Hidden Costs of Owning a Water Softener

Comparing Water Systems Buying a water softener, or any water system for your home can be tricky. With so many choices and so much conflicting information out there, how do you choose? Adding up the costs and doing a side-by-side comparison of water systems should be the first step. A water softener replaces healthy minerals with sodium ions, and does not remove chlorine or organic contaminants. Water softeners have an average service life of seven years and cost anywhere from $500 - $5,000. A consumer will need to buy salt for the system, as well as a
reverse osmosis filter (approximately $500) to filter the salty water that the softener produces. Reverse osmosis filter cartridges and membranes need to be changed annually, with an average cost of $200 per year or $2,400 every 12 years. Your annual salt costs could be up to an additional $400 per year. In addition to extra costs and the hassle of manually adding salt to your water softener system, the average consumer will dump around 1,920 pounds of salt into the waste stream annually. Over the course of 12 years, that is 23,040 pounds of salt
