NKBA Competition Kitchen
The 2009 NKBA Competition Kitchen required the use of universal design with a focus on the aging family. The Arts and Crafts style was a prerequisite for the design aesthetic and was incorporated into the linear elements, beam work, rustic wood elements, and copper finishes. This kitchen design was recognized as one of the top 31 kitchens of 235 applicants in the 2009 NKBA Kitchen Competition.

Harrison Bathroom Renovation
The Harrison Master Bathroom Renovation focused on eliminating the outdated 1980s decor for an updated, serene space. By removing the previous disjointed bathroom layout, the new design highlights functionality and clean living. With the use of cream and white accompanying a pop of blue and chrome, the bathroom is a jewel within the home.

NICU Rooming in Room
The Rooming in Room at Athens Regional Medical Center in cooperation with the Lukas’ Fund required an update to provide a calming living space for parents with premature infants requiring hospitalization. Each senior group’s boards were utilized as visual aids in a fund raiser to provide the monetary backing required to renovate the Rooming in Room.

King Avenue New Construction In cooperation with J. W. York Homes, a sustainable construction company, groups were given one of four lots to create a spec home utilizing sustainable planning and products. The house design incorporated seamlessly with the surrounding early twentieth century homes wile utilizing J. W. York Homes’ craftsman aesthetic. To customize the house, Studio MLA integrated an innovative concept of the modern urban family by creating a multifunctional kitchen, dining, and living space option based on Universal Design principles. The centralized table serves as a focal point in which all activity in the home radiates while also providing a modern interpretation of a hearth incorporated in the cabinetry. A more traditional spec home layout was also created in order to accommodate J. W. York Homes’ desire for a home universal to all needs. The house is fully Universal to accommodate the concept of “aging in place.”

lukas’ room prototype Intuitive Restoration: An environment Embracing Your Journey The NICU Prototype was inspired by a Cotton, Inc scholarship competition incorporated with the Lukas’ Fund. The prototype infuses high concept and technology to create a fully intuitive space. Custom technology walls, chromatherapy walls, aromatherapy, music therapy, as well as art therapy are all incorporated to fully adapt to the visitor’s preferences. Interestingly, even with the elevated use of technology, the room’s neutral constant features provide a soothing and tranquil space for the visitor to heal during the stress of potentially losing a new born child. The curves of the space seem to embrace the visitor while the careful attention to detail ensures the most comfortable hospital experience that easily evolves from one visitor to the other.

Known for its ease of care, warmth, and natural breathability, cotton has been the primary day-to-day fabric choice for many people. From wedding dresses to medical scrubs, cotton provides not only a comfortable fabric, but a relaxing experience for its users. In addition to its natural properties, modern day finishes and technologies have made cotton stronger and more durable, significantlyimproving its usefulness in medical settings. While society has come a long way from the primitive cotton of our ancestors, the love for the natural wonder remains unchanged. Cotton continues to provide comfort and utility through many years of service.
