We chat Jovel Roystan, co-founder of the fashion and lifestyle website [the no names] to hear his views on fashion do’s and don’t’s and style inspiration. With big name brands still taking centre stage in the fashion world, it’s easy to lose sight of the urban, underground brands that can influence and inspire just as well as, and maybe even more so. In 2011 [the no names] website was founded by fashionisto Jovel Roystan and Kenneth Kyrell. Their aim was to take the lesser known brands and celebrate their individuality, as well as inspire their readers to live by [the no name] message to be themselves, and not be swayed by the power of trends.

WHAT 3 PROJECTS THAT YOU HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? Needless to say, my blog, [the no names], is my pride and joy. Together with my partner Kenneth, we built the entire platform from the ground up and still manage every aspect of it. It’s opened amazing doors and really helped solidify us as people worth checking out in the areas of men’s style and creative branding. Recently, my travel series has become a huge focus of mine and I’m excited about all I’ve gotten to see over the past two years. It’s becoming a much bigger part of my content, both on [tnn] and IG, and I can’t wait to get some more passport stamps this year.

theidleman.com

And coming down the pike, I’m in the beginning stages of putting together a collective of menswear and lifestyle influencers—one composed of the guys (and a few girls, too) that really inspire me. The idea is to bring everyone together to collaborate, expand our audiences and networks, and have way more bargaining power with the brands that catch our attention.

WHAT HAS BLOGGING TAUGHT YOU ABOUT FASHION – HOW HAS YOUR CAREER INFLUENCED YOUR STYLE? Well, for one, it’s definitely given me access to a lot of great clothing! But more importantly, I’ve learned that when you do something really well consistently, you can pave a respected path for yourself in this (and any) industry, even if you didn’t “start from the bottom” (i.e. went to school for it, had a string of internships that made you cry, and then finally “earned” the position of your dreams). The idea of bloggers has changed a lot over the past few years, and those who truly make it a profession are taken much more seriously—we kind of belong now, haha.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? The simplest answer: I don’t have one set style — point blank, period, no matter how much I try to lock one down. I’ve actually started calling myself a “style chameleon” as of the past few months. One day, I’m super minimal. The next, I’m in a grungy, downtown look. The day after that, I’m rocking a sporty chic “fashion boy” ensemble. I like to think that I have this weird superpower that allows me to pull them all off. And my audience has been super supportive, even with the more “out there” looks!

WHAT IS YOUR GO TO OUTFIT? My go-to would be a slouchy sweater or shirt with black skinny jeans and ankle boots (Chelseas, Jodhpurs, buckle boots, whatever). Throw on my moto with a layered hoodie and I’m in my zone.

WHERE DO YOU GET STYLE INSPIRATION FROM?

theidleman.com

My friends all have really awesome, but unique styles, and I’ll often take mental notes of cool statements I like from each of them and then play around with new things inspired by them day to day. And then there’s Instagram… I screen-shot something amazing from my timeline at least 20 times a day. Plus, living in NYC, you see things that catch your eye on the train, at the bodega, in SoHo, literally anywhere you go. It can be overwhelming in the best way.

Where’s your preferred place to chill and clear your head? AE: My oldest friend and I like to hang out in a restaurant called

D: Yeah they do some amazing goat cheese tempura, it’s so good.

In this My City we visit the historic city of Marseille with music duo Amine Edge & DANCE. Marseille is more than just a beautiful seaside city, and to find the beating heart of this historic area we need guides who know the place inside out. Amine Edge & DANCE are a music duo who gained fame with their unique and creative tracks and remixes, leading them to be top of the Beatport charts and on the playlists of some of the most influential DJs.

Best Sport Shoes For Men Whether you’re hitting the field, court or club, you’ve no doubt owned at least one pair of trainers in your life. So, to make sure you know exactly what ones are the most important, we’ve run down the four must-have sport shoes that are both practical and stylish.

theidleman.com

Runners Way back in the 1920s marathon runners were taking on the challenge wearing shoes that resembled more of a formal bit of footwear rather than an athlete’s trainer, with The Ritchings Company producing rubber soled shoes that weighed less than 10 ounces. Reebok were then the first company to develop running trainers in a more advanced way when they added running spikes to the bottom of their designs, as the biggest running competitions at the time were on track and cross country. Fast forward to the 1960s and you have what many credit as the first mass produced running trainer – the New Balance Trackster – with rippled grooves to prevent shin splints.

