Why Vote For Us Why vote for us? Vote cooperation not confrontation if you want a productive Student Senate that is dedicated to you, the students. We are a diverse group of individuals that have fought for your best interests for the past two semesters and we aren’t ready to stop there. Elect us so that we can create a year of tolerance, innovation, and cooperation. Vote for us if you want a return to respect.Next year we are dedicated to putting the students back in the Student Senate. We will be seeking you out to find out
what we can do for you. Don’t think we don’t have some ideas of our own, it’s just that your needs are more important. Although, our ideas are rather good. A few of the things we would like to do are: host events that you will want to attend, get attendance up at sports games, always have a fully stocked food pantry, advance our community relations, and better recognize our veterans on campus. We have no doubt that we will be able to accomplish all of our goals alongwith all of yours. We are not
overconfident, but rather acutely aware of how the unfortunate circumstances this year have strengthened our motivation to createa prospering Student Senate that will better aid you. This is why we have united and decided to run together as, cooperation not confrontation. Vote: Victoria Ramos - Student Senate President Severin Kameni - Vice President Mark Almy - Treasurer Heather Orvis - Secretary Sasha Barnes - Senior Class President
Mohammed Fadlalla for Vice President
My name is Mohammed Fadlalla. I am running for Vice President of the Student Senate. I am confident that with my leadership abilities we will bring this Senate to a new level. I’m currently the Student Senate Secretary and the Vice President of Leadership for the Alpha Xi Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. As Secretary, I am responsible for keeping an accurate record of all Student Senate
meetings and carrying the correspondence of the Student Senate. As Vice President of Leadership, I am accountable for directing the chapter in the use of parliamentary procedure for meetings, overseeing all leadership activities and coordinating the preparation of the Leadership Hallmark Award entry. This academic year alone, I have served on numerous committees such as the Budgetary Review Committee, Ethics and Conduct Committee, Programming Board and sat on the Review Board. I am also a Certified Student Leader, a Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges
recipient, a member of the Group 200 for the SUNY Strategic Planning and a voting delegate for the SUNY Assembly. In addition, I was appointed as the Marketing Board Coordinator. As for volunteer work, I have assisted with various events on campus, as well as volunteer my office every Thursday from 11:00am – 2:00pm to ensure students a private and confidential session with the NOEP Coordinator. When the polls open on May 12, vote for me, a proven professional, who is ready to lead and will provide campuswide marketing and wellplanned trips and activities on campus.
position of student trustee because I believe I can be an effective advocate for the students of this college and if elected I will make myself easily accessible to the student body. I will be open to all comments, questions, and I will be willing to bring complaints to the board of trustees as well. I will not be an idle trustee member and I will always maintain a strict level of professional behavior. I will however be more than willing to make noise on behalf of the students whenever necessary.
Marc Almy for Treasurer Marc Almy for Treasurer. If elected, I will be looking out for the students money. Every student pays a $45 activity fee every semester adding up to more than $800,000. As soon as I get my licenses I have one client who will allow me to invest $250,000 on their behalf, and another client who will allow me to invest $500,000. Both clients said to me that, if I do well, they will one day allow me to manage all of their assets. I worked in construction for 14 years, for six of which I ran my own subcontracting business. I was responsible for payroll, taxes, and job proposals. Here are some of my qualifications:I read Wall Street Journal daily.I plan to attain my series 6 exam (sell mutual
funds).Series 5 exam (sell bond funds)Series 63 exam (401(k) rollovers, said company is up with 401(k) plans.Mortgage license (first mortgage, refinance mortgages and debt consolidation into one mortgage)life insurance license as well.I manage my own portfolio. So this summer will be busy for me, and I am working with a financial firm to help me attain these licenses. And they want me badly, a regional president of the financial firm has personally called me today to make sure that I am on board. It has been a pleasure to serve the students in the student Senate this year, and I look forward to making sure that your money doesn’t go to waste.

