Week 3 - Tiferet Drinking from the Flow of Nourishment Blessing to Count the Omer The week is an opportunity for...
Welcoming Nourishment at the Edges Where Hesed releases the ow of nourishment, and Gevurah de nes the boundaries, Tiferet provides access points - places and processes that allow all of life to drink from the ow. Look within: to the magni cence of the microbiome, an entire microscopic community working in tandem with our gut biologies. Look without: to green leaves stretching to the sun, to deep roots spreading to soak up rain. Look between: to where many systems, species, and entities meet at the edges. There is potency in these interdependencies, these meeting points of exchange, balance, and innate generosity.

16th Day of the Omer
Gevurah sh'b' Tiferet Welcoming Nourishment at the Edges MULTIPLE FUNCTIONAL EDGES OF HERB Every spring I buy a rosemary plant and put it right outside my front door… for the express purpose of running my ngers through her as I come and go, activating her aromatic qualities. Good for the hair and scalp, I also use some drops of her essential oil in diluted apple cider vinegar as a rinse. So generous is she that she also gifts us with culinary and medicinal properties If some of your friends are herbs and you want to get to know them better... in the herbalist community, training is done by writing monographs to become intimate with speci c herbs. So, if you google “monograph” with the name of any herb, you get solid peek into their world Here are two examples of herbal monographs • Ginger monograph at the Sloan Kettering websit • Rosemary monograph from Herb Rally

Tiferet sh'b' Tiferet Welcoming Nourishment at the Edges OUR INTERNAL MICROBIOM The Ultimate Human Edges Drinking-in-Nourishment.. “The foundation that the gut and its vast microbiome provide for human health cannot be over emphasized. In a profoundly eloquent method of checks and balances, mother nature has designed our gut barrier (the primary structure that de nes your human selfidentity at the biologic level) to be completely dependent on its continuous contact with the vast microbial population of the earth. Everything you breathe, eat, and touch is an extension of your microbiome, making you and the natural world inevitably intertwined towards health.” (Zach Bush, triple board certi ed MD) Jicama, a crunchy, refreshing, prebiotic treat for the microbiome

18th Day of the Omer DEEP OLD Sounds of the Forest
Netzach sh'b' Tiferet Welcoming Nourishment at the Edges
Visit random forests around the world through their sounds. tree.fm is a project in the Creative Commons.
Rethinking ‘Forest Bathing I used to equate my Contemplative Forest Walks with ‘Forest Bathing’ or ‘Forest Therapy’ but those phrases always struck me as a little off. It likely plays differently in its native Japanese, but for me, the phrases feel privileged and extractive, (hmmm... big thoughts/feelings!) as they edge around our identity as consumers-of-nature and separate-from-nature.
Tap below.
My current work/play is guring out ways to decolonize these practices by shifting relationships with other-than-human beings, from thinking of them as objects to relating to them as subjects. ‘Gaia’ is one big home and we are all living in it together. One part of the practice is inviting other-than-human friendships into my heart and recognizing all as Kin.

So, when I go out for an intentional nature encounter, rather than ‘bathing’ or ‘therapy’, I visualize crossing a threshold - often an actual physical demarkation - where I notice the diversity of conversations going on whether I am there or not, ha! and choose where to join in.

20th Day of the Omer
CORRECTING HISTORY Watch about George Washington Carver (13 minutes, invest the time!)
Yesod sh'b' Tiferet Welcoming Nourishment at the Edges IT’S ALL ABOUT THE SOI Boom!! It was 2006, and my worldview was forever altered when I read Chapter 8 of Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma. There, Pollan described the regenerative eco-system, food-system, choreographed like an elegant ballet, at Polyface Farm and how it is all about the soil. What really blew my mind was how, as a voracious life-long-learner, I had reached 48 and knew nothing about soil! So I dove in.. No-till gardening, nitrogen- xing cover crop, season extension, composting, vermi-composting, permaculture, bee-keeping, water catchment, backyard chickens, food forests, aquaponics, fermentation, mushroom cultivation, mycoremediation.. If these words and concepts are new for you and you want to dip your toes in, you could start here or here. If you want to start composting, here are the basics/(pdf for printing). And, of course, you could get to the library and read Michael Pollan.

21st Day of the Omer
Malkhut sh'b' Tiferet Welcoming Nourishment at the Edges MAKING FRIENDS WITH PROBIOTIC Bacteria and fungi have been carried by the winds around the edges of Gaia for millions of years. Humans apparently learned to capture these microorganisms to ferment food as long ago as 13,000 years ago 10 Fermented Foods You Can Easily Make at Home About Dairy Ke r
The microorganisms from the wind are in cahoots with the microbiome in our gut... the fermented foods are essentially predigested and make nutrients more accessible for our human nourishment So thank the fungi when you consume coffee, cheese, sourdough, sour cream, wine, sauerkraut, soy sauce, kimchi, natto, miso... the list goes on...
