Its 2017, and a time for new starts is upon us. How’s your new start going? January is over, probably one of the coldest and wettest months we have seen in years. Forgive me, but there were times I had to ask if I was really living in California. Come on!!! We pay enough to live in this state for its wonderful weather. Jokes aside though, I am truly thankful the drought, in most parts of the state, has broken.

My thought was to give them “the best vacation ever” – Take them on a 12-day cruise through the Caribbean over Christmas and New Year. In truth, I also hankered after the warmer weather and was dreaming of swimming in that crystal blue water again.
Well, what a start to the year, with so many changes happening all around us. Nothing remains constant. Life in today’s world forces us to adapt, learn, grow, or be left behind.
Well, to cut a long story short, they were with us for 7 weeks. Both arrived with coughs and colds from the strain of the trip, shortly followed by my wife Debbie, whom came down hard after not being sick in years. I rushed around giving everyone my wellness potion and when that didn’t work, the trusty Z pack came to the rescue. Every trip out the house had to be planned like a military operation: walking stick, wheelchair, meds, water, tissues, water bottles, jackets etc. Along the way, we often left things behind, having to make return trips to rescue essential items, making our outing even more eventful. The cruise was fantastic and the folks waxed lyrical every day, returning home with two extra suitcases of goodies, thousands of photos, and memories to tell all their friends for many, many months to come.
Super Bowl madness is upon us this weekend. What am I going to do with my Sundays now? No matter which team wins, just getting to the Super Bowl is such a huge achievement. Listening to both winning quarterbacks and coaches after their conference championships, it is interesting how they all say the same things. “Winning one game in this league is tough, never mind 16.” “It’s not about one player; it took all of us to get to this point.” “We all worked really, really hard to overcome each challenge that comes our way.” “Every team has its challenges; it’s about finding a way together.” “This is a special bunch of players and coaches that all respect each other.” “We are a family and family stick together.” Over the holidays, I brought my in-laws out from South Africa. It had been two years since we had seen them. Both are over the age of 75. Don, my father in law, has had numerous failed back operations that have left him shuffling around and in terrible pain. Plus, he has stage three Parkinson’s, a ghastly

They say the secret to happiness is giving. I know I learned just how hard it is to look after two aging parents. I truly had no idea. John Wooden talks about his secret to success and the 3 most important things in his life: Family, Faith, Friends, and in that order. I tend to agree with him. You can choose your friends, but not your family. They come with all sorts of challenges.
Having had to leave our family behind in 1997 to start our own adventure, Debbie and I soon discovered just how hard that was. Not only missing their company, but not having their support and guidance whenever we needed it. Throughout our earlier journey, my father in-law, Don, was always just a phone call way to be our mentor and guiding hand. (When you are in the opposite hemisphere, the time difference changes this.) During this trip, I saw that now I had to be the person who offered that hand to help him walk, and see the world. “You can’t live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you.” -John Wooden No matter who or where you are in life, we all need support. People in the work force need leaders and mentors to show them the way in business; Super Bowl teams need a collaboration of the best players and support crew to be a winning team. Brady or Ryan will not win if their team does not give them the protection and support they need; And every one of us, as parents and children, need our families. In this mixed up, challenging world. Remember with family, friends and love you can get thought anything. Have a fabulous month. Make every day your masterpiece.
