Gold stars
TAYABA NADEEM, DECATUR CENTRAL
Parents: Syed and Patricia Nadeem GPA 4.390 SAT or ACT SAT: 1750; ACT: 26
Activities:
Throughout my four-years at Decatur Central High School I have been a member of the show choirs. I was a member of Expressions, the all-female, Nadeem beginning show choir, for the first two-years of high school. While a part of this group, I learned not only how show choir worked and gained singing and dancing technique, but also the meaning of team work, reliability, and hard-work. For my junior and senior years of high school, I was a member of the mixed, advanced show choir, Goldenaires. In Goldenaires, I gained confidence and learned what passion really meant. I also made many life-long friends in this group. Overall, show choir was my main activity over the four-years of high school, but I did do other smaller, less time-consuming activities. One such activity is National Honor Society. I was inducted into the society in September of my junior year and continued with it into my senior year. National Honor Society has taught me to work hard without the expectations of a reward, to give back to the community in various service projects, to be a leader when needed, and to have good character. Besides show choir and National Honor Society, I have also been helping out as a senior representative with small tasks here and there.
Community Service:
As a volunteer in my community, I have launched a weekly tutoring program at my local elementary school, while also tutoring high school students on alternating days. From tutoring I have learned that it is comforting to have someone’s assistance and reliability in the knowledge of the task; speaking from experience, as a young child motivated to obtain the highest grades possible and to complete all assignments fully, there were many times that I wished for help with homework but was never able to find any. For this reason, I knew that by creating a tutoring program I could help the children in need, and hopefully, this program can be passed on through generations of seniors so that it can further develop and better itself while also helping the elementary students. By seeing the children progress every week and continuously welcome my team and me warmly into their education, I have gained compassion for the elementary students. I also have realized that each person has an individualized struggle, and each person comes from different backgrounds. One may say that tutoring only helps the kids, but in all reality both the kids and I benefit. Along with tutoring, I volunteer with the local ecology team at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for every race event to keep the attraction clean and safe for its visitors. Picking up after others may not be one’s dream occupation, but by volunteering at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway I have discovered that not all people are considerate to the world and their surroundings, and oftentimes people make reckless and careless decisions; by volunteering with the ecology group I have learned life lessons that will help me mature. I am a member of my high school’s National Honor Society, and this year
we raised money to buy food, clothes, and toys for needy families around Christmas time and also held a dance marathon to raise money for families at Riley Children’s hospital; this project has really opened my eyes to valuing my health and possessions more because many people have far less. In the past I have helped my high school’s National Honor Society in various projects such as canned food drives and fundraisers for muscular dystrophy. Working on these projects with National Honor Society I feel satisfied with my assistance to families in need. Through my dedication to service, I have been taught that if one does service properly, he will, without a doubt, learn something new that will not only impact his life, but the community and the world around him.
College plans:
I have been accepted to the school of my choice, Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), where I have also been directly admitted into Kelly School of Business. I have met with my Kelly advisor to plan out the next four years of my educational path. I have chosen to pursue a double major degree in accounting and finance, in hopes of obtaining a professional career. I plan to obtain my CPA or CFP through this plan. Although I was not able to be a part of many extracurricular activities in high school not only because of transportation issues, but also because career focused activities were not offered; I hope to participate in extracurricular activities at IUPUI that will enhance my resume and give me experience that I can use towards my career. Such activities include: Women in Business, DECA, or even Kelly School of Business Accounting Association.
Career plans:
I plan to work towards a double major degree in ac-
counting and finance, so I can eventually obtain my career goal as an investment banker at a major investment bank such as Morgan Stanley post college graduation in May 2019. In order to obtain my goal, I will be sure to do as much internship as possible to gain experience. I am starting on this goal this summer as I will be an intern for Fidlar Technologies beginning in mid-June. I hope to have enough experience from various internships that once I do graduate with my master’s degree and get certified that I can obtain a job in my desired profession.
Most meaningful single experience:
After a whole year of completing two-week lesson plans within two-days, I knew I had to do something as I entered the sixth grade. On meet the teacher night, my dad and I anxiously approached Mr. Harvey, the sixth grade principal, and requested to skip sixth grade and move on to seventh. He informed us that there would need to be a meeting with my past, present, and future teachers to openly discuss this unusual request. My past academic performance, school conduct, and my future outlook would all be taken into consideration. We went along with this thorough deliberation, which took place before I had any thoughts of backing out. As I sat in the library, nervous and excited, my mind reflected on what they would be saying about me. My biggest worry was my young age. I was confident, that there would be no logical reason why I couldn’t handle the work. I was interviewed by the middle school counselor, Mrs. Voss, and the instructional coach, Mrs. Winegar. They were nice and I knew they believed in me. When the meeting was finally over, I timidly glanced at my mom and she proudly gave me the thumbs up. I looked at
my dad and he was smiling. I knew at that moment that my entire life was going to change, as it did, but I was more than prepared for the challenge. In the end it all worked well, as I will be graduating this June at the top-ten of my class.

