Making Hills Useful
Welcome to our February edition. I have written several stories on hill landscapes and they follow a similar pattern. As mentioned in November’s edition, cutting back the hill to gain more level space is important. If there is sufficient level space, then this phase can be skipped. We always do terracing next, but as I explain to clients, it is not necessary. There are plants that grow on hillsides. They tend to be rangy, but they do cover the hill. For a more attractive and tamed landscape, terracing does reduce the steepness of the hill, making it easier to work on. Also, when you terrace, you can bring in more topsoil blend, which allows us a wider variety of plants to choose from since hills tend to have rocky soil. Overbuilding the irrigation is critical. Pushing water uphill is tough, so we prefer to take the irrigation to the hill and run the lines from there. Correct mulch that will stick to the hill is critical, so the degree of the slope, once terraced, determines the mulch that can be used. These are the main components to hill landscapes, and are points that I covered in November’s edition, and just as a side note all our articles are posted on our website under publications. Prior to starting any landscape, and especially with hill landscapes the question that needs answering is what will be the use or function of the hill? taining area? We have done both. With this landscape, we created a sitting/entertaining area, but this is the first-time homeowners requested it in front of the hill. Initially the plans were to set the patio back into the hill, but it would have been only half the width and length of the current patio. As my client Mimi thought about the proposed one, she decided that the patio would not be large enough and the cost to increase it would push the project out of reach. So, a more affordable route was to create a raised patio on level ground which could easily be reached and made large enough. I teasingly told Jim and Mimi that we were going to crown them King and Queen of their own castle, especially since grey was the color of choice. It took about 3 1/2 weeks just to cut back the hill (approx. 15’ft.), build the two terraced walls and the raised patio. Building the terraced walls from block is tough because the men must bring the block uphill block by block, there is no wheel barrow type equipment that can help us. It is not so with lumber where once the posts are cemented in, two men can build about a hundred feet of wall in a day. Lumber in that respect is much more cost effective, however it is not permanent like block. It will age, fade and splinter so it needs to be oiled at least once a year, and twice is even better. Also, when considering lumber, one must think that in about fifteen to eighteen years it will need to be replaced. With the landscape being mature it will be more challenging to dissemble and assemble a new wall. So as in all of life, there are tradeoffs. Block is easily thirty to thirty - five percent more expensive, but lasts forever, and wood is fast in comparison but needs to be redone. Therefore, the first decision that needs to be made is are you in your forever home, or do you plan to move within ten years or so, and are you ok with the SAC maintenance wood Ewill The M next R A M E N TO.TH H Orequire? DURING question is how much of the hill if any do you want to cut back? This will depend upon the need and use of level ground. The farther back we cut into the hill, the taller the block wall needs to be and the more it is viewed, though we can break it up with plants. Also, as the wall becomes higher, the choices of block we can use are fewer. The blocks are rated. Some can go two feet up, some three, fewer at four and beyond that a permit is required. The type of block to be used is important so we know how much of the hill can be cut back. The picture shows Stone Wall II, a Basalite product. All the main block suppliers have several versions of stackable blocks, all with a cement texture. If this type of look is good, then you just saved a lot of money. The next alternative requires more labor and more material cost. Cinder block walls faced with cultured stone or stone veneer are very attractive but cost considerably more. The only motive for going this route is one’s preference, for they both retain. This landscape is new, and some plants are deciduous in the winter so the blocks really stand out. In about two to three years the wall will not be so “present.” The plants will grow and soften the wall, so spending a fortune on a wall is not necessary. Once the look of the wall is determined then the building begins. To minimize redoing things, especially with hill landscapes it is important to know what it is wanted. The biggest cost, aside from the type of wall, is to consider if a terraced patio is wanted. With a terraced patio comes stairs (wood or block), and the main reason for a terraced patio is for the view. Therefore, consider how frequently you plan to use it. Creating one is about a quarter to a third of the work, which adds expense. In summary, remember with a hill landscape everything takes about twice as long, and hence are harder to estimate. lights. Day or night, hills add such a presence to the backyard. Gardeners, if you are growing a winter garden, we have about a month to two to enjoy and harvest. Keep the vegetables producing by applying half rate organic fertilizer monthly and make sure to keep the garden clean of dead plant matter. Molds and fungus love dead matter and in the moist environment of winter they can easily spread to the good crops. Until next month, Good Gardening.
