Sizing Down a Large Yard, Part II Welcome to the Summer edition of TheHomeMag and our ongoing topic of sizing down large yards. Our clients, Benjamin and Kathleen had been planning their backyard remodel since last year, so it was a real pleasure to hear from them again. Their plan was for new landscape and a pool. When I met with them the second time, they had already selected Natural Designs to build the pool. I was grateful that they called me prior to the pool company breaking ground. As a designer, my interest is in the totality of the yard, and all the components of it, not just one. To be able to do this correctly, I need to know a little about my clients and their family - their likes and dislikes, and how they plan to use the backyard. It is also helpful to know their ages, how often they have friends or family over, etc. All of this information helps me to divide up the space and assign each feature the proper amount of area in the backyard. I’ve seen pools that take up the whole backyard with little room for anything else, and infrequently I’ve seen them too small which may have been a question of budget. I also see this situation with patio decks, be they cement, pavers or flagstone. I’ve seen them oversized, not only for the family’s practical usage but for the size of the yard, and I have also seen them too small. By Arthur Navarrette Executive Care Landscaping allocate the space and finances correctly, a responsibility I take very seriously. Discussing finances is the hardest part of my job. I do not expect my clients to know cost, as it’s not their field of expertise. It is especially important for me, albeit awkward, to let clients know when their budget comes under the cost of their wants. There is always a contractor that is willing do it for less, but the end-product will not be the same and the difference in cost over ten years will be insignificant, yet the enjoyment or lack of it will be significant. Short cuts that are taken to not exceed the budget will affect the appearance and duration of the work negatively. I would rather work in phases, and do it correctly, than take short cuts. Though the topic is the same this month, our approach will be completely different. Last month we used four specific landscape features to break up the size of the yard. We had a small portion of the yard dedicated to lawn, an oversized dry stream bed (which the landscape will grow into), and the new landscape. We left the perimeter of the existing landscape, which helped to minimize the oversized yard. All these features could be seen at the same time and within the same line of sight, which is key to why we took this approach. This month’s yard is not like that. Located in Auburn, the terrain of the backyard is on a slope and because of the elevation changes, some of the backyard is not visible. In landscaping this type of yard, we take each viewable section as the “whole.” We therefore create “landscape scenes”, or pieces of the same puzzle, that when walked and viewed in its entirety become one complete beautiful picture, just like a large puzzle. From the entrance gate to the patio, one looks down onto the pool, several feet below these points. In between the patio, walkway and pool are several colorful planters (see photo). duce you to the rest of the yard as the yard takes another drop-in elevation. By taking the invitation of the pathway and following it completely around, one gets a tour of what cannot be seen from the patio deck or the entrance. The theme here is completely different from the planters around the home (see photo). The planters there are designed for “curb appeal.� The use of contrasting colors, shapes and textures are employed among these planters, including one large pot with a Saucer Magnolia which when in bloom, has beautiful purplish tulip like flowers. There is also a practical use to this side (not shown). Most of the time when planting citrus or fruit trees, we plant them more towards the back of the property, which means in the winter, when the fruit is ripe, you need to travel a bit. Here you just exit the patio slider, walk a minute and the citrus trees greet you making it very convenient. Since this property is heavily influenced by native Oaks, it is nice to have the greenery close to the home. The ornamental effect of having the citrus ripe with fruit close to the home cannot be denied – it just looks nice. The pictures of the yard were taken two months after completion, so everything is relatively new, and like the dry stream bed in the prior article, this much smaller one is not only ornamental, but it serves to catch the rainfall from the front yard, which is also a hill. Unfortunately, there is not a before picture of the slope behind the pool prior to landscaping, but it was fairly steep having received much of the diggings from the pool. Once we re-distributed the excess soil, the boulders were placed in combinations from two to four groupings helping us to terrace the hill creating planters as well as giving the slope dimension and interest. trees. We took advantage of lighting up the mature Oaks as well as the Japanese Maples behind the pool. Along the pathway, we installed path lights, and by night time the combination of the two light types make the yard simply beautiful! As the landscape continues to mature, this will be a yard that will continue to bring our clients enjoyment for years to come, as our clients tell us of all our landscapes, be they big or small. Gardeners, our gardens are in full swing production. Be mindful of hot days as the sun can burn some of the vegetables. You will need to cover them with breathable shade cloth.