I am on both sides of the political process. A grassroots activist and a political person. I go along to get along and am also a warrior that fights for what he believes in. During the month of March I went to 4 protest’s, lobbied once, and spoke with key players of the political process. I
have used the bull horn countless times, and screamed at the top of my lungs. But I also have the ability to make a deal. So I hope I can win this position and better Hudson Valley and its student’s. I wish to better society and become a leader of civil rights and create trust in government. I firmly believe in serving the F.S.A to the best of my abilities. I wonder if HVCC has the ability to handle a maverick such as myself. I bid you with this quote never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life; define yourself. And if you allow that silence, our

During the Huck Finn Tournament, Weglarz bowled a close game against his opponent, Mike Neumann, with the help of his wicked left-handed hook. He displayed his dedication to the game here as well. The ending score was Neumann-188 to Weglarz-183. In the end, although Weglarz placed 3rd out of 4 players, he was awarded a $1000 prize. He will be graduating with the class of 2010 on May 22nd.

Fracalossi. Corrinna Ripps Schaming is the juror who chose the art on display. Fracalossi mentioned that students have to be enrolled in a Fine Arts class here at Hudson valley for their work to be considered. It is however open to the public for anyone to come and see the art work that is displayed. “Students in fine arts classes are encourage to send in a piece,” said Fracalossi. The gallery that was once located in the Marvin Library is now located in the Administration Building as it has been
held in the fall and spring semesters. According to Fracalossi there is actually a series of exhibits: about three professional ones and about two for the students. “It’s good for the student to see,” said Fracalossi. The current 2010 Juried Student Exhibit was setup by the students in the Gallery Management Practicum l class. The gallery hours are Tuesday 10:30a.m – 4p.m., Wednesday1-7p.m, Thursdays 10:30 a.m-4 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. -4 p.m., and Saturday 12 p.m-4 p.m.

As I sit at my computer to write this essay and, then, send it to a printer, I still can’t believe how easy the process is compared to my college days when I typed on an old manual typewriter, one erasable sheet of bond paper at a time. When I play tennis with my daughter’s modern, oversized, graphite racquet, I feel like I’m cheating; hitting a crosscourt backhand with her racquet is simple compared to trying to execute that same shot with my old, smaller, wooden racquet. And when I use my new, automatic-focus, 35 millimeter camera, I’m amazed that I ever took pictures the old-fashioned way by focusing the lens myself with the naked eye. Indeed, so many tasks in my life have become so much easier during the last 30 years, but writing,
this task, you would, first, have to explore your past to recall all the embarrassing moments in your life and, then, choose one to share with your teacher and classmates. You may be willing to tell them about wearing two different colored socks to school one day, but you might not want to reveal that you were once caught cheating in junior high. As you struggle to make that particular decision, you encounter another difficult aspect of writing: the emotional aspect. Writing is emotional. Even though you may not want not to write about the cheating episode, you know that story is so much more interesting than the story of the mismatched socks. Consequently, you will have to confront your reasons for not wanting to write about the cheating episode. Are you still embarrassed about the experience and uncomfortable sharing it with others? Or, are you afraid that if your instructor and classmates know you cheated previously, they may suspect you of cheating again? In addition, as you write, you may have to re-live that embarrassment, and, perhaps, consider your
original motivation. Did you cheat because it was easy, and you thought you could get away with it? Or, were you really desperate, and you needed to pass that test to stay on the basketball team, to maintain a certain academic average, or to secure permission from your parents to attend a concert? Whatever your motivation, you will probably find yourself explaining not only why you cheated and how you got caught but also what you learned from the experience. Writing is creative. Finally, you’ll also want to tell the story in a creative way that is both interesting and entertaining for your readers. Sure, you could probably tell the condensed version in a short essay that includes the basic details and offers an easy lesson about honesty. Most readers, though, have read that general story before. Thus, to really engage your readers, you’ll have to do more. You’ll have to put your readers in that classroom and make them feel the sweat rolling down the inside of your armpits as you nervously consult your cheat sheet or look over the shoulder of another student. In addition, you’ll want to keep your readers

unfortunately, is still difficult. Am I saying that writing hasn’t gotten any easier since I graduated from Siena College in 1973? No. In fact, I find writing much easier today because I have lived longer, I have experienced more, and I have written more. Yet, even though writing is easier than it used to be, the process is still hard – and will always be hard – for three reasons: writing is personal, writing is emotional, and writing is creative. Writing is personal. Writing isn’t like math where everyone is expected to come up with the same answer to a problem by using the same method. For example, a writing instructor may ask the class to write about an embarrassing moment. Obviously, all the answers will be different, and the process may also vary from one writer to the next. If you were assigned

