From The Ground Up - What Executive Care Offers Welcome to the April edition of TheHomeMag. This is our first edition in TheHomeMag, and we are looking forward too many years of writing. For those of you that have been enjoying our monthly articles for the last twelve years in House2Home, please continue to do so in TheHomeMag. We are new to the magazine, so let me introduce myself and our company. I am the owner of Executive Care Landscape. We are a five-crew company with two crews doing commercial maintenance, and three crews doing residential landscape. We have been in business since 1989. As the owner, I have 15 yrs. of experience in the wholesale plant nursery business, and have served in a variety of positions. I started at Hines Wholesale Nursery in Irvine Ca., a 600-acre nursery. It was here where I learned most of my plants. At that nursery, I held several positions; from entry level planting to having a small crew and assembling plants for the canning crews. We needed to select three thousand plants per day and bring them to the five planting crews. In that position, not only was I learning plant names, but my eye was being trained to see small differences between plants with the same name. I learned that just like members of the same| family, 10 A P RI L plants 2018 vary. The foliage, color, overall vigor, and
how the plants grow can vary. I was responsible with my crew to select the best of the 1 gallon plant varieties for shifting up into 5 gallons. We were the front line for quality control, as well as the next year’s sales. It was a great job for a young guy anxious to learn more about the field of ornamental horticulture, while supplementing my experience with my degree in ornamental horticulture at night. What I learned in class at night, I often could apply the next day at work. My career continued, and I was promoted to several positions: houseplant division (3 acres), liner division where all the plants began (13 acres), and finally to the stock control manager at a smaller 200-hundred-acre site in Vacaville Ca. I oversaw inventory and determined when plants were sellable. I also managed what are called futures – this is when a salesman pre-sells plants. It was my job to set that inventory aside. Blocks of plants were often sold at 5,000 units at a time, and it was my job to keep a running inventory of what the 15 salesmen at this site sold. Aside from that, I was also responsible for quality control, checking all the outgoing orders. I would walk the shipping docks to be sure all plants going out represented our best quality. We had the highest customer satisfaction of all three nurseries. From the 200-acre nursery, I down-sized acreage, but my responsibilities increased until I became a wholesale nursery grower. Working directly under the owner, I was responsible for many things such as taking cuttings, seeding, and planting schedules. BEFORE cost the nursery revenue. The nursery was divided into ornamentals, growing 1/gal, 5/gal., 15/gal. and 24” box specimen trees, house plants and annual color. Because annual color and houseplants have quicker turn over, much of the owner’s time is spent in those two divisions, so it was up to me to make sure the outdoor division ran smoothly. I basically ate, slept and spoke plants. I went out on my own to start my own landscaping company because the owner and my philosophy on how to grow plants conflicted. He did not like to prune or space the plants, whereas from past experience and knowledge, I knew I would turn out a superior plant with those key steps. I understood the owner’s philosophy, we just had different beliefs and experiences. I had developed a reputation in the industry and was not willing to jeopardize that, so I set my sights on a new nursery to work for. Through the interview process, and traveling to different nurseries from Northern CA. to Oregon, I ended up deciding I did not want to move my family; thus, Executive Care Landscape was started in 1989. Through all my experiences, I could not have had better training to equip me for any challenges I would face in my new field of landscaping. I could comfortably landscape from Hawaii to New York and all locations in-between. My knowledge has allowed me to offer our clients plants, walls water features, paver patios, fire pits, and seating areas. As you look at our work, be mindful of the variety of plants that we incorporate within each job. As paints are to a fine artist, so plants are to me. cussed in detail in the next edition. Also, as we start with TheHomeMag, it is our intention to show a before or mid picture of the job, and an after picture. We will discuss the job, so you can appreciate and understand the challenges and the solutions that are required for artful and beautiful yards. I would like to end with tips for our vegetable garden because I am a big advocate of growing one’s own food. If you garden, about two weeks prior to planting, you should lightly till the soil and follow it with a good application of organic fertilizer which contains mycorrizhae.
