Smart Space Welcome to our October edition. I appreciate all the comments I received regarding September’s article. It was a fun and challenging job. The only concern I have when showing a large job is that prospective clients think that is all we do. I just recently spoke to a past client that wants to downsize, and she really hesitated to ask if I would do her next yard because the job I showed in September was so large and her next yard would be just the opposite. My response was everyone pays the same daily rate - some for 5 days and some for 50 days. This is a common response from prospective clients, and so I infrequently show the larger jobs. This month’s landscape is more focused on the average to smaller yard. It is located in the southern borders of Auburn, and the homeowners were super pleasant to work with and for. They had moved into a home that was custom built for them. The front yard was landscaped - if you could call it that, and the backyard had only lawn. I have done many of these and most builders follow that typical format. They focus on the inside, and the landscape is basically whatever can get past the homeowner. BEFORE discussing both the front yard and backyard, so you can get a complete feel of the changes. In order to fit so much into one article, I will have to limit my words and cover only the key requests and challenges. Let’s start with the challenges. The landscape was done completely wrong—from drainage, to irrigation, to design. I would add grading, but supposedly custom home builders are not under obligation to grade out the yard so that it drains from back to front like tract homes. This backyard had about 1/3 of it sloped so drastically that we had to correct it. We built a retaining wall in the far-left corner, and added at least twelve yards of topsoil blend to bring the yard all to one level. That’s a lot of soil for a smaller yard. Next, the drainage was at the surface and barely worked. In a heavy storm, flooding would surely become an issue. We created a horse shoe affect, meaning that from either side of the yard, the water would move forward out to the street. However, in the front yard we added a dry stream bed and ran the drain below it. Instead of a solid pipe, we used a perforated drain so that the rain water could leach back into the ground. This would be great for the Acer Rubrum we planted in the front yard. When doing this, you have to use caution and create what I give the Hispanic race credit for - “A Burrito Effect.” In other words, you wrap the perforated drain in gravel with weed bloc as the “Tortilla.” Not very appetizing, but it does great in keeping the tree roots out of the perforated drain. After approximately 4 to 6 years if you do not do this, you will have a perforated drain line filled with tree roots and it’s a pain to correct because you must cut tree roots and there is a real hurting SAC RAM E N TO.TH E H Ochance M E M AGof .CO M

the tree. Going cheap is never worth it. It costs so much more to correct, and the home owner is not even aware most of the time (hence why I write). The irrigation was incorrect because not enough sprinklers were used to cover the lawn, and archaic nozzles like I have seen at my grandfather’s house were used. This is wasteful use of irrigation. There is not one good thing I can say about the landscape, front or back. The house was very nice, although Dorothy told me that they had to have the builder come out several times to correct things. In the end, the cost to repair the outside was steep, and it was not right that my clients had to pay it. My clients and I requested a meeting with the builder, and I basically told him his outside work was careless and showed a degree of unprofessionalism that I had not seen in years. I also let him know that I was going to report him to the Contractors Licensing Board if he didn’t pay the cost for repairs, and he and/or his subs, would not be welcomed back to correct it. They had their chance and blew it. He eventually repaid the homeowners what they paid me to correct it. Buyer beware is a good thing to keep in mind when going custom. Just like with choosing landscapers, do your homework. There is so much to talk about, however design needs to be my next topic. Look at the before pictures and know that for the backyard, privacy and beauty were equally needed. In the front yard, curb appeal and shade from the western exposure were the focal point. quests and more were accomplished, and will continue to be accomplished as the landscape matures. Lastly, we landscape year around, even in the colder months. As I mention at the first of summer, the ground is the best insulator for the plants, not the plastic can. In the summer, the ground is cooler, and in winter, the ground is warmer, especially with the bark or mocha lava rock over the top. Gardeners, you should have your fall/winter crops in the ground by now. Remember to have cold frames ready even though there is still time before temps drop to that degree. Good Gardening.
