Landscaping Curbing Owner Has Come Full Circle Drew Philippi learned the art of unique curbing styles from the ground up. In the summer of 1998, he turned 16 and started working for Landscape Curbing of Lincoln. He continued to work for Landscape Curbing part time during the remainder of his high school career and throughout college. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the College of Journalism at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he majored in advertising. When the company sold in 2004, the new owner of Landscape Curbing of Lincoln recognized Drew’s hard work and dedication to the company and wanted him to remain on his team. Drew helped run the company for the new owner from 2004-’06. He had reached the point where he was in charge of every aspect of the business but still had no ownership. Looking for a great place to live and start their own curbing business, Drew and the woman he would marry, Katie Swarts, did extensive market research. Their search led them to Colorado Springs, CO, where they moved in January 2007. Their research proved to be accurate. “The business took off like a wildfire,” said Drew. The couple owned Landscape Curbing of Colorado from 2007-2009, making tons of connections and building many successful business and personal relationships. But the appeal of Lincoln lingered. Drew, born and raised in Lincoln and a graduate of Lincoln High School, looked into buying the company in Lincoln for whom he worked for nearly 10 years. The couple met with the owner of Landscape Curbing of Lincoln on a number of occasions about buying the business, and on Jan. 1, 2010, the couple bought the business.
In a dozen years, Drew’s “full-circle” journey had taken him from a 16-year-old laborer to the owner of the business. Similar to their initial business venture in Colorado, they’ve succeeded in Lincoln and Omaha, but unlike their starting-from-scratch business venture in Colorado Springs, Drew and Katie knew they were buying a proven commodity known for quality work. Thanks to continued hard work and dedication, Drew and Katie have more than doubled the company’s business sales volume compared to years past. Today, the couple stay busy entertaining 3 1/2 year old son, Nash, and 8 month old daughter, Jules. Drew goes back to Colorado Springs periodically to train with his mentor to sharpen his skills and stay ahead of the ever changing landscape trends. The training recharges the batteries and helps him produce the highest-quality work and the most unique curbing styles in Nebraska.