Tennis In style terms, they’re the perfect summer shoe for pairing with practically anything, from joggers to tailoring to denim. They’ve never actually faded out of style but we’re seeing a huge surge in popularity at the moment. One notable style is of course the Stan Smith, a commercial and stylish number that still remains one of the most popular designs around.

Skate If you’re after a more alternative or (dare we say it) indie finish, you’ve got to be looking towards skate styles. The first skate-specific shoe hit the market in 1965, being produced by the Randolph Company and was a canvas top number called the Randy 720°. Fast forward thirty years or so and the market was dominated by the likes of DC Shoes, Etnies and éS with chunky aesthetics, less desirable brands and a poor reputation. This combination of traits left skate shoes shunned by the style conscious. That was, until, the likes of Jordan, Nike and Vans entered the game.

Basketball Purpose-built basketball trainers go back to one iconic style we now all know and love – the Chuck Taylor by Converse. Dating back to 1917, the Chuck Taylor was developed by the man himself with Converse and was designed to give more support and grip on the court. It took another 55 years before Nike released their first basketball shoe, The Bruin, a drastically different design to their following styles.

Nigel Barker

theidleman.com

We chat to internationally renowned photographer and film director Nigel Barker. Well known for his appearance as photographer and judge on hit show America’s Next Top Model, Nigel Barker has gained world wide success not only from his skilled photography but also his charm, sophistication and charisma. He created his own TV show The Shot, which aired on VH1, and the radio show ‘The Gentleman’s Code’, and has built a reputation as a expert in the fashion and photography world

CAN YOU TELL US A LIT TLE BIT ABOU T WHAT YOU DO AND WHEN YOU GOT INTO IT? I’m not a fan of tooting my own horn but suffice to say I do a little bit of this and a little bit of that. I’m known as a fashion photographer and worked on television on America’s Next Top Model with Tyra Banks for a decade, and on The Face with Naomi Campbell for 2 years. I also enjoy making documentary films and have written a few books most recently a book called Models of Influence published by Harper Collins, which became a New York Times Best seller. I currently have a radio show on Radio Andy Channel 102 on SiriusXM called The Gentleman’s Code. Most importantly I am a husband and a father to two children Jack (10) and Jasmine (7).

CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT YOU DO AND WHEN YOU GOT INTO IT? Considering it’s only January, this year has started with a bang. I launched my Radio show The Gentleman’s Code on SiriusXM and had Kevin Jonas from the Jonas Brothers on as my first guest. We have gone on to have Tyson Beckford, the male super model, LtCol Wiley from the US Marines and Special Forces, Supermodel Coco Rocha, British Punk Rock Fashion Designer Keanan Duffty and Fitness trainers to the stars the DogPound. I have been busy working on a new Home furniture collection I am launching this summer in the US and am opening a gym in Tribeca in NYC in March called The DogPound with the afore mentioned trainers.

WHAT SONG HAVE YOU GOT ON REPEAT AT THE MOMENT? My son is learning to play the guitar and has got into Led Zeppelin so Stairway To Heaven is on repeat all over the house…

WHAT FASHION ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR A MAN? Whatever you wear, wear it with confidence, like you own it. There’s nothing worse than seeing a guy in a suit walking like a robot or a wearing the latest fad but awkwardly tweaking his belt to show more of his boxer shorts. If your trousers are falling down let them fall or for heaven’s sake put a belt on and keep them up. No matter what you think everyday, whatever you wear you make a fashion statement, but just because you are wearing a suit doesn’t mean you look like a success, that comes from the way you carry yourself.

IF YOU COULD GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF ONE PIECE OF ADVICE WHAT WOULD IT BE? To stop and smell the roses a little more, life doesn’t get better it gets different and you change a long with it. Enjoy the moment and remember to appreciate and soak in the here and now.

