Being recognized for superior customer service never gets old By Maureen Langley mlangley@heraldt.com
T
ired of storing your cash underneath the floorboards or burying it in the backyard? According to readers, you should be banking at Indiana University Credit Union, which was voted the best Bank/ Credit Union in Bloomington. “We anxiously await the call and are always excited when we place first in any of the financial categories. We appreciate all the votes and are grateful to have won first in the Best Bank/Credit Union category for nine years. It never gets old. We are always excited,” said IU Credit Union marketing manager Karen Earley-Mullis. Earley-Mullis said the best part of the award is Bryan Price, president and CEO, takes time to celebrate with the employees by delivering a special treat to each department
and branch. She said it’s nice that Price has such pride in the bank and its employees. “We strive to give our membership great service and great value with a wide range of financial products and services, but it’s our involvement in the community that we hope sets us apart,” Earley-Mullis said. IU Credit Union supports performing arts with Cardinal Stage Company, the Buskirk-Chumley Theater and the IU Auditorium. Earley-Mullis said employees live and work in the Bloomington community and all decision making is local. Along with this, IU Credit Union sponsors sporting events from IU Athletics to high school programs to little league teams.
In addition, the IU Credit Union gives more than $30,000 annually in scholarships to encourage and assist members with higher education. “We hope that our members see our presence and feel out support in the community,” Earley-Mullis said.

Fourth Street Festival of the arts a real crowd-pleaser By Sophie Harris sharris@heraldt.com
B
loomington natives know that Labor Day Weekend brings more than just an extra day for relaxation: The annual Fourth Street Festival begins this weekend in September. This Bloomington tradition began in 1976 so local artists could showcase their talent. The event quickly became popular, bringing crowds in from out of town to enjoy the experience. These days, artists from across the country compete to put their art on display on Fourth Street. This year marks the 38th consecutive Fourth Street Festival, and director Martina Celerin says she anticipates at least one third of this year’s accepted applicants will be new artists. “Bringing in a mix of new artists helps them keep up with
each other,” said Celerin. “They can celebrate and grow as artists. What’s happening in the art world today?” Celerin says she appreciates the culture that Fourth Street Festival brings to Bloomington, and she wants each event to be a different experience. In recent years, the festival brought a new attraction to the streets of Bloomington: a spoken word stage. “The spoken word stage is a reprieve from all the visual art,” said Celerin. “It taps into a different kind of art, but its a very nice complement to the other works.” She says this event is one of the largest literary gatherings in the Midwest. So what does Celerin hope this year’s festival will look like?
“I just want to make people think, pause, consider, and experience the festival,” said Celerin. Currently, she and the volunteers are in the midst of the artist selection process for this fall’s festival. In 2013, the festival attracted nearly 40,000 art enthusiasts over a two day period. In 2013, Fourth Street Festival placed in Artfair Sourcebook’s Top 50 Shows in the country. Admission is free to the public, and the festival takes place on Fourth Street to Lincoln St. directly adjacent to Indiana University.

uccetto’s Smiling Teeth isn’t just your average pizza joint. So what sets it apart? One word: variety. This eatery, which won five Reader’s Choice awards in 2015, has plenty to offer even the pickiest of eaters. Aside from pizza and pasta, the menu offers selections like full chicken dinners, calzones and salad. The restaurant boasts an atmosphere that’s perfect for a date or a low-key evening with family. But superb food choices aren’t the only thing that makes Buccetto’s unique. The restaurant prides itself on being very involved in the community. “We do a lot of fundraisers — with IU Athletics, the high schools and the dance marathons,” said Paul Heilbrunn. He
says the staff contributes to a welcoming atmosphere during these events, which is extremely important for maintaining what he calls the “three-legged stool.” “The restaurant business is a three-legged stool of success: Food, service and friendliness,” said Heilbrunn, who says that all three elements are crucial for his business. According to Heilbrunn, the Buccetto’s staff really back up the “smiling teeth” logo with their willingness to help customers. He says both the menu and the staff are very accommodating to those with dietary restrictions. “We have gluten free options, even for pizza and pasta,” said Heilbrunn. “I know a lot of people are going gluten-
free, and there aren’t a lot of places they can eat.” He says it’s important to him that the restaurant makes fresh, highquality ingredients a priority. Buccetto’s won Reader’s Choice awards this year for best lunch spot, best pizza, best catering, best Italian and placed third for favorite Monroe County restaurant. Heilbrunn opened Bloomington’s first Bucceto’s in 2004, and a second restaurant was added to the west side in 2006. Buccetto’s sister restaurant in Indianapolis, Puccini’s Smiling Teeth, placed in Indianapolis Monthly’s list of best pizza and pasta joints in the city.

Smith’s Shoe Center known for top-notch merchandise and service By Gizzelle Sandoval gsandoval@heraldt.com
V
oted Best Shoe Store for Readers’ Choice 2015, Smith’s Shoe Center is known for selling namebrand shoes and their great customer care. Located on South Walnut Street and now West Kirkwood Avenue, Smith’s Shoes offers a variety of shoes, like UGGS and TOMS, for the whole family. “I take it as wonderful recognition from the community of what we work so hard to do and be the favorite shoe store,” said Steve Smith, current owner of Smith’s Shoe Center. This makes it the 15th year in a row that Smith’s Shoes has been voted for in Readers’ Choice. Founded in 1952 by Phillip Smith, Steve Smith has helped keep the business
alive and booming with great shoe selections. Not only are the shoes and service top notch, but Smith has emphasized the importance of listening to customer feedback and using it to improve the business. “(The customers) want us to have what they want us to carry,” said Smith. “If we don’t have what they want, they aren’t going to be buying just to be buying some (shoes).” Smith’s Shoes, once one of the first shoe stores in town, is now the only locally owned store left and continues to be Bloomington’s favorite shoe store. “It feels awesome every time (to be voted),” he said. “We love that the Herald-Times does (Readers’ Choice), that we’re
a part of it and that our customers care and recognize what we’re trying to do.” Smith’s Shoe’s Center is located at 1917 S. Walnut St., and it also is located on 101 W. Kirkwood Ave. as Smith’s Shoes on Kirkwood, so be sure to stop by.

n the eyes of Herald-Times readers and her patients, optometrist Kristina Morris is the best in town. Whether in need of eye treatment or a vision exam, Morris and her staff at the Family Eye Care clinic go out of their way to treat patients like family. “I love to see kids, because then you meet the whole family,” she said. “All my patients become like family.” Morris has more than two decades of experience in helping her patients see their world better. She specializes in pediatric eye services and offers treatment for dry eye, eye diseases, surgical co-management, emergency services,
family eye care and the latest eyewear and lens technology. One of things Morris said her patients enjoy is following on her practice’s website the annual mission trip she makes to a rural area of Guatemala. For the past five years, Morris and another optometrist have accompanied a group of students from the Illinois College of Optometry to a remote, povertystricken area where people rely on medical missionaries for access to quality health care. During her last trip in February, Morris said, the team saw 777 patients in four days.
