Creating an Entrance Welcome to September’s edition. With school now in session, the back to school routine is the norm for most of us, including some grandparents. Our household is now on a routine because we are helping our eldest daughter raise our granddaughter, as she has recently started a new business and her hours are extensive. When it comes to landscaping, routine is not a welcomed practice. Since each yard and client are unique, the need to be creative is ever present, and this month’s landscape is no exception. Initially, I was grateful for the opportunity to create curb appeal in a big way. The opportunity to work on such a grand scale is rare, so the job was very welcomed. I always enjoy challenges to see what I can learn, and what more we can do as a company. The home itself sits way back on the property, and so the entrance is long. Fortunately, the owners are in the rock business, and were able to provide materials for me to work with that are not normally available in the rock yards. If you study the before picture, there is really nothing to look at. It’s basically a field with a road through it, leading to the house and garage. However, a blank canvas is an open canvas begging to be created upon, and so we did. The material that they provided was beautiful, especially in the application of what we were going to - building2018 a free-standing stack wall with columns. A 10 use | itSfor EP TEMBER
AT 4 YEARS key request our clients had was their desire to have the entrance lined with Olive trees. This excited me because the stone would go great with the Olive trees, as well as with an overall Mediterranean themed landscape. Our clients also requested the entrance to be similar to the entrances of Wineries. Having been in Napa and toured a few wineries, I had a good idea of the overall impression they were looking for. The last thing I needed to know was the “feel” my clients wanted as they came up their entrance. I needed to know how dense they wanted the Olive trees to be planted. This was a hard question for them to answer, so I took several distances and explained what they would see in eight to ten years. The closer the trees are placed, the more one would have the feeling of Old World with everything being overgrown, etc., and they loved that. However, with such density, sunlight would be reduced and the current plantings, which were full sun, would probably need to be replaced with shade plants. Doing the job twice was not a welcome thought, so we decided that a twenty – five foot spread between the trees would be a good compromise between Old World and practicality. From these requests and decisions, I was able to determine the materials needed, and complete the estimate. Before anything could happen, we would need truckloads of topsoil blend. The natural grade of the land was quite a bit lower than the road itself, so it took about fifteen trucks and trailers to fill the planter bed areas. This is approximately 490 yards of topsoil blend, which is a lot of soil. While the trucks where stock piling the soil next to the would-be planters, we were installing the irrigation. When it comes to irrigation, I always tend to want to overbuild it. The 30 or so Olive trees would have their own irrigation valves, so we could water them deeply, but e AG.CO plants also SAC R A M E Ninfrequently. TO.TH E H O MTh EM M
BEFORE would be divided into 8 sections, with each valve watering 1/8th of the total plant count, and with each plant receiving two emitters. When I go on appointments, I usually see only one or two valves watering the whole backyard, where two or three are needed and only one emitter per plant. With this type of set-up, it’s no wonder why landscapes start looking old and tired. After completing this phase of the build, we were ready to start stacking the ledger stones and adding soil. It was a time-consuming process. It took a couple weeks, with five men -2 men on each wall to fit the ledger stones, and one man to back fill the planters with soil. However, once completed, it looked really good, even though it was just stone and dirt. It was beginning to transform the entrance. There comes a point in a job when the clients begin to catch your vision, and then the job really gets exciting. By now, my clients could begin to see their new entrance come to life. I was glad, however I knew adding the Olive trees and plants would take the entrance to a whole new level. In planting the plants, the Olives had to go in first followed by a selection of low maintenance Mediterranean- themed plants. These types of plants have lower watering needs however, Mediterranean style plants can be more rangy, e.g., Rosemary, and Lavender. Red roses also look great in this theme. As you look at the pictures, you will see approximately 50 different varieties of plants that make up the “painting,” as I like to call it. The plants are my paints, the earth my canvas, and creativity my best friend. The job was time-consuming, taking about two months in total, which I thought was good considering the complexity of stacking the wall, and having to “fit” the loose stones together. Once the plants where installed, a lot of drip irrigation was used followed by night lights and mocha brown bark. lights are simply gorgeous especially against the lighter underside of the Olive trees. The pictures shown, span over 4 years, the first one showing the install, and the last one, a more recent one that I took in June 2018. The growth is amazing, especially with the Olive trees. Some of the soil the owner got, came from horse farms. This concerned me initially, because being so raw, it can be hot, but we mixed it with topsoil and this took the heat level down a bit. The plants did well in it, and the Olive trees really thrived. With fall around the corner get ready to start your fall winter garden. Make sure to add a rich dose of organic fertilizer.
