Problem Solving Welcome to our August edition of TheHomeMag. As always, I appreciate the calls and the well-spoken words about our articles. It is encouraging, so thank you. It always seems that the articles are due when I have so many other things in the fire, but the deadline is the deadline. I do enjoy sharing the challenges and the outcome of those challenges as we attempt to capture the wishes of our clients through landscaping while working with the uniqueness of their yard. For Gary and Brenda’s yard, something significant occurred that caused them to rethink their landscape. Gary and Brenda’s house is on a corner, and several months ago, they were woken up by a loud crash to find that a car had spun out of control and crashed into the side of their garage. When I arrived, the garage had been put back together, so I did not actually see the damage. I only saw the need to complete the stucco finish. However, that incident got them thinking about safety, and since their landscape was the original, it was a good time to upgrade with an emphasis on safety. I believe for all corner homes this definitely needs to be a consideration. It always happens to the other person until the other person becomes us. Being a 16-year-old landscape, the style was mostly lawn and some plants (see before picture). With the exception of a very mature Blue Atlas Cedar, the rest could be removed. Gary Brenda2019 were wondering what a new landscape would look 12 | and AUGUST
like. They knew they didn’t want the weekly maintenance of a lawn, but Gary liked the look of lawn, so he was willing to consider synthetic turf. This was a big step for Gary as he was not a big proponent for “fake” things. He was more of a naturalist. Also having dealt with a sloped lawn, Gary knew that he wanted the synthetic turf to be leveled, but he wasn’t sure how much would look right. To make the synthetic turf level, we would need to build a small retaining wall. I needed to know how long to make it and where it would start. After asking several questions, I felt I knew them well enough to make an initial design. I use upside down paint and literally paint out the design on their yard where they can see the size of various structures in relation to their home. I knew that Brenda liked things nice and neat, and Gary liked things as nature would have them. Envisioning designs comes easily for me, but for many of my clients they need to see this “artwork” on their yard. By using this method, I am more sure of my measurements, as opposed to just having it on paper. I incorporated a wall for Brenda midpoint in the yard which would also allow us to level the turf. Knowing that Gary liked the look of turf, I made the synthetic turf sizable, which allowed us to make the wall long enough to be a real eye catcher. Brenda liked the “straight line, clean look” the wall added to the landscape. It fit the house well. For the corner, I painted out several locations where large boulders would go to add safety to the corner. The wall turned out very neat, clean and orderly looking, it had Brenda’s name all over it. The combination of synthetic turf and the natural part of the landscape looked good, it gave the yard a super nice appeal. All the features, softscape and hardscape caused the yard to pop. Now let’s talk about walls. When it comes to building walls, there are three basic directions one can go. Stone Veneer is the priciest, yet very beautiful. BEFORE already have texture to them are the most affordable and many of my clients like them. I always start with these, and if the client likes them then we just saved at least 30% percent on the cost of the wall. We can always spend more money, but at least the client can see the different ranges of cost for each type of wall. In discussing the block selections, both Gary and Brenda really liked the Brissa style stackable block with its clean lines and custom finish look. The next decision to be made was the type of synthetic turf to use. Brenda let Gary make this decision. He selected a very nice high-quality turf that is as close to real as you can get. Unless you want to golf on it and want a shorter lawn, there are really only two selections that I recommend. There is a synthetic turf that is designed for pets, and the one we used here for Gary. The pet one is not quite as green; however, the main difference is that it is a “wash through” design allowing you to wash away animal urine and waste (once picked up). It is very important to be aware of this difference. You give up some wow factor by using the pet turf, but if pets are part of the family, or the neighboring family of dog walkers, this is the synthetic turf you will want to use. We now had to decide on the plants. By now you know I am a big plant guy. You can spend a fortune in hardscape and pick just ordinary plants or choose the wrong combination of plants and your whole design will fail. Certain plants will not pop, yet it costs the same as the right ones. For this decision, I invited our clients to walk Green Acres with me so I could explain, teach and show them the plant combinations that we will be using in their yard. Normally by this time, our clients have calmed down and are now enjoying the process of transforming their yard into something uniquely beautiful and uniquely theirs. For most people taking on a landscape project is tough. It’s like trying to do a job that you are not trained for, yet the last thing you want to do is make a mistake. it can add usefulness and fun to family time, pleasant surroundings that add enjoyment, or just a place to hang out. So, though this is a big deal, it is what we do. We have done this hundreds of times for many clients. We all have our gifts, and it is our pleasure to use our gifts to bring enjoyment to our clients. Gardeners – we are in the home stretch for our summer crops. Hopefully the season has yielded a good crop, and you have enjoyed the fruit of your labor. I like to let September be a time where the ground is replenished by adding organic fertilizer with mycorrhizae and letting it rest. Adding a couple tubs of worms is also good.