How to wear it

If you’re on the taller side of life (like myself) then you know only too well the struggles of finding clothes that will be long enough in the arms and in the legs. I know the demoralising feeling of finding the perfect jacket only to realise that the sleeves finish at your elbows. The difficulty with dressing when you’re quite tall is that you don’t want to look like you’re shorter, nor do you want to look even taller. So where does that leave you? Somewhere in the middle I’m afraid

Jackets When looking for jackets and blazers it’s important to buy them in a fitted shape. This may sound tricky, but it can be done. Take a suit blazer for instance, avoid buying a blazer that isn’t your size, I know that most of us can’t afford a well tailored suit, but that doesn’t stop you from getting measured properly in a shop. That way you know exactly what size you are when choosing a suit blazer.

Trousers

HOW TO WEAR IT

How men should dress for their body shape Dressing for you body shape doesn’t have to be a difficult task. With a few simple tips and tricks you can be dressing in clothes that flatter instead of falter in no time. We’ve all been there, worn something that clearly doesn’t fit or suit us and we’ve looked somewhat comical. Recalling on personal experience of trying to squeeze my rugby player sized calves into a pair of skinny jeans in a changing room with beads of sweat streaming down my face. Or, the time when I thought that one sized fitted all, how wrong I was. Now these were the days in my youth when I was experimenting with my style and I was on the heavier side of life. But knowing your body shape is key, this is when you can experiment with shape and colour to determine what suits you and what doesn’t. It sounds like a lot of leg work, but by following this simple guide on how men should dress for their body shape it’ll all make sense, trust me.

With being tall you’ll want to avoid extremely skinny shapes i.e. spray on skinny jeans as this elongates the leg and makes you appear taller. Opt instead for a pair of slim legged trousers or jeans, still giving you that slimmer shape whilst keeping your proportions all in order. Colour options are up to you as you can pretty much wear any shade of colour without it impacting on your proportions. Personally, I’d stick to the classics i.e. blue and black as you know where you stand with these.

Shopping

Tall

How to wear it

If you’re a naturally thin person you may find it difficult to find clothes that fit you in the waist and in the chest. Making yourself appear bulkier that you are can be quite difficult as it can be plainly obvious that you’re wearing more layers than humanly possibly. But, with the right tricks and tips you can make people think you’ve been hitting the gym more than you actually have.

Jackets Layering will also help you out a lot, no matter what the season is you can always have a layered look that will make you look bulkier. Try wearing a shirt with a thicker jumper over the top, giving you a smart look whilst creating the illusion of a bigger frame.

Trousers

Short Many among us aren’t vertically blessed, so you have to make yourself seem taller even if you aren’t. There are a few tricks of the trade to avoid looking even shorter and tricking people into thinking you’re six foot seven. I’ve known people to buy a pair of jeans in the shortest leg length for them to be far too long and then having to roll up the bottoms until they’re two inches thick. This is what we want to avoid, so, the first step is, again, to get measured. This is a massive indicator for yourself so you know what size you are, both for trousers and tops, so you aren’t wasting money on clothes that don’t fit.

Jackets When buying t-shirts and jackets you’ll want to avoid the long line trend as these pieces are designed to look oversized and longer in the body. These can make you look even shorter, and many of you don’t want that, so instead opt for a fitted t-shirt or jacket so that they finish just above your hips, making your torso in proportion to your legs.

theidleman.com

Trousers When buying trousers and jeans you’ll again want to avoid the super tight fits, these only look good on a small amount of people and trust me, Instead look for a pair that just skim your ankle, this gives the illusion that you’re taller than you are, and it makes for a nicer fit rather than baggier trousers. Try wearing a pair of cropped trousers or jeans, still giving you that taller illusion whilst keeping you bang on trend for this and every season. Darker shades also draw people’s eye away from your height rather than them focusing solely on you if you were in a brighter colour or pattern.

