Stars praise those who influenced them BY ROGER MOON roger@tmnews.com

Nomination process

As the students who were nominated for Scholastic Stars reflected on their lives to date, it was apparent that they have tremendous appreciation for those who have helped to mold and shape their lives. That reality came through as the students were asked who their role models are and which school employees had influenced them the most. The students spoke of looking up to parents, grandparents, siblings and family friends as they described the ways they had benefited from their interactions with other people. West Washington senior Abigail McNeill pointed to her mother, Monica McNeill, as her role model and said, “I will always be grateful for everything she has done for me. My mother has always inspired me to do what I love and I hope that I can be as selfless and loving as she is. Orleans senior Callie Mathers praised her mom, Margaret Mathers, in saying, “She always encourages me and pushes me to be the absolute best person that I can be. I hope that I can be as inspirational to someone else as she has been to me. Students heaped praise on their teachers, as well. Kirstin Clephane of Bedford North Lawrence wrote that Selma Cobb had been influential on her life. Clephane said Cobb “pushed me to think outside the box and helped my mind grow

Nomination as a Times-Mail Scholastic Star was open to high school seniors in the newspaper’s coverage area. The number of nominees were based on school enrollment figures. Twenty-six students acted on the nominations, submitting information about their academic performance, extracurricular activities and community engagement. Every student nominated is featured in today’s newspaper as being among the Gold or Silver Times-Mail Scholastic Stars.

Meet the judges A five-person panel composed of a Times-Mail representative and four local judges with ties to their communities and K-12 education made their top choices. The top 15 nominees were named Gold Scholastic Stars. Remaining students are recognized as Silver Scholastic Stars. Judges were Sari Wood, a retired Parkview Primary School principal; Annette Seib, former teacher in North Lawrence schools; Marc Fields, a former Mitchell High School teacher; James Babcock, retired Paoli High School principal, and Roger Moon, Times-Mail staff writer.

by offering different views of literature. At Loogootee High School, Waylee Wagoner said English teacher Brian Whitney arrived during her junior year and brought “a different kind of learning style. She wrote, “Brian Whitney is always reminding students to never give up on their dreams and to be the best that they can be. I feel that is very important to remind kids in high school and I also feel that is part of what still motivates me today to keep going even when I don’t think I can.

Judges’ comments

The judges for this year’s Scholastic Stars recognition regard the students as a group of individuals

who have “kept going. Sari Wood said, “What an outstanding group of students. These seniors had exceptional grade point averages, participated in many school and community organizations and volunteered at multiple places and events in their communities. “Their families, schools and communities have to be so proud of them. After reviewing the information submitted by the nominated students, Annette Seib said, “I love their giving and serving spirits. A first-time Scholastic Stars judge, Marc Fields observed that most of them “are men and women of faith. He also said, “There is a great diversity in career paths that the students plan on pursuing.

“The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.”

Follow your dreams. Be your own success story. REACH HIGHER, DO MORE.

Expand your horizons. Reach your potential

No matter where you want to go in life – education will help get you there.
