Being Home Smart

Prepare & Protect Your Home

from

\ Prepare NOW • Protect your property. Declutter drains and gutters. Cut back overgrown tree limbs. Assure your screen enclosures are properly secured. • Install check valves in plumbing to prevent backups. Consider hurricane shutters and home generators. (Remember during a storm use a generator or other gasoline-powered machinery outdoors ONLY and away from windows.) Use surge protectors on all electronics. While not every contractor who offers services is trying to cheat you, there are some red flags thatEmergency indicate someone is untrustworthy: • Sign up for the Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio also provides emergency alerts. • Door-to-door sales. Beware of anyone who knocks on your door offering to make repairs orfor to flash provide leftover materials from another job. Tips to find a reputable contractor

“Even when you’re stressed...do the research.”

Even when you’re stressed by a situation like the aftermath of a storm, do the research you would at any other time to choose a good contractor. After all, you want the work to be done right the first time. The first step everyone should do is check if the contractor is state registered here in Florida (myfloridalicense.com). If they are, great. If not, check to see if they are registered in your county (pcclb.com, hillsboroughcounty.org or polk-county.net). In Florida, all contractors doing work on homes must be registered in the local county to perform work unless they are a state registered contractor. If they do not appear in either site, there’s a good chance they’re not licensed to perform the work. Additional steps you should take before you choose your contractor: • Ask friends and family for references. • Check for reviews and complaints online on sites such as the Better Business Bureau and Yelp. • Depend on trusted publications and media sources, such as TheHomeMag. • Interview several contractors about their experience and ask for their insurance information. • Call references and ask about their experience with your prospective contractor.

• Get several bids to compare the range of prices. At TheHomeMag, most of our advertisers have been with us for several years. These are local, trusted, licensed, and insured professionals in our community. We believe that they will provide you with the quality services you need and expect during these difficult times. When your house is a mess, it’s natural to want to hire the first people who say they can fix it. But if you choose carefully, you’re more likely to end up with a home you can enjoy again rather than a second round of home improvement hassles.