The Student Senate meeting of May 3rd devolved into a shouting match several times. And this isn’t a figurative description: two adult men were shouting each other down over business procedures. Compounding the travesty is the identity of these two otherwise esteemed gentlemen: Student Senate President Clifton M. Dixon and Director of Student Life Louis Coplin II. Now, while voting machines may be a serious issue, is it worth tossing aside all semblances of civility and respect? Or perhaps the May 10th meeting, where the Senate didn’t have enough people to vote on club budgets and indeed, two members entered the room then left moments later? As a result of this callous blow-off
by one Senator and one member of the Executive Board, club budgets and other actions couldn’t be voted on in a timely fashion. Again, where is the respect for the office? Granted, respect within the Student Senate is something of a precious rarity but perhaps it could be feigned in front of the voting public? Even to keep up appearances that the Senate is a functional, working body instead of a fractured, shattered collection of people with their own agendas that are starting to draw up ridiculous party lines? No? All right then. Perhaps the problem lay in who we choose to represent the students at this level. No, that’s not quite right. Most of the current Senators—and many of the former ones—do try to do what’s right by students. Perhaps it’s the fact we use an inherently corrupt form of government and then wonder how it gets
corrupted. The American Senate—the one in Washington D.C., that is—has been known for being slow, acrimonious, and corrupt for over two hundred years. Democracy in general tends to de-evolve into corruption, avarice, and sometimes outright hatred between groups. Just look at the political scene for the past thirty years. Republicans and Democrats have steadily become more radicalized, screaming and shouting worse and worse allegations against each other. In essence—though he may not appreciate the comparison—President Dixon is not unlike President George W. Bush: he’s trying to do what he feels is right—what he views as cleaning up the system—and all of his opponents are dragging out attacks from the personal to his performance to his manner of leading. And each round simply becomes more poisonous and toxic. Of course, like Bush, he’s made mistakes, which are then eagerly pounced upon, magnified and exaggerated by those with a vested interest in seeing him fall. That’s not to say his opponents aren’t without merit. They do have the points where they are correct, but the ringleaders
often fall short by violating the same principles they demand be upheld, such as civility, respect, and proper qualifications. So what’s the solution? Well, in my humble opinion... scrap the whole bloody mess. Even just to experiment a bit. After all, many dictatorships are extremely efficient and effective in their early stages. The good ones ride in on a wave of popular support. Perhaps we need just a little taste of the other side, so we can appreciate how to properly run a democratic function. To begin, we must sweep away the weak and pathetic titles of democratic systems. No longer must the presiding officer be a mere President of the Student Senate. Perhaps Emperor would be better... or Empress if formerSenator Ramos’ bid for leadership wins out. Just because it’s a dictatorial setup doesn’t mean it can’t be open-minded and politically correct. Similarly, the Vice President can be the grand vizier or executor/ executrix. Treasurer and Secretary would maintain their nicely functional titles. As for the Senators, HVCC could possibly maintain some kind of imperial senate, in the manner of Ancient Rome. Or, instead of a Senate
in suspense by providing key details slowly. How did you get caught? How did you react? Did others in the class know? What were the consequences? How did the experience change you? Telling a story verbally is easy by comparison. As a verbal storyteller, you can observe your listeners’ reactions and facial expressions, and you can adjust accordingly. Or, if you leave out a detail or two, your listeners can interrupt you to ask a question. They can even prod you to get to the point more quickly. When you’re writing, however, you have to provide details, you have to narrate logically, you have to anticipate questions and answer them, and you have to use your words – and your words alone – to hold on to a reader who may be easily distracted. Did I mention that writing is a difficult task? The Writing Center is located on the upper level of the Marvin Library, and you can go to there for help at any stage of the writing process. Copyright 2010 © by Jim LaBate at Hudson Valley Community College. that actually mirrors the House of Representatives, there is a single official representing each program at the college, as well as certain other student interests. Each official will then have multiple votes depending on population and influence of the program or interest they represent. Without twenty people around to scream at the executive officers and adviser panel, might not meetings go a bit more smoothly? And if members of the Senate—former or current—are balking at this article, the question is: what choice do you give us? Petty power struggles over positions that will last scarcely another week? Shouting and screaming over meaningless matters? Witty insights such as “Bylaws your face”? This is what the student body elected? How much longer the administration, FSA, and the college’s business partners will be willing to deal with a Senate so heavily marred by such behavior? And the worst part is Senators who actually try—even those who speak out for reasons beyond personal dislike of whoever is speaking at the moment—get tainted by no fault of their own. Best of luck in the campaigns, and best of luck in reforming your ways. Hopefully, the next Hudsonian staff, instead of covering shouting matches, scandal, and strife, can report on the good done by the winners of this upcoming election.

