Bloomington Bagel Company By Anna Rochelle

M

ade-from-scratch bagels, boiled and baked fresh every day at the Bloomington Bagel Company (BBC) are the 2016 Readers Choice winners for the Best Bagels in Bloomington. BBC Production Manager Hannah Westmoreland says the quality of the bagels is the biggest reason for BBC’s popularity, followed closely by the family-friendly atmosphere. “There’s an upbeat vibe here,” said Westmoreland. “Most of our team members are college students, and we believe in diversity. This creates a family-friendly, fun and welcoming atmosphere.” BBC will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year in August, providing “East Coast Bagels, Midwest Service.” Westmoreland says they like to say the BBC is “locally owned and boiled.”

Before opening the BBC in 1996, owner Sue Aquila trained with a kosher bagel maker in New York to learn how to make the perfect bagel. The BBC’s bagels are boiled before they are oven-baked. Westmoreland says this process is what sets BBC’s bagels apart — that and high-quality ingredients. BBC bagels are made with five essential ingredients: Water, malt, salt, yeast and flour with no added dough conditioners, stabilizers or preservatives. BBC now serves bagels and more in three locations, offering a variety of bagels and bagelwiches, schmears and bialys, muffins, cookies, scones, croissants, challah and salads plus coffees, teas and juices making BBC a destination for breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee breaks and snack time.

BBC also offers personalized catering service, delivering box lunches or platters of bagels, bagelwiches, meats, cheeses, veggies, desserts and other specialties. The Bloomington Bagel Company is located at 113 N. Dunn St., open 6 a.m.–7 p.m. Mon.-Sat. and 7 a.m.–7 p.m. Sun.; at 238 N. Morton St., open 7 a.m.–4 p.m. Mon.-Sat. and 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Sun.; and at 913 S. College Mall Rd., open 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.-Sat. and 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Sun. For more information, call 812-333-4653 or visit http://bbcbagel.com online or on Facebook.

Grant Street Inn By Anna Rochelle

T

he cheery yellow and white complex of historic homes on North Grant Street that make up the Grant Street Inn is a home away from home for many visitors who return to the Inn year after year. General Manager Paul Wagoner says he thinks the reason the Grant Street Inn was voted the best Bed and Breakfast by Herald-Times readers is because the Inn offers a unique product combined with personalized service. Wagoner says once a guest has experienced a stay at the Inn, they tend to return and the staff gets to know them. “We have a lot of IU parents and alumni that have come here for years,” said Wagoner. “We remember their kids’ names and even what they like to eat for breakfast. We build relationships over the years, and they consider this their Bloomington home.”

Frequent guests also include visiting professors, couples on romantic getaways and visitors attending local events or just looking for a quiet weekend. Each room is uniquely furnished — some with fireplaces, some with whirlpool tubs, others with relaxing porches. All include a complimentary full breakfast. The Inn is staffed by a core group of long-term employees. Wagoner has been there 13 years but others have been there longer. The Inn grew up around the historic Ziegler House that attracted the attention of Bill and Gayle Cook when it was scheduled for demolition more than 25 years ago. Bloomington Restorations saved the home by moving it to its present location.

The original house was built by William P. Rogers, a dean of the IU Law School. Other owners have included William Graham who built the Graham Hotel and William N. Showers who owned the Showers Brothers Furniture Factory. After restoration, the house opened as the Grant Street Inn in 1991 with 14 bed and breakfast rooms. It has since added four neighboring properties, expanding to 24 rooms in 1996 and to 40 rooms in 2012. The Grant Street Inn, now owned by CFC Properties, is located at 310 N. Grant St. in the heart of Bloomington within walking distance of the Bloomington Entertainment & Arts District (BEAD) and the IU campus. For more information, call 812-334-2353/800-328-4350 or visit https://www.grantstinn.com online or on Facebook.

FIVE YEAR WINNER!

By Anna Rochelle

A

bout a year ago, Lucky’s Market Bloomington opened the doors to its new store on the far south side of Bloomington, and the number of customers choosing to buy their groceries at Lucky’s continues to grow. This year, readers casting ballots for the Herald-Times Readers Choice Awards selected Lucky’s Market as the best place in town to buy produce. Store Director Greg Johnson cites a number of factors that have made the store’s produce section so popular with shoppers. “It’s our selection, it’s also pricing, and it’s the freshness of the produce,” Johnson said. It may also be the atmosphere. Weather permitting, the store opens a bank of overhead doors allowing shoppers to

walk directly into the produce section from the parking lot. Johnson compared it to an open-air market. “It feels like you’re shopping at a farmers market,” said Johnson. This “garage door” entrance is a trademark of Lucky’s Market along with produce and other items displayed in field bins, barrels and wooden crates. Another contributing factor to the store’s popularity is the availability of local produce. “We buy from several local growers in the Bloomington area and also in the Indianapolis area,” said Johnson. Besides fresh produce from local farms, the store offers organic, specialty and gluten-free foods, a full-service butcher shop and a deli along with the standard array of grocery and personal care items plus a pharmacy inside the store.

