A Job Done Right Welcome to June issue and our final issue regarding Ross and Lori’s yard. It has been enjoyable to share with you what can be done with what some might consider a non-useful backyard. Ross and Lori’s yard is on the smaller side of backyards, and then it is a sloped yard as well, which normally would make it less useful. Of course creativity and need can always help us figure out a way to make it useful. However, making slopes useful takes more effort and time than normal yards, and hence the cost is also more. I say this especially for those of you contemplating on buying a house with a sloped yard. Obviously, the degree, width and depth of the slope contributes to the cost of landscaping, however it is a cost factor that needs to be considered. They are beautiful in completion because of the different levels of terracing that can be done along with “hiding places” and pathways that can be created as we have done with the steps and the Japanese Maples that give privacy to the sitting area. There is the practical side of developing slopes that contributes to the cost. It has to do with carrying material such as block or lumber for terracing, soil to fill the planters, boulders are always fun and of course the plants which there placement is done completely different than in normal yards. Hauling/ carrying all these materials either up the hill or taking care that they don’t roll down the hill and you with it, all takes extra man power and time. The irrigation is also done completely different than level yards which a very common flaw that I find when we are redoing hill landscapes and the reason why many plants fail. In short it takes the legs of Samson, some serious thought, and TIME to complete a slope landscape but done right, it will bring you enjoyment for years to come. Please keep all this in mind as I am seeing an increase of new homes with slopes. 4

The last two editions have showed Ross and Lori’s landscape at different levels of maturity. For the June issue, I want to feature it in its present state (here and on the cover) completing six years of growth. It is beautiful, restful, and the clients look forward to going out into their backyard. It is very rewarding for me to keep tabs on our landscapes and see how they are maturing. I especially enjoy seeing how the trees mature, they are less predictable. Plants and shrubs maturing rates are fairly consistent to the Western Garden Book. The sizes are displayed in a range e.g., 3’ft. to 4’ ft. or 8’ft. to 10’ft. for the larger shrubs. The way I read the ranges, especially when it’s a new variety is the plant will definitely mature to the lower range within 3 to 5 years and eventually grow to its final height depending the sunlight. The sunlight tends to grow the plant more compact or “tight.” If a full sun plant is planted in a sun/shade combination, it will respond differently depending upon the amount of shade. If the shade is only 2 hours or less a day, the plant will look softer, but its height will not be impacted. If there is more shade, the plant will adjust and lengthen as it stretches for the sunlight and will grow faster and more likely exceed the specs set for it. I am pleased with the landscape, the selection and balance of leaf colors, textures, flowering times, etc., have matured well. Until next time —Good Gardening