I have sang a few times in nursing homes to try and help cheer the residents up and I have read to students at Indian Creek Elementary school.

was my most influential school teacher. He expresses how proud of me, and the band collectively, he is when we perform well and to our best. He encourages his students to give their all and he makes band class one of the most enjoyable classes at Martinsville High School.
I took my ability to run for granted. I have been running long distance in Track and Field since sixth grade, but during my junior year, I thought I would never run again. Through the entire season of Cross Country and Track and Field that year, as my running times increased, pain in my right shin grew more and more. After failing to recover with physical therapy the first time, I took a test for compartments syndrome. Compartments syndrome occurs when a layer of tissue that surrounds a muscle, the fascia, does not allow for extra expansion of the muscle and causes pain, numbness, loss of range of motion, and in the worst cases, the loss of a limb. It can be caused by a previous injury, such as a stress fracture, or even overuse like in my case. I received at least four needles into my lower leg compartments; there were two numbing shots and at least two needles that where attached to a pressure gauge. The pressure in my leg was right on the line for determining compartments! syndrome. I was not diagnosed with it, but I trained carefully, not wanting this injury to come back and continued physical therapy elsewhere and received specific stretched and exercises to relieve the pain. Now, because I found a way to continue what I love doing, I got back to running and am staying healthy. It is essential to find a way in anything you want to do, even when times get rough.

With my involvement in National Honors Society, I do quite a bit of volunteering. In fact, this school year I have done about 30 documented hours of community service. I don’t know how many I have done total. For me, community service is such a part of my life I don’t even think of it as a chore. My mom likes to remind me that my first experience with community service was when I was only 7 months old. I didn’t really do anything, but I was strapped to my mom as she served Christmas dinner at a soup kitchen. One year, I spent my birthday at a fundraising dinner washing dishes. I turned 15 that day and I spent the evening elbows deep in soapy water, and I loved it. I am a volunteer, plain and simple.
College plans:
Whenever I am asked what I want to study in college, I groan a little. Most of the time, I reply that I have no idea, and then they tell me that it is okay and I don’t have to know yet. My problem is not having no idea what to study, however; instead it is having too many ideas of what I want to study. I refer to my ambitions to the “flavor of the week” as I think of something else I would love to study or do in the future. For a week or so I will research everything about that field, until I get distracted by another dream. My proposed fields range from biology and genetic engineering, to political science, to sociology, to literature and linguistics. Off the top of my head, I am interested in studying English, physics, literature, linguistics, political science and public policy, medicine, biology, genetic engineering, sociology, computer science, and mathematics. I will not know what I want to go into until I try them all out. I do have some areas I lean to more than others, though, namely English, physics, medicine, and public policy.
Career plans:
As I stated early, I have many dreams for the future. Each of my four major dreams has its own career to follow it. If I major in English, I hope to find a job at a publishing company as an editor. I don’t care what company I work for, as long as I get to read good books. After working there a bit, I would like to get my masters degree, but I will work at the same time. Who knows, maybe I will even be able to write a book someday. If I actually become a decent artist during college, I might be able to get a job designing books, although I am not sure if I would even need to be good at art. If I major in physics, I will jump straight into my masters, holding whatever job I can. After I come out of graduate school, I would hope to get a job doing research. There are so many universities and private companies that are doing research in physics related fields that it should not be too hard to find a job. Hopefully it will be in some cutting edge field, where I will work to test the laws of physics. My degree in medicine will also lead to some form of graduate school, whether it will be medical school or just a program in epidemiology, I do not know. My end goal, however, would be to work for the Center for Disease Control or the World Health Organization. Public policy is the area in which I have a much more definitive plan. Before I graduate, I will begin the process of applying for the Peace Corps. After two years of serving in the Corps, I will spend some time working for a not-for-profit, maybe working and living at the Heifer International Farm in Massachusetts or their ranch in Arkansas, while I apply to the U.S. State Department to become a Foreign Service Worker. I would want to become a Political Officer, a Public Diplomacy Officer, or a Consular Officer. A job as a Foreign Service Worker would
involve two or three year long placements in countries all over the world. My lofty goal would be to become an ambassador, but that is up to time to tell.
Role model:
My mom and I don’t always get along very well, but out of all the people in the world, she is the one I look up to the most. I was a very stubborn child and I got on her nerves a lot. With all of the issues we have and all the fits I have thrown, I would expect my mom to have given up by now, but she keeps on encouraging me. Whenever I get really stressed she reminds me I don’t have to be perfect. She’ll even admit she is not perfect either. I used to dream of being perfect, but now I know it is OK to mess up. I also know she loves me very much, and I understand that love is honesty to another person. If you can truly admit your flaw to someone, you must love them enough to trust them. She has also shown me what sacrifice and selflessness are. She is a high school teacher and Arsenal Technical High School, and she spends eight days a week doing lesson plans, grading papers, and calling guardians, most of whom don’t care about the student’s education. She wakes up around four-thirty in the morning, and on the days that she stays after school to help students make up grades, she gets home around five-thirty. She cares so much about her kids. Teaching is not just a job for her, and she is not just a teacher either. She is a helping hand in a time of need and a provider of encouragement for those who don’t get it anywhere else. She helps students graduate, gives them advice, and she has even worked to find one of her students a home so he didn’t have to drop out to work for the $1000 he paid to sleep on a couch. Overall, thinks of others first, and has taught me to do so as well.
