If you feel like you’ve just about exhausted all your options in your search for better health, have your mouth examined with a different approach in mind. Get motivated, get educated, and get ready to participate in a
health-oriented lifestyle that will provide dental alternatives and a nutritional foundation designed to help support your own body’s healing powers.
The focus of holistic dentistry is to consider the mouth as a part of the whole body. We use materials and methods that are more compatible biologically with the body instead of the traditional dental materials. Examples of non-compatible materials are mercury fillings, non-precious heavy metal crowns, bridges and partials or dentures. Alternatives to fluoride are used
for the prevention of cavities. Proper alignment of the jaws and teeth are the foundation of how the body perceives itself in space. The result of improper alignment can result in symptoms of headache, ears ringing, loss of hearing, pain in the head and neck and clenching or grinding of the teeth. Good nutrition is inseparable for good
health. If your diet consists of food and drink made with white flour, sugar and no fresh fruits and vegetables, your body is likely to be acidic with resultant more medical and dental problems. For your dental evaluation contact our office for an appointment by calling 636-4589090 or email at cherryhillsdds@yahoo.com.

o school for kids, maybe a lightened work schedule for adults. The pace is slower with al fresco dinners or morning coffee on the porch. The days are long and the dress code is casual. Amateur softball, little league, and professional baseball make a classic American summer evening. Of course, there is also vacation travel. On a recent jaunt in downtown St. Louis, I noticed groups of obvious tourists, snapping pictures of the Arch, strolling downtown streets with maps in hand and sneakers on their feet, smiling the recognizable smile of people enjoying a break from their everydayness, from wherever they call home. Nice! It’s good to see visitors. But it makes me wonder WHY do people vacation in St. Louis? A lot of visitors come here, so there must be something to attract them all! I love the Cardinals, but I think visitors come for more reasons than just our beloved baseball team. Last month, when I attended the Shakespeare Festival in Forest Park, I noticed a lot of out-of-state license plates in the parking area.

ARTful Living St. Louis Area Fine Arts, Crafts & Performing Arts Michelle “Mike” Ochonicky, Arts Editor Lots of locals, sure, but lots of tourists, too. Sometimes we “locals” become so accustomed to what we have that we take things for granted. We get used to the fact that so many of our cultural institutions (the very places that attract tourists!) are free, or extremely reasonably priced. I don’t even want to mention how much I paid recently for an admission to the Art Institute of Chicago, but it was definitely not free. So, soak up the ARTistic values St. Louis offers. To get you started, let’s play a little free-association game. When you think “July,” respond with an ARTful word, such as: CONCERTS. Nobody does outdoor summer concerts better than St. Louis. Check out Parties in the Park in Clayton. Pack a chair and head to Art Hill Plaza in Forest Park any Friday night in July for live concerts, too. Or take in a Wednesday evening Whitaker Concert at Missouri Botanical Garden. FILM SERIES. After a Friday night concert, stay at the Art
Museum for outdoor films on Friday night. They’re free and fun. Webster University hosts a tremendous selection of international films this month inside Moore Auditorium on Lockwood, at affordable ticket prices. OUTDOOR SCULPTURE. Let’s start at the BIGGEST outdoor sculpture in the United States: the Gateway Arch by Eero Saarinen. Have you been there lately? Have you EVER been to see it up close? (I’m always surprised when native St. Louisans tell me they’ve never been on the Arch grounds). People come from all over the world just to marvel at its sleekness. It’s pure ARTistic grace. And the museum under it is worth a visit, too. City Garden, right on Market Street, presents joyful works by artists from around the globe. And it’s free! The entire family will love its delightful fountains. Laumier Sculpture Park, just off Lindbergh in Sunset Hills, offers visitors the excitement of “discovering” the works scattered throughout the grounds. Until I visited recently, I’d forgot-

Until recently, these maps were often paper-based and static in nature. Through the advent of GIS technology, or Geographic Information Systems, botanical garden maps have evolved into a comprehensive tool that can be used at all levels of institutional operation. Rebecca and her team have mapped over 30,000 plants, as well as donor items, utilities, irrigation systems, and more. This data is put to use on a daily basis for various purposes, including landscape design and planning, collections assessment, and inventory management. By using the latest web-aware technologies, these maps can be delivered to any internet-enabled device, aiding in day-to-day management of the Garden’s properties, enhancing visitor engagement opportunities, modernizing educational outreach, and facilitating nationwide conserva-

why Do so many People have allergies these Days? by Jason Sibert
I
n years past, it was the pasty-faced, sickly kid in class that had all the allergies. Today it seems everyone is allergic to something – peanut butter, animals, pollen, dust, grass, and even the air we breathe. why are allergies on the increase in the United states? Approximately 54 percent of the population suffers from some form of allergy, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. This represents a doubling according to the numbers compiled in a 1976 to 1980 study from the National Institutes of Health. In addition, allergies cost our health care system $18 billion annually, said the Allergy Relief and Learning Center. While the scientific community is in agreement that greenhouse gas pollution is warming the climate, might this form of pollution affect human health in ways we rarely acknowledge? Washington University Professor of Medicine H. James Wedner said the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere could increase the number of people susceptible to allergies. Studies have shown that pollen, which often induces an allergic reaction, is becoming more prominent as carbon dioxide levels increase, Wedner added. Allergies are a bodily reaction to any number of things in nature that the immune system perceives to be toxic. When humans develop any type of allergy, pollen, dust mites, cats, molds, or food, the immune system acts as if the allergen is dangerous, even though it is not. The body releases chemicals to defend itself against the invader and these chemicals trigger allergic symptoms. The symptoms, which include impaired breathing, cramps, sneezing, and vomiting, vary depending on the allergy. Wedner said the cause of allergies is unknown.
However, allergy cases are on the increase not only in the US but also around the world, he added. Although there isn’t a single concrete scientific explanation as to why, the hygiene hypothesis states that the cleanliness of industrial societies is causing an increase in allergic reactions. Adherents of the hypothesis feel that the lack of exposure to microorganisms and parasites increases the immune systems susceptibility to allergenic agents. Local ecology can also play a role in the prevalence of allergies. St. Louis is among the top 50 worst cities in the United States for allergies, according to a ranking from the Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America, as it ranked 29th in the country for spring allergies. Wedner said St. Louis ranks so high in numerous studies because of the number of trees, humidity, mites, cats, grasses, cockroaches, and weeds. People can develop an allergic reaction at any time in their lives, said Wedner. The allergy doctor also said he’s treated patients who develop allergies when they’re growing up and some who don’t start to have problems until they’re in their 80’s. One can lose their sensitivity to a particular allergy at any time for no apparent reason, though it is rare. The spring, summer, and fall represent a peak

according to Wedner. He also said the two most common animal borne allergies are dust mites and cats. Approximately 50 percent of the country has a pet and 10 percent of the population may be allergic to pets, according to information provided by the ACAAI. Regardless of the cause, one can create an environment that fights the intrusion of allergies. Wedner said one can protect themselves from allergies by keeping their house dry, as it decreases intrusions by mold and dust mites and by washing bed cloths because it decreases the chance they will attract dust mites. Wedner also said allergy physicians use medications to modify the immune systems of allergy patients, a process called immunotherapy. The medication, injected into the patient’s blood stream through shots, controls the allergy symptoms. The shots include a small portion of the substance that’s causing the allergic reaction. This increases the tolerance of the patient’s natural

Several times per month I hear, “I saw your ad in the Healthy Planet and thought I should call”. It’s even more amazing when they say they live in Festus or Arnold.
