Sizing Down a Large Yard, Part III Welcome to our article for the August edition of TheHomeMag. It has been a hot summer, so hopefully by the time this article circulates we will have cooler temperatures. The plants will be fine if cared for properly during the heat. We have continued to landscape with little to no loss of plants. To understand the plant is to know that many of the plants have a thin waxy covering over the leaves that help them deal with the heat. Plants do much better once they are planted, rather than when they are in the plastic can. This is assuming that they are being watered sufficiently, and that the drip irrigation is working and has been updated since install. When I was growing plants, I would routinely pull the cans off the plants to inspect the health of the roots. It was interesting to note that the side of the can that faced the sun had no roots, as they all grew to the inside, which is the cooler side of the can. In landscaping, we are actually doing the plants a favor by planting them in the soil, a much better abettor of heat, especially when mulch is added as opposed to rock which I am seeing more off. Rock is hot and and traps the heat way into the night. The only exception would be lava rock, which is porous and 10 | AUGU ST 2018
dissipates the heat. For our article this month, I am going to limit my words to be able to show via the pictures how beauty can be very simple, and yet very inviting. Prior to our work, there was a lawn in place of the pool and a decomposed granite walkway that went around the whole backyard. This was replaced with a flagstone walkway, and a flagstone pathway. A walkway is a much more formal endeavor. It is similar to a cement sidewalk except it is made from flagstone. A pathway is much more natural like a foot path, but instead of a dirt path, flagstone is used. Both styles were employed here. The color scheme for the flagstone came from the existing patio, which is not seen. In trying to match the grout color of the existing patio which was soiled and had faded, it made the new grout look a little strong, so it will need some time to fade. However, this is a good example of the challenge it is to match an old hardscape to a new hardscape. Colors fade and become soiled and are especially noticed when new product is put up against them. Because of this, I will often recommend a complimentary hardscape such as pavers or flagstone against an aged cement patio provided it is in good condition. Otherwise, redesigning the hardscape is preferred. In this case, aside from some fading their patio was in good condition so this was the best solution. In talking to Benjamin and Kathleen, we decided that it would be best to have a flagstone walkway from the upper patio to the pool, where two could walk side by side. When setting flagstone as a pathway, it is important to note that it needs to be set on top of road for stability, and because SAC R A Mbase E N TO.TH EHOMEM AG.CO M
the yard is so hilly, we chose shredded cedar as our mulch. The fibers bind together better, so this type of mulch is the better choice for slopes. The pictures selected are of the upper part of the landscape, above the pool. The area below the pool was shown last month, and still needs time to grow before it shows well via pictures. This back area looks much better in person, though it was less of a priority because it was out of the general view. However, it was still important, but because of being less of a priority and having more space to landscape, it allowed me to landscape a little differently. I was able to use plants that mature larger and space them out a bit farther reducing some plant cost. With such a big yard, the use of client’s finances should be prioritized according to the importance of each area; savings are always appreciated. At times during a project, things happen that help us to do a better job. The dry stream in the side yard, which is also the entrance to the backyard, adds a real nice effect to this area. The stream bed was not planned. This was a winter job, and fortunately prior to planting the plants for this area, we had a couple strong rains. The front of the yard is also sloped, so a lot of rain came rushing into the back yard under the fence carrying dirt and twigs and it all ran into the pool. Therefore, we had to brain storm and we came up with the dry stream bed that would help conduct the surface water into a lower drain, however we also added a drain under the stream bed that caught the water before it went into the backyard.