Insights Starcraft II: Heaven’s Devils By Jesse Carozza Insights Editor An absolute must-have for StarCraft fans and a highly-suggested piece for any fans of science fiction, StarCraft II: Heaven’s Devils by William C. Dietz is arguably one of the best military sci-fi books since Robert Heinlein’s Starship Troopers. Technically speaking, the main characters are a young James Raynor and Staff Sergeant/Private/Sergeant (it’s complicated) Tychus Findlay. For those of you a bit shaky on the names, Mister Findlay is known for his immortal words in the StarCraft II trailer, “Hell... it’s about time.” The book opens with Raynor driving in a fuel convoy as a teenager. Reckless driving and a minor accident results in a fist-fight with a bully. Fuel is expensive due to rationing, caused by the Guild Wars. Shortly after, a recruiter from the Terran
Confederacy convinces young Raynor to enlist in the Terran Marine Corps. His major motivation is a hefty signing bonus—due to the Confederacy being
at war with the Kel-Morian Combine—that will pay off his parents’ rising taxes and other costs due to the war. Meanwhile,
PAGE 8.
Vol. 57 Issue 25 May 13, 2010 Staff Sergeant Tychus Findlay is busy conning the Confederacy out of any surplus war booty he can. However, forced to participate in a terror mission that he’d been told was a raid against legitimate military targets, he beats his commanding officer unconscious before began restrained and arrested. For his crime, he is stripped of his rank and forced to serve three months in a military prison. While there, he kills a sadistic prison guard and escapes blame. Raynor, fresh from boot camp, and Findlay, fresh from prison, are ultimately assigned to the same squad on the planet Turaxis II. After they repel a surprise attack— and make off with some a few stolen trucks loaded with expensive military equipment—the squad starts to bond. From there, a combination of wartime intrigue, criminal enterprise, and wellwritten battle scenes makes this book impossible to put down. Of course, true to form, there’s a hefty dose of coarse language, bloody violence, and a touch of coitus interruptus. But, if you’re not squeamish or easily offended, then go out to the nearest bookstore. A solid 93 out of 100, and two thumbs up.
“I pi” Here’s a belated Pi Day poem from Lisa Ford, and my apologies for letting it slip through the cracks. --Patrick Sullivan, Creative Editor
One complex number, a letter, Help define a shape, to you all Greek. The decimal representation To never end, never repeat. I, pi, Describe: ubiquitous, transcendental Universal principle, Most important and fundamental. Algorithm infinitely iterates, Power series summation. Though convergence rate too slow, Tend to approach arbitrary approximation. Your attempt to square the circle Proven as yet, insoluble. Statistically, algebraically independent? You define me irrational.
My normality too an open question To the logic of your mathematical curiosity. Uncertainty in position and momentum, Conjecture of chaos, a plausibility. Earth’s closest approach to the Sun. Of co-moving bodies, merge, yield. Overlapping orbitals, of chemical bond, The charge force between; the field. Wave dynamics angular frequency, And of the permeability of free space. While you search boundaries and limits, Perhaps a transformation the ace. Big Bang, pure math, Great Pyramid at Giza, Beautiful counting function deeply connected to prime. Expanding dimensional analysis, imaginary, Distance, space, relation and time. I am pi.
