Hire remodelers who have more than three years of experience, membership in the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), a good record with the Better Business Bureau, and positive customer references. Most important, select a remodeler you trust. Fall is a great time of the year to begin planning for home renovations. The kids are back in school and there is a little more peace and quiet for planning. In this month’s edition of TheHomeMag, I’m going to give you the 16 best tips for making your home remodeling project a smooth success. So let’s begin!
Do you planning first. Do not ‘plan as you go’. Have a well laid out plan before you start your remodeling job. How many times have you visited a friend who is ‘just doing a small wallpaper job’ and upon visiting, you’re shocked to find out that they’ve also torn up all of the adjacent rooms as well? Don’t be like them! Beginning with a clear, well thought out plan will save you countless hours in the end, not to mention headaches.
Buy quality materials. This is one of the biggest mistakes we all tend to make. The old adage couldn’t be more applicable – you get what you pay for. Buying quality materials and tools is particularly important when it comes to your project’s success and your own safety.
Be safe. Invest in personal safety goggles, ear plugs, good gloves and work boots. Don’t delay your project because you end in the ER getting a nail removed from your foot or worse yet, something in your eye.
Take correct measurements. It may be hard to believe but even an inch or two can make a huge difference in the end result of your project. If you aren’t quite sure if you’ve measured something correctly, don’t hesitate to call someone to come over and give you a hand.
Handle your prep work immediately. I know this is a tough one because prep work is tedious but if you take care of it up front, your project will go much more efficiently and cost less in the long run.
Do the doorways right. Review your entire floor plan first and make sure each room has more than one exit. For the high traffic rooms, such as the kitchen and living room, insure the doorways are big enough for multiple people to pass through easily.
Make your halls and stairs bigger. Bigger is better when it comes to hallways and stairs. When in doubt, go with the larger option. Having grander hallways and stairs really will pay dividends in the overall impact of your home.
Show your bathroom the respect it deserves! If you are planning a smaller bathroom or powder room, be sure the fixtures, sinks and toilets are to scale. And feel free to dress it up a bit too. Bold colors and prints work really well in small rooms.
Be mindful of your home’s lighting.
Most of us don’t realize how much lighting contributes to the mood in a room. Use a combination of general lighting, task lighting and accent lighting to create the best ambiance possible.
Select the correct paint. The rule of thumb is: flat paint for ceilings and walls and semi-gloss for trim.
Don’t skimp on the windows. This is not an area you want to cut back on spending. Good windows are an investment in your home and will save heating and air-conditioning costs down the road.
Update the electrical system. Often we forget about the electrical system because it’s hidden from view. Walk through your home with an electrician and plan your outlets, e.g. where they go, which type, and make sure they are up to code.
Consider your home’s style. While you are remodeling, ask yourself, is this a Craftsman, Spanish, or Georgian home? instance. Renovate your interior to complement your home’s style.
Don’t forget the permits. This is another one of those tasks we tend to overlook because it’s not staring us in the face. You don’t want to be one of those stories at your kid’s bus stop where something serious happens and your homeowner’s insurance won’t cover it because you didn’t get your permit handled.
Pick the contractor that’s right for you. Your contractor is practically going to be one of the family by the time your remodeling job is finished so it’s important to pick the right one. Make sure you feel comfortable with two-way communication and that your styles are compatible. Get a written proposal up front. Once you settle on who your contractor will be, you should have in writing: 1) how change orders will be handled; 2) a contract; 3) a project plan and 4) a written lien waiver upon completion of the work to insure contractors and subcontractors are paid accordingly.
Finally, anticipate a little bit of chaos. Set realistic expectations about the cadence of your project. Know that it’s normal to feel uneasy about having your house renovated, but once it’s all done, you’ll soon forget those feelings and enjoy your new home! TO ADVERTISE CALL: (215) 230-6933