When buying trousers you must avoid the skinny fit at all cost, it will highlight your thinner frame and it can make you look even skinnier. You’ll want to instead opt for a slim leg fit or even, the bang on trend, wide legged fit, this gives you a little extra room creating the illusion of thicker legs. Again, go for a pair that finishes just at you ankle, even though you want to create the illusion of thicker legs you still want to look slim, and by having trousers that finish at your ankle you can still have a slim shape.

CHASE THE COMPASS How to work in the music industry

Idle Chat

CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT CHASE THE COMPASS? WHO’S BEHIND IT, HOW’D YOU START IT? Charlotte: I started CTC as a shop front for my writing just over two and a half years ago, Jamie came on board shortly afterwards and it just spiralled from there! We’re namely a music blog and an events company — but we also dabble in artist management, tour operating and lots more! Jamie: I jumped on board at CTC shortly after Charlotte kicked off with it as a music blog and we haven’t looked back since. I still have a full-time job working for The Daily Mirror so it is very much a juggling act, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. WHAT THREE PROJECTS THAT YOU HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

theidleman.com

C: The biggest project for me is seeing the blog grow into what it is today. We’ve interviewed some incredible artists — some of my personal heroes and mentors — and attracted a loyal cult of readers from around the world. It’s a really rewarding feeling, I’m so proud of what we’ve built. I’ve recently handed over the reigns to our new editor Declan McGlynn and he’s smashing it! J: We’ve been lucky enough to build strong relationships with other promoters — for example, our friends CUBED, who recently included CTC DJs on their stage at Bugged Out Weekender. We have also just had our first overseas event in Brooklyn, New York in December alongside our pals SUPPLY NY and featuring Jacques Renault and Walker & Royce. We have big plans for a Sydney event next month — watch this space! Lastly, our work with up-and-coming artists is key to what we do. We pride ourselves on providing a platform for these artists, we love supporting new talent. You can check out some of our featured artists on the CTC Supports section of the site.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK ON MUSIC/ JOURNALISM?

WHERE DO YOU GET STYLE INSPIRATION FROM?

C: I must have read every dance music history book ever written, I’m a nerd like that, but any budding dance music writer should have Simon Reynolds’ Energy Flash as their bible. You can also head to the Chase the Compass website for lots of great history pieces from people like Eddie Richards and Kevin McKay.

C: I realised a long time ago that dressing for your body type is the key to timeless style. I don’t really follow trends but I like things that are simple and I wear a lot of black. I really like reading fashion blogs — my favourite is The Blonde Salad, but I also love Rumi Neely from Fashion Toast and Jess from Tula Vintage.”

J: It has to be Electrochoc by Laurent Garnier. I cannot say enough good things about this book as it takes you on a journey of not only the legend Laurent Garnier’s life, but the electronic music industry as a whole. I had the pleasure of interviewing Laurent for The Mirror recently, which was amazing. He really is an inspiration and will be putting out unreleased parts of the interview on CTC real soon!

J: My main source of inspiration is on the streets and out and about at gigs. I don’t think many guys would admit this but I always appreciate what other guys are wearing and will have this in mind when changing up my wardrobe. I also keep tabs on brands from around the globe such as Zanerobe (Aus) and Farah to see what they are doing, as well as my monthly fix of Esquire each month!”

ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WANTING TO GET INTO MUSIC JOURNALISM AS A CAREER?

CHECK OUT CHASING T H E C O M P A S S AT ;

C: Be prepared to work (really) hard, be humble and always ask for feedback on every piece you write. Don’t be scared to introduce yourself to fellow journalists and editors. I know it can be scary but we’re all just shy music nerds at heart — trust me! Also, it sounds really simple, but read, read, read!

Whether you’re into raw and energetic Drum & Bass, party-vibing House or old school Hip-Hop, we’ve made sure we’ve included something for everyone.

Love Saves The Day made its debut in Bristol back in 2012 as a one-day event in Castle Park, organised by members of the team behind Glastonbury Dance Village’s Wow! Stage, the In:Motion series and GlobalGathering. However, it wouldn’t be unfair to say that our roots stretch back much further, through years spent organizing and attending festivals & club nights.