On May 18, Lucky’s Market Bloomington will celebrate its one-year anniversary. The store is open from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. seven days a week. Lucky’s Market Bloomington is part of a specialty grocery store chain based near Boulder, Colo., with 17 stores in 13 states, providing a wide range of grocery store items with an emphasis on natural foods and local vendors. Their slogan is “Good Food for All.” Lucky’s Market is located in the former Marsh Supermarket building at 2424 S. Walnut St. on the south side of Bloomington. For more information, call 812-822-1081 or visit http://www.luckysmarket.com/bloomington-in online or on Facebook.

Meadowood Retirement Community By Anna Rochelle

N

estled on beautifully landscaped grounds featuring walkways, woods and a gazebo overlooking a tranquil fountain in a pond, the Meadowood Retirement Community garners praise for its patio homes and apartments for independent living as well as skilled nursing care. An impressive list of extra services and amenities are provided inside comfortable and tastefully furnished facilities, but Meadowood Executive Director Larry Diersing credits the staff for going above and beyond to make Meadowood a special place. “We are very proud of our 35-year tradition of providing excellent services and a stimulating lifestyle to our residents, their friends and family members,” said Diersing. “It is particularly gratifying to be recognized again by the

readers of the Herald Times as Best Retirement Community in Bloomington. “Meadowood is fortunate to have a great team of directors, several of whom have been here 10, 20, even 30 years or more, with outstanding employees in all departments. It is this longevity of staff and the quality of their work, as well as their care and concern for our residents, that sets Meadowood apart from all the rest.” Meadowood is known for providing a wide range of cultural activities, events and trips for residents. “Meadowood enjoys the privilege of attracting distinguished retirees from around the country,” said Diersing. “We host recitals by talented students of the IU Jacobs School of Music and host talks by speakers in a variety of disciplines. We take those interested on jaunts around the state and vacation

trips around the country and beyond. “The culture at Meadowood is stimulating and the conversations are lively and joyous. Meadowood accommodates not only the needs of our individual residents, but engages their imaginations as well.” Meadowood, first proposed by Dr. Herman B Wells in the early ’60s as a retirement community for IU faculty and staff, was built by IU Annuitants and is now operated by Five Star Senior Living. Meadowood is located at 2455 Tamarack Trail on the north edge of Bloomington. ince the Tranquil Vibe Day Spa opened three years ago, it’s gotten rave reviews from customers, and it’s also the winner of the Herald-Times 2016 Readers Choice Award for Best Day Spa. Tranquil Vibe owner Lori Smith-Linder is appreciative of the support the spa has received. “Our clients have been so kind to take the time to write nice reviews,” said Smith-Linder. Tranquil Vibe is a full-service day spa offering relaxing massage, facial and body care treatments, waxing services and hydrotherapy with a wide range of types of massages and treatments. Clients can choose just one service, or they can select from a number of special packages with unique combina-

tions of massage plus hydrotherapy baths with mud wraps or masques, or sugar scrubs. The spa offers therapeutic massage to increase circulation, speed workout recovery, boost the immune system and increase joint flexibility; relaxation massage to decrease stress and unwind; integrative massage to provide deep tissue work for those with active lifestyles; deep restorative massage with heated basalt stones; massages for couples; and prenatal massages for expectant mothers. Besides luxurious spa linens in comfortable rooms, clients can relax in a special “Tranquil Room” before and after treatments and when weather permits, sip a cup of tea and unwind on a creek-side patio.

Top 3 Day Spas

Spa policies include a request for “Quiet, Please.” Clients are asked to turn off their cell phones and speak softly so the Tranquil Vibe will be a haven for all needing to relax and reduce stress. Appointments can be booked by phone call or online at the spa’s website. Tranquil Vibe is open Sun. and Mon. from 12-7 p.m.; Tues.-Thurs., 9 a.m.-7 p.m.; Fri. and Sat., 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Tranquil Vibe Day Spa is located at 1128 S. College Mall Rd.
