Creativity Welcome to TheHomeMag edition for May. As mentioned in last month’s edition, this is our second month writing in TheHomeMag. Many of you have been following us via House2Home. Please continue to enjoy our articles now in TheHomeMag. In our first edition, I spoke about what we had to offer - the distinguishing aspects of Executive Care Landscape. I also gave a synopsis of my past work experience in the wholesale nursery industry. In that world, I was exposed to and worked with many different types of plants. I could have stayed in the wholesale nursery field, as I thoroughly enjoyed growing plants. However, being draw to the beauty that could be created in landscaping with the proper use of plants I left the growing field and started Executive Care in 1989. In 1992, the business went incorporated and our landscape contracts started with commercial maintenance improvements where I had the opportunity to refine my skills. That is the history of Executive Care, now to introduce you to Ross and Lori’s yard. In this issue, the pictures are truly before pictures. Last month, the pictures were mid points of the job. You will notice in these pictures that you can see the beginnings of the spa area and on the other side you can see the general slope of the yard via the 14 of | the M AYyard 2018
lawn. In viewing the yard and considering their requests of my clients, it required some creative thinking on my part. Ross and Lori requested to have a patio up by the house and an orderly means to get to the spa. They also requested a fire pit with a small patio. I knew I needed to terrace the yard. In considering the flow of traffic, the solution that made the most sense was to put the fire pit close to the spa and build steps to the spa. Repairing the existing waterfall to have the sound and view of a waterfall made the area unique. The waterfall coupled with the ambience of the fire pit, and the enjoyment of the spa made this side of the yard the entertaining area. I knew Lori enjoyed reading, so the other side of the yard could be the meditative side of the yard. It could also serve as a place to have meals or simply enjoy the yard and the lake view while having coffee. The only concern for this side was they would be in full view of people walking along the side of the lake. I needed to create privacy without blocking the view of the lake. The spa side had a large Redwood tree behind it that created ample privacy, therefore this side was taken care of. A bonus to the spa construction was that the builders gave me the beginnings of the terracing which we would develop further. The right side of the yard with the lawn also had its challenges. Ross no longer wanted the lawn because of the slope. Mowing and keeping it watered correctly was a hassle. I had to redesign this side so that it complimented the other side. In an earlier meeting, we had discussed landscape themes and they requested an Asian theme landscape. This helped and gave me ideas for this side. I decided to split the lawn’s width into two distinct but complimentary features. We would create a dry stream bed with boulders and color spots as well as a quieter water feature at the top of the dry stream bed. Next to it would be an ornate gravel area encircled with bamboo edging. The bamboo edging would be cut in various sizes and used to encircle the gravel egg-shaped Centered it would SAC R A M Earea. be planted Zephyr Lilies with Dwarf Mondo grass in between the bamboo edging and the Zephyr Lilies. From here, I would continue to landscape the rest of yard designing mounds and adding moss rock boulders for an added natural feel. I would order two larger sized Japanese Maples to provide the privacy while maintaining an open view of the lake. With the added ambience of the lake, the landscape would convert the backyard into a staycation paradise for my clients. This work was done about 5 to 6 years ago, so the pictures you are seeing are about 4 years into its growth. I receive comments from clients, discouraged by their prior landscape experience, saying that the landscape looked nice when it was new, then as it got older plants overgrew making it necessary to remove them. Overgrowing and crowding is not a problem we have. The only exception to this is when I am trying out a new variety. In those cases, I tell the clients I am experimenting with this plant but based on the breeder’s label, it should fit into our landscape. This is the only way to truly know how the growth pattern will turn out. I stand by my work, and if the plant doesn’t stay true to what the label says, I will replace it for free. This happened with a Gaura Belleza Dwarf, a perennial that according to the label was to grow to 18” tall and wide. After 4 months, it grew to 2 ½ - 3 ft. tall and wide. We removed them and replanted acceptable substitutes. The plant kingdom varies, as location and climate play a big part in a plants growth patterns. There is no substitute for proper maintenance. We provide this service to our clients. We do not do the weekly mowing however, we offer a bi–annual or more if necessary care for the landscape. The frequency depends on how active the client wants to be in their yard. landscape is not that difficult if you know your plants, understand sunlight patterns, and have a couple creative bones in your body. For all of you gardeners, I would like to offer a few tips. May is prime garden growing time. May is also the start of pesky aphids. Fortunately, we got several nights below freezing this last winter which helped keep the aphid population down. Our pesticides are limited to natural oils such as Neem, or you can knock the aphids off with water. There are internet recipes that I have read as well. Keeping the vegetables healthy by proper watering and fertilization, as well as hosing the aphids off in the mornings (evening rinsing will produce powdery mildew) are the best means of defense. Keep in mind, aphids are organic, a few in our salads won’t kill us. Until next time – Good Gardening.
